Nurse-To-Nurse Change-Of-Shift Handoff Communication: The Experience Among Senior Nursing Students In A Hospital Setting—A Transcendental Phenomenological Study, Karen Bryson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of senior nursing students with nurse-to-nurse change-of-shift handoff communication during their clinical practicum at a major healthcare system in the United States. The guiding research question was: What are the lived experiences of senior nursing students when communicating shift-to-shift handoff reports to incoming nurses during senior clinical practicum in an acute care hospital setting? Bandura's social cognitive theory and Kolb's experiential learning theory are the two theories that support the conceptual framework of this study. Ten nursing students were purposefully recruited from local two-year and four-year nursing …
Agency Cost And Smart City Initiatives In Virginia: A Case Study, Jordan M. Peters
Agency Cost And Smart City Initiatives In Virginia: A Case Study, Jordan M. Peters
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this case study will be to solve the problem of agency costs in three of Virginia’s largest Smart Cities and to formulate a solution for public administrators to implement during smart city development. This case study contributes to existing public administration knowledge by expanding upon post-progressive public administration theory by acknowledging the preferences of public administrators and the role those preferences play in the adoption of SCI priorities. While scholarly literature increasingly insists that the preferences of citizens drive SCI, this clashes with the post-progressive public administration theory proposed by Miller (1994) which acknowledges the influence of …
Feeling At Home In The Basic Communication Course: A Qualitative Case Study Of Faculty And Student Perceptions Of A Connected Classroom Climate At One Midwestern University, Cynthia Grobmeier
Basic Communication Course Annual
The concept of a connected classroom climate considers that peer-to-peer interaction, not just instructor-student interaction, contributes to a sense of community in the classroom that can impact student outcomes. This qualitative case study considers both student and instructor perceptions of what contributes to that sense of connection in the classroom at a mid-size, four-year, Hispanic-serving university. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews and member checks with students and instructors who engaged in the first-year basic communication course during the Spring 2022 semester. Four themes emerged in this study: a) the communication classroom is uniquely positioned to create a sense of …
Talking About Dying: Enhancing Comfort With End-Of-Life Conversations With Patients And Families, Mary Ann Villano, Denise Mcnulty
Talking About Dying: Enhancing Comfort With End-Of-Life Conversations With Patients And Families, Mary Ann Villano, Denise Mcnulty
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
End-of-life discussions can be difficult for patients, their families, and clinical nurses. Yet, studies have shown that early end-of-life discussions increase patient/family acceptance of the illness as terminal, promote satisfaction and involvement with end-of-life care, and have the potential to reduce emergency department visits, hospital admissions, and length of stay. This pre-/post- evidence-based practice implementation aimed to improve clinical nurses' confidence in initiating and participating in end-of-life discussions with patients and families. A pre-survey created by the author and subject-matter experts was distributed via an electronic survey to nurses on an acute care, oncology unit before attending a 2-hour continuing …

It Just Means More: The Cultural Bond Between The South And Sec Football, Ryan Stinson
Senior Theses
With the success of programs like Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech in the early 1900s, college football quickly became means of establishing Southern superiority over the northern U.S. Their success continued into the 20th and 21st centuries with the creation and rise of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). During and prior to the existence of the SEC, rivalries, traditions, and pageantry developed and thrived in communities across the southeast. These aspects created a unique environment that drew in fans of college football across the region. This resulted in a unique bond between fan, university, team, and community that has thrived within all …
