Digital Storytelling As A Cultural-Historical Activity: Effects On Information Text Comprehension, Maryann E. Tatum
Digital Storytelling As A Cultural-Historical Activity: Effects On Information Text Comprehension, Maryann E. Tatum
Open Access Dissertations
New literacies in reading research demand for the study of comprehension skills using multiple modalities, through a more complex, multi-platform view of reading. Taking into account the robust roll of technology in our daily lives, research suggests that educators need activities to connect students' lack of reading skills with their growing multimodal literacy. During the post-reading phase of a directed reading activity (DRA), students were engaged in digital storytelling, where they created digital videos and slideshows based on information text read during DRA. Previous studies highlighting the use of digital storytelling have been limited to narrative formats and the influence …

Writer’S Workshop: Promoting Peer Relationships On Early Literacy, Jim Labrie
All Graduate Projects
Writer's Workshop and the influence of peer relationships and art on young children's literacy development were explored. There was found to be a direct correlation between children's art/drawings on their literacy development. Peer interactions during writing were also found to positively impact young writers. Peers and art do impact early literacy and have influences on Writer's Workshop and children's attitudes toward writing. Based on this research a handbook was developed to aid educators in planning a Writer's Workshop model, developing peer relationships during writing, and assessing student writing.

America Inc.: The Rise And Fall Of A Civil Democracy, Keith W. Edmonds
America Inc.: The Rise And Fall Of A Civil Democracy, Keith W. Edmonds
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The field of Curriculum Studies has thoroughly outlined the detrimental effects of corporate ideology on education in terms of curricular mandates, the corporatization of higher education, rampant privatization, and globalization. Educational mandates have created an atmosphere of control in which students are methodically deprived of exploration and creativity through strict adherence to a prescribed curriculum. This results in the de-skilling of teachers and the loss of Self as students are forced to memorize facts based on educational mandates, with teachers having to constantly redirect outlets for creativity in order to teach to the test. As a result of this study, …
To Read Or Not To Read: The Influence Of Literature On Behavior Management, Katherine E. Ray
To Read Or Not To Read: The Influence Of Literature On Behavior Management, Katherine E. Ray
Senior Honors Theses
Perhaps one of the most discussed issues in American education is that of classroom management. This is not simply an elementary-level problem either, as would be expected due to the younger student’s short attention spans, but an issue that affects the middle and high schools as well. More and more, behavioral issues are becoming a problem because they cause disruption in the classroom and restrict the students from reaching their full learning potential. But are these problems only due to the special needs of students, such as ADD or ADHD, or does the issue lie deeper? Perhaps reviewing the literature …

Interactive Software Incorporated Into Education To Improve Learning, Brittany S. Keller
Senior Seminars
Today, in a society that is growing more and more into technology, teachers find themselves faced with learning the new technology and incorporating it into their classroom environments. Teachers have moved to internet questions and smart boards in forms of teaching styles compared to the old days where most lectures were done on chalkboards, dry erase boards, or overheads. With the upcoming technology advances, studies find that children are enjoying video and computer games more and more because the graphics and designs are just getting better and better. Therefore, many companies and educational programs are bringin in interactive software to …

The Call To Critique ‘Common Sense’ Understandings About Boys And Masculinity(Ies), Leanne Dalley-Trim
The Call To Critique ‘Common Sense’ Understandings About Boys And Masculinity(Ies), Leanne Dalley-Trim
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This paper is founded upon the premise that ‘common sense’ understandings about boys persist within schools and, given this continuing circulation of such understandings, advocates the need to critique such conceptualising. It does so on the grounds that such understandings, and the essentialist discursive knowledges informing these, fail to take account of the complex and multifarious ways in which boys come to construct themselves as masculine subjects. In demonstrating the short-comings of such ‘common sense’ understandings, and indeed to need to call these into question, the paper examines the ways in which a group of boys took up positions of …

During the second half of the 20th century, there was an epic deterioration of the urban fabric of the typical American neighborhood. Starting with the fleeing of city dwellers into the outskirts of suburbia in the 1950s and the exodus of commercial institutions in the 1970s, neighborhood sprawl hit its stride with the elimination of the neighborhood school in the 1980s. With this community-defining component being replaced by giant, remote educational facilities, the American neighborhood was finally a shell of its former self. If the neighborhood represents the cell, then the home represents the nucleus. In 2003, 1.1 million children …

Embracing Diversities In Elementary Schools : Stepping Outside The Classroom, Tera Yoder
Embracing Diversities In Elementary Schools : Stepping Outside The Classroom, Tera Yoder
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Teachers are currently challenged on how to include all students in one common and safe learning environment. Students don't come in cookie cutter patterns, but vary between cultures, genders, classes, race and ability. While children don't learn the same; a positive, common environment and learning atmosphere can contribute to learning of all children. Research shows that children that have difficulty in a traditional classroom setting can feel more comfortable in a less intense environment, like that outdoors. Many students with linguistic or physical barriers learn better actively doing rather than lectures, which gives great opportunity for science experimentations. These factors …
Effective Inclusion Practices, M. Alyssa Barnes Ph.D.
Effective Inclusion Practices, M. Alyssa Barnes Ph.D.
Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education
This study examines effective instructional practices, which support the inclusion of students with special needs. Eight teacher and administrator participants completed interviews about their experiences working in a full-inclusion environment. In addition, the research includes narratives based on observations from the school. The findings summarize five practices essential in successful inclusive environments. These strategies include assessing the whole child, performance-based assessments, and use of visuals, specifically graphic organizers, and collaboration. Finally, the data demonstrate the idea that all of these practices benefit students with and without disabilities.
Language Module, April Dixon
Language Module, April Dixon
Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education
A study of children with learning disabilities and of children without provides a clear picture of the acquisition of language development of children. Language skills are generally typical of children at different age levels who do not have diagnosed learning disabilities. Language skills of the learning disabled are generally atypical due to constraints placed on the child during critical learning periods by the disability. Analyzation of the data in this study shows a correlation between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and language development in young children. Strategies can be implemented by classroom teachers to enhance the acquisition of language.

Curing Nature-Deficit Disorder: How Environmental Education Helps Kids Learn, Jamie Leigh Langley
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Walk into any public school and talk with the children about their experiences in nature and you will begin to see a pattern. Children have made few connections with the world around them. They do not spend much time outdoors and the time they do spend outdoors is not spent interacting directly with nature. Why does this matter? Look at these same kids and you will see another pattern emerging: Attention-Deficit Disorder, depression, obesity, emotional problems, etc. While not all of these problems are directly caused by a lack of interaction with the natural world, current research shows that there …

Teach The Children: Education And Knowledge In Recent Children's Fantasy, Elisabeth Rose Gruner
Teach The Children: Education And Knowledge In Recent Children's Fantasy, Elisabeth Rose Gruner
English Faculty Publications
This essay is an investigation into how learning is portrayed in children's books. It starts from two premises: first, that at least one origin of children's literature is in didacticism, and that learning and pedagogy continue to be important in much of the literature we provide for children today. Thus, for example, David Rudd claims that most histories of children's literature on "the tension between instruction and entertainment," and that the genre as we know it develops within, among other things, "an educational system promoting literacy" (29, 34). Seth Lerer's recent Children's Literature: A Reader's History similarly traces the origins …
