Book Reviews, Richard C. Allen, Lawrence D. Gaughan
Vanderbilt Law Review
In this little book, Leon Radzinowicz, Wolfson Professor of Criminology and Director of the Institute of Criminology at the University of Cambridge, presents a brief survey of criminology in England, the United States, and eight countries of continental Europe. His perspective is historical as well as geographical: in discussing each nation, he begins with a sketch of the concepts and personalities that lent vitality to the development of its criminological teaching and research and concludes with an analysis of the contemporary scene, based on his own first-hand observations during a recent world tour "in search of criminology."With so vast a …

In Search Of Criminology. By Leon Radzinowicz, William B. Enright
San Diego Law Review
At the 1963 California State Bar Convention, Chief Justice Phil S. Gibson, in the course of an address to the profession, stated: "History will judge the quality of a civilization by the manner in which it enforces its criminal laws." This remark by the Chief Justice indicates the larger problem to which the author of the new book In Search of Criminology has addressed himself.

Institutional And Post-Institutional Treatment Of The Sex Offender, Thomas P. Wall Jr., Chalmers P. Wylie
Institutional And Post-Institutional Treatment Of The Sex Offender, Thomas P. Wall Jr., Chalmers P. Wylie
Vanderbilt Law Review
The problem of the sex offender is as old as society itself. Today, as in the distant past, man is more concerned, in the first instance, with protecting himself and his loved ones from the corrupting touch of the so-called "sex- fiend" than he is with the punishment; treatment or cure of such persons. This phenomenon of social psychology still prevails in spite of the growing preachments of the doctor, psychologist, criminologist and more recently, of the lawyer prosecutor, the lawyer law-maker and the lawyer practitioner,' to the effect that the primarily desirable end of protecting society can best be …

Irresistible Impulse And Criminal Liability, John Barker Waite
Irresistible Impulse And Criminal Liability, John Barker Waite
Michigan Law Review
Do you believe in free-will, or mechanistic determinism, or fore-ordination, or fatalism? What do you mean by 'irresistible impulse'? What is the purpose of this prosecution against which you advocate, or deny, irresistible impulse as a defense; and just what do you mean by 'defense'? If, instead of one question, "is irresistible impulse a defense", we should ask these other questions of counsel, judge and medical expert, how often would their answers be in accord? Yet the one question can never be intelligently discussed in the absence of certainty and agreement as to the other premises. There are certain combinations …
