The Social Construction Of The Sex Offender, Lisa L. Sample
The Social Construction Of The Sex Offender, Lisa L. Sample
Dissertations
Over the last two decades, Americans have come to perceive sex offending as a serious and widespread problem. As a response to the public's concern, new sex offender legislation has been enacted. This dissertation examines the contemporary sex offender problem and the legislative responses, within a social constructionist framework. I performed a content analysis of newspaper accounts, conducted interviews with public officials, and analyzed arrest data to determine the current definitions of sex offenders, the process by which those definitions found their way into law, and how they were applied to offenders.
I found that the media depict and policy …

Labeling Theory: The New Perspective, Doug Gay
Labeling Theory: The New Perspective, Doug Gay
The Corinthian
This report describes and examines the writings of criminologists from the labeling perspective and focuses on why and how some people come to be defined as deviant and what happens when they are so defined. This paper also addresses the development of labeling theory and the process an individual undergoes to become labeled as deviant. Also examined is the relationship of labeling theory to empirical testing, the value of the theory, and implications for further research.

This essay examines three questions, in each case using the colony and state of Maryland as a case study. First, why did some states adopt the penitentiary so much earlier than others? Pennsylvania opened one in 1790, but South Carolina waited until 1868 to do so. Given the variations in timing, did different states establish penitentiaries for different reasons? That seems to have been the case, as a comparison of Maryland's path to the penitentiary with that of other jurisdictions will demonstrate. Second, was the penitentiary truly revolutionary? Perhaps in some places, but not in Maryland. Third, did the diverse …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
With the dramatic advances in computer technology in recent decades, the increase of crimes committed using high technology has skyrocketed. Losses to corporations and governmental agencies have totalled millions if not billions of dollars per year. Victims are beginning to speak out and ask for help. Law enforcement agencies throughout the country are teaming together to create specialized crime units and task forces in an attempt to successfully combat computer related crimes. Nevada is one of the many states which is in the infancy stages of developing such a task force. The Sacramento Valley High Tech Crime Task Force has …

An Analysis Of Workplace Violence Incidents In Virginia Community Colleges And The Major Employers, Betsy E. Summerfield
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The media during the past ten years has given considerable attention to the workplace violence in factories, service organizations, and the public school systems throughout the United States. This study compared patterns of workplace violence in the 23 member institutions of the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) with the patterns of workplace violence in selected for-profit service and manufacturing employers in Virginia, to determine if workplace violence incidents occurring in the VCCS's member institutions reflect the workplace violence incidents experienced by business and industry within each member institution's service region. Chi-square analysis showed a significant difference in non-violent conflict training …
