A Communication Audit Of The Catholic Diocese Of Wheeling-Charleston, Larry W. Dorsch Jan 1992

A Communication Audit Of The Catholic Diocese Of Wheeling-Charleston, Larry W. Dorsch

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Communicating the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the principal existential task of the Church. "Communicating" and "the Gospel" both are terms loaded with philosophical underpinnings and practical implications that constantly challenge the church to examine its established patterns of ministry and behavior, as well as its priorities and budgets.

The strides in communication practice and technology of the twentieth century have shaken the church's modus operandi in ways that are unparalleled in the previous nineteen centuries of Christian faith. While to be sure the invention of the printing press in the fifteenth century sparked major shifts and realignments in the …

Software Issues And Performance Of A Parallel Model For Stock Option Pricing, Kim Mills, Gang Cheng, Michael Vinson, Sanjay Ranka Jan 1992

Software Issues And Performance Of A Parallel Model For Stock Option Pricing, Kim Mills, Gang Cheng, Michael Vinson, Sanjay Ranka

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

The finance industry is beginning to adopt parallel computing for numerical computation, and will soon be in a position to use parallel supercomputers. This paper examines software issues and performance of a stock option pricing model running on the Connection Machine-2 and DECmpp-12000. Pricing models incorporating stochastic volatility with American call (early exercise) are computationally intensive and require substantial communication. Three parallel versions of a stock option pricing model were developed which varied in data distribution, load balancing, and communication. The performance of this set of increasingly refined models ranged over no improvement, 10 times, and 100 times faster than …

Treating Communication Apprehension In The Basic Public Speaking Course: A National Survey And Recommendations, Thomas Eugene Robinson Jan 1992

Treating Communication Apprehension In The Basic Public Speaking Course: A National Survey And Recommendations, Thomas Eugene Robinson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Communication apprehension (CA) or stage fright can result in shaking hands, a quivering voice, nausea, in addition to causing permanent emotional and social damage. Most students enrolled in the basic public speaking course suffer at some level with communication apprehension. With what is at stake in terms of success and failure, there needs to be some treatment for CA in these basic public speaking courses. A number of institutions have created special courses to treat apprehensive students, while others leave the treatment up to the individual instructors. These instructors must then decide, from the resources available, what treatment techniques best …

G92-1065 How Is Your Family's Well-Being?, Herbert G. Lingren Jan 1992

G92-1065 How Is Your Family's Well-Being?, Herbert G. Lingren

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Whether or not the family is a healthy, cohesive, and nourishing unit depends on the individual family members and the ways in which they contribute to it.

Being in good health has become a growing concern throughout our society. Great emphasis is placed on nutrition and exercise to keep our bodies slim, trim, and healthy. Unfortunately, somewhere between the sit-ups and the natural foods, we've forgotten that our family's "well-being" may also need a "checkup" and a "workout."

It takes much more than exercise and a balanced diet to keep a family "fit." Whether or not the family is a …

The Progression Of Photographic Image Manipulation In Communication: An Argument Against The "Revolution" Of Technological Change, Cynthia Lynn Wood Jan 1992

The Progression Of Photographic Image Manipulation In Communication: An Argument Against The "Revolution" Of Technological Change, Cynthia Lynn Wood

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The technology of photographic image manipulation has evolved faster than our ability to consider its implications. This thesis looks at the recent evolution of image manipulation, which some regard as a "revolution." The various stages of technological progression are examined using examples according to Brian Winston's model of technological change. These stages include: scientific competence, ideation, prototypes, supervening necessity, invention, the 'law' of the suppression of radical potential, and technological performance. A review of literature on the topic of photography in communication is included as well as an examination of the early photographers who used image manipulation in their work. …

Deep-Seated Culture: Understanding Sitting, Karen T. Keifer-Boyd

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Similar to the way that our culture influences how we interpret the world, the way that we sit in a chair and the type of chair that we are in positions what we see and how we are seen. Environmental cues communicate information through which we establish context and define a situation (Rapoport, 1982, p. 56). In this paper I examined the ways in which chairs (defined as that which is underneath us when "sitting") and sitting (defined as the infinite ways that we sustain our bodies in a bent position ranging from squatting, kneeling, reclining, or the lotus position) …

"Nobody Said Anything" Issues Of Communication In The Short Stories Of Raymond Carver, Darren Bosch Jan 1992

"Nobody Said Anything" Issues Of Communication In The Short Stories Of Raymond Carver, Darren Bosch

Honors Papers

In this paper I plan to divide my consideration of the different levels of communication in Carver's work into several categories, realizing that these categories overlap and are in no way mutually exclusive. First, I will consider Carver's characters, what might be called communication within the story, or communication as theme. Second, I will specifically look at the narrator, who is both character (and therefore a part of the issues of communication within the story) and communication link between the text and the reader. Finally I will address how narrative point of view and other aspects of Carver's style, such …

A Training Program Designed To Enhance Supervision Of Child And Youth Care Workers In Multicultural Settings, Lesley Du Toit

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The majority of child care practitioners promoted to supervisory positions did not have the essential skill and knowledge to ensure effective supervision. Alternatively, supervisory positions were given to practitioners from a related profession, such as social work. In this instance, supervisors had difficulty in recognizing the importance of supervision, and in knowing how to approach supervision of child and youth care workers.

The author designed and implemented a 10 week training programme for child and youth care supervisors. A total of 11 supervisors participated in a three-phase training program which included individual consultations and b training workshops. The workshops focused …

Sticks And Stones Can Break My Name: Nondefamatory Negligent Injury To Reputation, Katharine B. Silbaugh

Faculty Scholarship

If a reputation is injured, does it matter whether defamation is the cause? Injury to reputation differs from other items of damage a plaintiff enumerates. Tradition links it to particular tortious conduct-defamation-on the part of a defendant. This Comment examines ordinary negligent conduct as an alternative ground for recovery for injury to reputation.
