Communication And Socialization Skills At Ages 2 And 3 In "Late-Talking" Young Children, Rhea Paul, Shawn S. Looney, Pamela S. Dahm Aug 1991

Communication And Socialization Skills At Ages 2 And 3 In "Late-Talking" Young Children, Rhea Paul, Shawn S. Looney, Pamela S. Dahm

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

Twenty-one apparently normal children between 18 and 34 months of age with slow expressive language acquisition were compared to a group of normally speaking children matched for age, SES, and sex ratio, on the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales (Sparrow, Balla, & Cicchetti, 1984). The late talkers (LTs) scored significantly lower not only in expressive communication, but also in receptive communication and socialization. A follow-up study of the same subjects, seen at age 3, showed nearly half the 3-year-olds with a history of LT remained delayed in expressive communication and socialization, while one third remained behind in receptive language. The data …

A Bormannean Content Analysis Of World-Herald Articles In The Case Of The Franklin Credit Union., Susan Lee Galberaith Aug 1991

A Bormannean Content Analysis Of World-Herald Articles In The Case Of The Franklin Credit Union., Susan Lee Galberaith

Student Work

This study combines Ernest Bormann's fantasy theme analysis with content analysis to create a new methodology. The newly created methodology uses a data set to create a highly detailed story from which the portrayal of fantasy themes and their evolution into rhetorical visions can be analyzed. This study used this methodology to depict the fantasy themes setting, persona, and plot line created by World Herald newspaper coverage about the Franklin Credit Union between the years of 1969 and 1990. Recorded themes were then analyzed to determine the extent of their evolution into rhetorical vision. Results of this study support a …

Privileged Communication Extended To The Corporate Ombudsman-Employee Relationship Via Federal Rule Of Evidence 501, Kevin L. Wibbenmeyer Jul 1991

Privileged Communication Extended To The Corporate Ombudsman-Employee Relationship Via Federal Rule Of Evidence 501, Kevin L. Wibbenmeyer

Journal of Dispute Resolution

While there is no universally accepted definition of a corporate ombudsman, many companies view a corporate ombudsman as a neutral manager within a corporation, who may provide informal assistance to both managers and employees in resolving work-related concerns and whose office is located outside of the management structure.2 Serious interest in utilizing a corporate ombudsman did not take a firm hold in the corporate arena until the 1900's.3 Reasons for increased interest in the corporate ombudsman include: an increasingly welleducated employee pool, changing laws and statutes, and stresses associated with huge increases in government contracting.4 Kientzy v. McDonnell Douglas Corp. …

Communicating With Graphic User Interfaces: A Comparison Of Menu Selection And Menu Bypass Techniques, Monty Lee Hammontree Jul 1991

Communicating With Graphic User Interfaces: A Comparison Of Menu Selection And Menu Bypass Techniques, Monty Lee Hammontree

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The present study was conducted in two phases to determine design tradeoffs relating to command bar menu and bypass code-based techniques for interacting with computers. Forty eight subjects participated. In the first phase of the experiment, mouse-, chorded key-, and function key-based menu selection techniques were compared. It was found that menus were accessed much faster with spatially mapped function keys as compared to chorded key sequences or mouse inputs, and that relative to mouse inputs compatible letter keys lead to faster command selection times. Further, the function key-based technique yielded the fastest combined access and selection times, the fastest …

Cross Cultural Understanding Through Language, Shaun Bradley Roundy Jun 1991

Cross Cultural Understanding Through Language, Shaun Bradley Roundy

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Much has been done to discover the place that language holds in the development of our communication and thought patterns. The methods through which members of various societies learn different attitudes and how their respective languages reflect and reinforce such patterns have also been studied in some depth with a number of world cultures. The interpersonal barriers and misunderstandings brought about by the dissimilarities between unconscious but powerful forces that culture has upon our thinking are understandably difficult to discern and thereby surmount. In this paper, I will demonstrate how the chances of achieving this aim may be enhanced through …

Empathy, Holonomic Brain Processes And Patanjali's Sutras: A Study Of Western And Eastern Models Of Perception As They Relate To Empathic Communication, Dana Ralston Mccullough May 1991

Empathy, Holonomic Brain Processes And Patanjali's Sutras: A Study Of Western And Eastern Models Of Perception As They Relate To Empathic Communication, Dana Ralston Mccullough

Dissertations and Theses

Communication scholars, psychologists, teachers and social scientists recognize the importance of empathy to effective communication; however, its essential nature remains a mystery. The nonverbal and subjective aspects of empathic perception make it difficult to study with traditional Western scientific tools. Existing studies of empathic process concentrate primarily on the early or the latter stages. The central steps are seldom addressed. A method is needed for following empathic perception to its core processes and exploring the principles that govern its nature. Systems science offers a viable alternative method of studying empathy through analysis of models, emphasizing principles of interaction and process.

Artistic Expression And The First Amendment., Karen Ann Weber Apr 1991

Artistic Expression And The First Amendment., Karen Ann Weber

Student Work

Freedom of expression is a fundamental concern for all artists who seek to create and exhibit their works. Throughout history, the church, government, other institutions, and those with personal power over artists, have attempted to suppress artistic expression. In many instances of censorship, the works in question did not conform to perceived standards of taste and decency. In other cases, art was suppressed or destroyed in an effort to squelch political criticism. The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees freedom of expression to all Americans. However, the right to artistic freedom is not absolute. The U.S. Supreme Court has …

Family Strengths Among Black Families In Alaska: A Case Study, Washington W. Brown Jr. Feb 1991

Family Strengths Among Black Families In Alaska: A Case Study, Washington W. Brown Jr.

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The idea of a strong family is a very subjective concept. A strength, according to one set of criteria, could easily be interpreted as a weakness according to another set of criteria--and vice-versa. Most scholars of the family would agree that a strong bond of affection between family members is usually an asset. But if this affection is manifested in extremely dependent and stifling relationships among family members, such a bond would generally be characterized as a "pathological" liability.

The family has traditionally provided the foundation for society, and, though in contemporary America some of its functions have been absorbed …
