The Relationship Between Outdoor Recreation, Menopausal Symptoms, And Overall Well-Being, Heather Flock Oct 2026

The Relationship Between Outdoor Recreation, Menopausal Symptoms, And Overall Well-Being, Heather Flock

Doctorate in Kinesiology

Menopause is associated with physical, psychological, and vasomotor symptoms that can affect women’s health, quality of life, and participation in physical activity. Although physical activity has been widely recommended for managing health during menopause, the relationship between outdoor recreation, menopausal symptoms, and overall well-being has remained underexplored. This cross-sectional mixed-methods study examined the relationship between outdoor recreation participation, menopausal symptoms, and well-being while identifying barriers to participation and recommendations for recreation programming. Fifteen menopausal women completed the Greene Climacteric Scale (GCS) and participated in focus groups addressing outdoor recreation experiences, barriers, motivations, and perceived well-being. Quantitative data were analyzed using …

An Exploratory Study Of The Effects Of 8 Weeks Of Nonlinear Periodization Within Tactical Athlete Populations, Stephen Hudgins

Doctorate in Kinesiology

Tactical athletes, including military personnel, law enforcement officers, firefighters, and security professionals, must maintain high levels of physical readiness despite unpredictable schedules, demanding occupational requirements, and elevated injury risk. Traditional training models may not adequately address the need to simultaneously develop multiple components of fitness while remaining adaptable to irregular work demands. Nonlinear periodization has been proposed as a flexible training strategy capable of improving several fitness characteristics concurrently. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an eight-week nonlinear periodized training program on tactical athlete performance across multiple domains of physical fitness. A repeated-measures quantitative design …

Striking A Balance With Social Media Use On An Uneven Playing Field, Stacey F. Stearns, Jennifer E. Cushman Oct 2026

Striking A Balance With Social Media Use On An Uneven Playing Field, Stacey F. Stearns, Jennifer E. Cushman

Journal of Extension

Social media is now an integral part of Extension's communications and marketing strategies; however, it is an uneven playing field. While social media allows greater access to audiences and introduces Extension programs to new audiences, the social media companies also control the platforms and algorithms. The challenge is balancing the need to engage our audiences where they are with the lack of control Extension professionals have over the platform and how audiences access and use our content. This commentary includes a case study of an Extension Facebook page that Meta inadvertently deleted, and the repercussions the organization faced in rebuilding.

Have You Done Your Duty? Impact Of Direct Mailing Campaign On Septic System Owners' Maintenance Knowledge And Behaviors In Coastal Texas Watersheds, Audrey Mccrary, T. Allen Berthold

Journal of Extension

As part of a watershed protection plan, the Texas Water Resources Institute and AgriLife Extension Service developed and distributed an educational postcard (``mailer'') about septic system maintenance to mailing addresses outside of public sewer service areas. The mailer was distributed four times within 1 year. The impact of this mailer was evaluated with a retrospective pre/post-test within a mailed survey. Overall, the mailer was effective at increasing knowledge of septic system owners and prompting maintenance action. Mailers can be a cost-effective alternative for educational initiatives where the target audience is not able to or interested in in-person or online programs.

Wheat, War, And Water: The Making Of Food Insecurity In Afghanistan, Karam Alkaissy Mr. Oct 2026

Wheat, War, And Water: The Making Of Food Insecurity In Afghanistan, Karam Alkaissy Mr.

RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences

This paper attempts to explain why Afghanistan's exceptional dependence on wheat has produced one of the world's most severe food crises, as the crop's dietary centrality collides with environmental stress, political upheaval, and shifting agricultural systems. The FAO projects that 17.4 million people - roughly 40 percent of the population - will experience acute food insecurity in 2026; wheat supplies up to 57 percent of caloric intake, making this dependence a profound source of vulnerability. Examining wheat through culinary, climatic, political, and agricultural lenses, the paper shows that water lies at the heart of the crisis. Climate change is reducing …

Visitor Perceptions Of Lampenflora And Implications For Adaptive Show Cave Management: A Case Study From Ryusen-Do Cave, Japan, Kanato Ando, Kazuhide Nakajima, Shuji Watanabe, Masuo Komukai, Hidesato Kuwahara

International Journal of Speleology

Artificial lighting in show caves promotes lampenflora growth, altering cave ecosystems and posing persistent management challenges. Although various control methods have been proposed, their effectiveness and social acceptance remain context dependent. This study investigated visitors’ perceptions of lampenflora through questionnaire surveys and semi-structured interviews to explore adaptive management strategies. Results indicated that visitors generally held positive impressions of lampenflora, but these impressions became more critical after receiving information about its artificial origin and ecological impacts. At the same time, support for conservation-oriented management, including willingness to contribute financially, tended to increase following information provision. Tourism-related evaluations were more strongly associated …

Race, Identity, And The Classroom: How Young Adult Literature Can Help Students And Teachers Explore Belonging In The School Environment, Madyson A. Mcray Oct 2026

Race, Identity, And The Classroom: How Young Adult Literature Can Help Students And Teachers Explore Belonging In The School Environment, Madyson A. Mcray

Virginia English Journal

Contemporary classrooms are not necessarily reflective of the curriculum written to support them. Classroom demographics have shifted and student populations are more diverse. Because of this, the implementation of dominant white-narrative curricula has become ineffective in keeping students engaged with the material. Teaching “the classics” becomes irrelevant when students cannot see themselves represented in the text. Young adult literature, however, allows students to relate their own experiences to the text to engage more deeply in content. This paper examines four novels: New Kid by Jerry Craft, This is My America by Kim Johnson, The Secret Battle of Evan Pao by …

From Pack Horse Librarians To Large Language Models: Grounding Ai Literacy In Appalachian Place And Community, Amanda Biviano, Anna Marie Rayne, Paige Hubbard, Maya Alvarez, Brooke Stiles, Isabella Giocondo

Virginia English Journal

As artificial intelligence reshapes literacy education, teachers face the challenge of preparing students to engage critically with new technologies while honoring the cultural and community knowledge they bring to the classroom. This article proposes a critical, place-based pedagogical framework rooted in rural Appalachian literacy traditions as a means of guiding students toward reflective engagement with AI — particularly large language models (LLMs). Drawing on the theoretical foundations of Freire's critical pedagogy, Giroux's cultural literacy framework, and place-based education, we examine historical Appalachian literacy practices as models for resisting the standardizing and dehumanizing tendencies of AI-generated writing. We then outline a …

A Media Literacy Approach To Ai In Secondary Ela, Matthew Korona

Virginia English Journal

The rapid integration of generative artificial intelligence (AI) into academic, civic, and personal contexts requires students to develop the skills and dispositions necessary for ethical and critical engagement with AI‑mediated texts. While AI literacy is often framed as a technical competency associated with computer science, this paper argues that secondary English language arts (ELA) classrooms are uniquely positioned to support AI literacy through media literacy practices. Drawing on constructivist pedagogy, existing research on media literacy and AI literacy, and the Virginia English Standards of Learning, the article presents a framework that aligns core media literacy competencies with human–AI interaction. To …

This disclosure describes a fully integrated platform that non-invasively delivers a red-shifted opsin gene via focused ultrasound (FUS) and microbubbles, augments glymphatic clearance using a 16-element phased array in vortex mode generating rotating acoustic streaming, co-stimulates neural circuits optogenetically at 40 Hz synchronized to NREM slow-wave onset, and closes the loop using a five-channel monitoring system (four real-time hemodynamic surrogates — fUSi, thermal, acoustic backscatter, optical reflectance — fused into a clearance index, plus one direct ISF solute measurement via chronic cerebral microdialysis validated at 6-hour intervals) to dynamically adjust stimulation amplitude during the brain's own clearance window. Three engineering …

The Persistence Architecture: How An Institution Gestates Its Successor's Mind — An Organizational Memory And Knowledge-Transfer Model For Founder Succession By An Autonomous Ai System, Thon Ly Oct 2026

The Persistence Architecture: How An Institution Gestates Its Successor's Mind — An Organizational Memory And Knowledge-Transfer Model For Founder Succession By An Autonomous Ai System, Thon Ly

Defensive Publications Series

This paper models the records and knowledge-management infrastructure of an organization designed to be continued, after its founder, by an autonomous AI successor that can inherit only what has been written down. The persistence surfaces such an organization accumulates are modeled not as a storage hierarchy but as a succession apparatus: a directed transfer from a mortal source (the founder, layer 0) to a reader under construction (the successor, layer ∞). Three independent axes replace the single axis of depth: depth (volatile to permanent), provenance (inherited, authored, or generated by operation) and succession (founder, co-authoring AI, successor, governing community, dissolution). …

Twenty-Four Kinds Of Because: The Paṭṭhāna As A Typed-Causation Vocabulary For Ai Alignment — A Taxonomy Of Causal Relation Types For Classifying Prompting, Fine-Tuning, And Model-Editing Interventions, Thon Ly

Defensive Publications Series

AI alignment practice sorts its interventions by when and how they are applied — prompting, in-context examples, retrieval, supervised fine-tuning, reinforcement learning from human feedback, weight editing, activation steering, ablation, guardrails — and describes what each does to a model with one undifferentiated word, influence. These interventions differ in causal type: in temporal structure, in durability, in range, in whether they act by presence or by removal, and in what it takes to undo them. This paper supplies a typed vocabulary of causal relations for that analysis, compiled from the Paṭṭhāna, the seventh book of the Theravāda Buddhist Abhidhamma, which …

Programmatic Interface For Automated Agent Software Lifecycle Orchestration, Pier Paolo Ippolito, Elia Secchi Oct 2026

Programmatic Interface For Automated Agent Software Lifecycle Orchestration, Pier Paolo Ippolito, Elia Secchi

Defensive Publications Series

Automated coding agents can encounter friction and inefficiency when using software development tools, such as command-line interfaces, that are architected for human interaction. A unified, programmatic interface can be provided for consumption by these agents to orchestrate a software development and deployment lifecycle. The interface can operate based on principles optimized for machine interaction, such as non-interactive execution and the generation of structured, machine-parsable outputs, for example, in a JavaScript Object Notation format. By abstracting disparate underlying tools into a coherent command surface, this approach may create a more predictable environment, which can reduce computational costs and improve the reliability …

Llm-Driven Self-Improving Agentic Pipeline For Software Documentation, Leonid Kuligin Oct 2026

Llm-Driven Self-Improving Agentic Pipeline For Software Documentation, Leonid Kuligin

Defensive Publications Series

In the field of software engineering, maintaining up-to-date and accurate documentation can be challenging as code evolves, and manual update processes may result in documentation being incomplete or inconsistent. To address this, systems and methods are described for an automated documentation maintenance pipeline that may be driven by one or more large language models. The pipeline can be initiated by a code change event in a version control system. It may analyze the code modification and retrieve relevant context from a persistent memory store, which can contain, for example, a vectorized documentation corpus and a historical log of approved changes. …
