Foucault's "power-knowledge" is a controversial concept. Brought into English-speaking theoretical circles less than two decades ago, its meaning and range of applicability are still in dispute. While no one denies that some fields of social scientific knowledge (such as criminology) intersect institutionally with mechanisms of power, these intersections do not seem, to many, to constitute any essential relation of "mutual reinforcement" between knowledge and power. If, in rare cases, politics and scientific research are admitted to be mutually constitutive, the results of their mingling are typically dismissed as propaganda or pseudo-science. A few thinkers are willing to allow the entirety …
Play Fair With Punishment, Richard Dagger
Play Fair With Punishment, Richard Dagger
Political Science Faculty Publications
If we want to provide a justification for legal punishment, then, we must answer two distinct questions: (1) What justifies punishment as a social practice? and (2) What justifies punishing particular persons? The principle of fair play is an especially attractive theory of punishment, I shall agree, because it offers plausible and compelling answers to both these questions. I shall also suggest that there is a third question - How should we punish those who commit crimes? - that fair play cannot answer without help from other sources.
Criminology: A Reader's Guide, Bruce P. Archibald
Criminology: A Reader's Guide, Bruce P. Archibald
Dalhousie Law Journal
As a journeyman law teacher, sometime sociologist, enthusiastic law reformer, and an occasional dabbler in criminology and comparative law, this volume came to me like manna from heaven. It's an intelligent catalogue of almost all I ever wanted to know but most often never had time to read. Modestly called "a reader's guide", this book will serve a multitude of purposes for anyone with an interest in criminology. It is an excellent starting point for the student wishing to commence research on nearly any serious criminological topic. Criminal justice professionals who wish to step out of their narrow niche and …
Country Comfort: Vice And Corruption In Rural Settings, Gary W. Potter, Larry Gaines
Country Comfort: Vice And Corruption In Rural Settings, Gary W. Potter, Larry Gaines
Justice Studies Faculty and Staff Research
This article provides an in-depth examination of rural organized crime. Organized crime studies traditionally have focused on urban criminality; this study discusses its rural form. Types of participants, patterns of criminality, and relationships with political and law enforcement corruption are detailed. Although there are differences between urban and rural organized crime, it tends to exhibit some similarities regardless of setting.

Sanctions And Rewards In The Legal System: A Multidisciplinary Approach, A Wr Carrothers
Dalhousie Law Journal
This book consists of ten essays on the general theme of effective techniques for controlling and regulating social behaviour. The authors draw on the disciplines of management studies, history and criminology, public policy studies and economics, psychology, anthropology, law, sociology, and political science. They are, collectively, a modern manifestation of Roscoe Pound's concept of law in action as "social engineering".

Growing Old And Going Straight: Examining The Role Of Age In Criminal Career Termination, Annette I. Jolin
Growing Old And Going Straight: Examining The Role Of Age In Criminal Career Termination, Annette I. Jolin
Dissertations and Theses
This study was designed to investigate mid-life desistance from crime as a function of general mid-life change. Adult developmental theory postulates that major occupational or lifestyle changes occur during mid-life, more so than during other developmental periods in adulthood. Such changes are said to occur in conjunction with specific transitional processes experienced by the middle-aged male. The abandonment of a criminal career at mid-life is viewed as a significant occupational and lifestyle change. It is examined in relation to the postulated transitional processes affecting aspects of the life areas of work and social relationships, as well as health and psychological …
Directing The Development Of A University Centre Of Criminology, John Li. J. Edwards
Directing The Development Of A University Centre Of Criminology, John Li. J. Edwards
Dalhousie Law Journal
The original sod out of which the University of Toronto's Centre of Criminology grew was a proposal that I drew up while teaching a course in criminology as part of the LL.B. curriculum in the Faculty of Law at Dalhousie University in 1958-59.1 The proposal reviewed the extent of criminological teaching and research in Canada, and drew particular attention to the lack of implementation of the recommendations of the Fauteux Committee - a committee established in 1956 by the Canadian federal government to study the country's penal system and to make recommendations for change and improvement. 2 In its report, …

Book Review: Denial Of Justice: Criminal Process In The United States, Thomas G. Roth
Fordham Urban Law Journal
Thomas G. Roth reviews Denial of Justice: Criminal Process in the United States by Lloyd L. Weinreb. In his book, Lloyd L. Weinreb argues persuasively that American criminal process not only falls short of being the best there is, but it denies us a system which we can properly call "just." Weinreb's work is divided into two sections. The first part, which comprises the bulk of the book, explains how criminal process works and, more significantly, how it has failed to achieve effectively the goals for which it was developed. In the second part, he describes in general theory an …
The Halifax North End Project, Jim Ortego
The Halifax North End Project, Jim Ortego
Dalhousie Law Journal
Criminology is the unhappiest ship afloat in the sea of social science research. No one has been able to find the answer to the two simple questions that are a permanent plague: Why do people commit crime? How do you persuade them not to do it again? Each generation or so, any number of experts from diverse disciplines and political philosophies burst upon criminology with the answer to the crime problem. In the last fifty years they have taken the discipline, such as it is, through borstal training, open institutions, guided group interaction, open ended research designs and any number …
