A Comparison Of Cooperative Learning And Collaboration In High School Geometry Classes Including Geometry In Construction, Shelley Gates
Dissertations
Currently offered at over 450 high schools in the United States, Geometry in Construction is an interdisciplinary course that provides students with the opportunity to learn Geometry content through the process of constructing a single-family home. Highly functioning cooperative groups are a critical element of the Geometry in Construction program. Cooperative learning is an effective instructional strategy that increases student achievement (Slavin, 2011) and also provides opportunities for students to develop collaboration and teamwork skills. Collaboration and teamwork are critical 21st century skills that are highly valued by employers and therefore worthy of consideration as foundational skills to be taught …

Publications and Research
Building effective communication and interdepartmental partnerships are essential components of strengthening services, policies, and procedures to meet the individual information needs of students, faculty, and the college community. Despite major advancements in library services for users with disabilities, there are ongoing challenges, which need to be addressed. It is essential to develop inclusion and accessibility frameworks that serve mutual departmental interests to share and document lessons learned along the way.
This article explores the evolving shared leadership between an Architecture Librarian/Liaison to the AccessAbility Center; and the Director of Student Disability Services at the City College of New York to …
Veteran Administration Disease Model To An Interdisciplinary Healthcare Model, Bertha J. Harris
Veteran Administration Disease Model To An Interdisciplinary Healthcare Model, Bertha J. Harris
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is a growing need for healthcare teams within the Veterans Administration (VA) healthcare system to effectively collaborate and communicate to improve patient outcomes. The need to improve patient care in the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) has been well established. The scholarly literature does not provide evidence whether using the primary care PACT model on communication and teamwork by an interdisciplinary medical team ameliorates these communication breakdowns. Bronstein's design for interdisciplinary collaboration provided the overarching framework for this study. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate the use of the PACT model on communication and teamwork …

Cross-Community Collaboration Among Knowledge Building Communities, Guangji Yuan
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Cross-community collaboration which expands community members’ interaction to a larger social scale plays a crucial role in increasing information exchange and extending inquiry learning. This dissertation uses a design-based research approach which aims at testing a multi-level emergence design in multiple learning communities. This design serves the urgent need to enable students’ idea sharing and build-on with members from other communities who have similar interests for mutual learning and collective knowledge advances.
Collaboration And Research Practice In Intelligence, Minna Räsänen
Collaboration And Research Practice In Intelligence, Minna Räsänen
Secrecy and Society
Close, intensive research collaboration between universities, companies, and the public sector can open up new and different opportunities for qualitative research, and provide analytic and empirical insights that otherwise might be difficult to obtain. The aim of this paper is to explore collaboration as a means of doing research with the intelligence community. Experiences from a research project concerning dilemmas the practitioners face in their organization within the Swedish Armed Forces, serve as a starting point for this reflective discussion. It is argued here that collaboration is suitable when change is required. The mutual learning between the actors feeds into …

Service Designers, Unite! Identifying Shared Concerns Among Multidisciplinary Perspectives On Service Design, Maíra Prestes Joly, Jorge Teixeira, Lia Patrício, Daniela Sangiorgi
ServDes Conference Series
Service Design is a multidisciplinary approach that asks for further research to be better integrated. This article contributes to bridging this gap by identifying shared concerns among multidisciplinary perspectives on Service Design. A qualitative study involving six focus groups was conducted on international Service Design research centers. Results show the service system concept as an abstraction that supports integrating multidisciplinary perspectives and their contributions to Service Design, by identifying shared concerns across different levels: (a) at an individual-actor level, the shared concern of an actor-centered approach; (b) at an organizational service delivery system level, the shared focus on processes and …
Designing Tangible Tools To Support Collaboration In The Co-Design Of Healthcare Services, Karianne Rygh
Designing Tangible Tools To Support Collaboration In The Co-Design Of Healthcare Services, Karianne Rygh
ServDes Conference Series
As the challenges facing the Norwegian healthcare system are growing in scale and complexity, cross-disciplinary collaboration is needed between public and private sectors to rethink how we design services for care. Service design has emerged as a fruitful area of design practice and research that can support cross-disciplinary collaboration. It may do so by providing effective co-design communication tools that bridge the evidence-based culture of the medical world with working cultures, perspectives and languages of other fields. Despite the documented use of such tools, few examples in the literature describe the actual design process of developing three-dimensional communication tools and …

Teacher Perspectives Of Their Experiences In A Professional Learning Community And How These Experiences Contribute To A Collaborative School Culture, Kimberly Janette Kelley
Teacher Perspectives Of Their Experiences In A Professional Learning Community And How These Experiences Contribute To A Collaborative School Culture, Kimberly Janette Kelley
Education Dissertations and Projects
Fullan (1998) stated, “Student achievement increases substantially in schools with collaborative work cultures that foster a professional learning community among teachers and others” (p. 8). Vandevoort, Amrein-Beardsley, and Berliner (2004) also found that the quality of the teacher in the classroom is the single most important factor in determining how well a child learns. The purpose of this study was to determine practices and experiences within a Professional Learning Community (PLC) that contribute to a collaborative culture and student performance. The research question for this study was, “What experiences in a PLC do teachers perceive contribute to a collaborative culture?” …
Fostering Organizational Change Through A Solutions-Driven Culture Of Collaboration: A Case Study Of A Teachers’ Union In The Mid-Atlantic Region, Terence Che Ngwa
Fostering Organizational Change Through A Solutions-Driven Culture Of Collaboration: A Case Study Of A Teachers’ Union In The Mid-Atlantic Region, Terence Che Ngwa
Doctor of Education (Ed.D)
This case study explored how the teachers’ union in a mid-Atlantic urban school district used collaboration with the school district to foster a change in its organizational culture that was previously characterized by adversarial relationships. The change in the union culture presented a unique opportunity that led both sides to believe that there was value to short-term and long-term collaborative partnerships. The study was framed on an open systems theory of organizations and an evolutionary change theory. Evidence for the study was collected from published and unpublished data, field observations, a focus group discussion, and participant interviews. Overall, the researcher …

Evidence Based Toolkit To Improve Oncology Referrals To Palliative Care, Katelyn M. Gettel
Doctoral Projects
As cancer related mortality decreases, the number of patients living with cancer symptoms and the side effects of cancer treatment will continue to grow. In 2016, over 1.5 million Americans were newly diagnosed with cancer (American Cancer Society, 2016). Several major medical organizations including the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), and the World Health Organization (WHO) endorse the integration of palliative care into cancer care (Ramchandran, 2015). Although many cancer centers report offering palliative care, this remains largely limited to inpatient services.
The stakeholders of the hospice and palliative care division of a …
What Do Organizations Learn From Conflict? A Grounded Meta-Analysis Approach To Developing An Integrated Conflict System Roadmap, Raquel Perez
Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations
Organizational systems from a variety of fields and industries have begun to investigate and evaluate the skills, strategies, and lessons learned from conflict. Yet, many of the findings are isolated to their specific organizations or industries, decreasing the impact of the newly emerging knowledge. Due to the lack of interconnectedness in the fields and industries, this study poses the following research question: How do organizations develop skills and strategies to respond to internal and external conflict within systems? The purpose of this grounded meta-analysis was to discover what skills and strategies organizations learn through the process of managing conflict and …
Ways Of Doing: Feminist Educational Development, Emily O. Gravett, Lindsay Bernhagen
Ways Of Doing: Feminist Educational Development, Emily O. Gravett, Lindsay Bernhagen
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
In response to the recent special call in To Improve the Academy, we offer the following collaborative essay that describes how feminism is our characterizing perspective on educational development. The essay details various, interrelated facets of feminism that inform our work in the field: gender, intersectionality, power, privilege, standpoint theory, and collaboration. Not only do these facets characterize our own feminist approach to educational development—from consultations to organizational development to publications—but, we argue, they also align well with the values and approaches of the field as a whole.

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
Educational development philosophy statements provide a framework to communicate the values and beliefs that guide the practices and approaches of individual educational developers across various career stages. This paper presents narratives to illustrate how seven educational developers conceptualize the one thing that guides our work through the process of reflecting on the beliefs that we articulate through our educational development philosophy statements. Although each narrative illustrates our diverse backgrounds and philosophies, common themes are revealed relating to reflective practice, scholarly approaches, and facilitating change, which lead to improvements in student learning. This exploration suggests further opportunity to conduct research on …

Navigating Middle Of The Road Reforms Through Collaborative Community, Andrea J. Bingham, Patricia Burch
Navigating Middle Of The Road Reforms Through Collaborative Community, Andrea J. Bingham, Patricia Burch
Democracy & Education
The current wave of educational reform is complex and situated in market-based initiatives coupled with a renewed emphasis on local autonomy, deliberation, and community—middle-of-the-road reforms. In practice, schools are challenged to develop organizational forms that can support collaboration and community engagement, alongside the bureaucratic and accountability-driven reforms that demand more oversight, transparency, and demonstrable results. Our intent in this paper is to begin to map the emerging contradictions and opportunities that the complex reform climate presents for practitioners through a case study of a personalized learning charter school. In so doing, we illustrate how a community of teachers within a …
Teaching And Learning Courageous Followership: An Action Research Study, Karen Walker Schwab
Teaching And Learning Courageous Followership: An Action Research Study, Karen Walker Schwab
Theses & Dissertations
Followership has been shown to be a developmental stage of leadership. Yet, there is a lack of followership theory in the health-care context. The purpose of this qualitative action research study was to explore how introducing Chaleff’s dimensions of courageous followership influences the undergraduate nursing students’ views of the follower role and informs their nursing practice. Secondary research questions asked how knowledge of these dimensions influences the nursing students’ views while advocating, collaborating, and addressing lateral violence. Using purposeful sampling, 12 participants were recruited for this study. After attending a followership seminar, they completed online reflections and participated in individual …

We Are All Teachers: A Collaborative Approach To Digital Collection Development, Melanie Shell-Weiss, Annie Benefiel, Kimberly Mckee
Scholarship and Professional Work
In libraries and archives, efforts to document underrepresented communities and diversify collections can be fraught with political tension. We explore an interdepartmental collaboration to create and preserve a digital collection documenting the Urban Native Relocation Program of the mid- to late-twentieth century in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Involving the Grand Valley State University Libraries, the Kutsche Office of Local History, and the university’s Native American Advisory Board, the project serves as a model not just for collaborative collection development but also for community engagement and outreach. We find that process is as important as product in developing collaborative digital collections.
Earning A Seat At The Table: How It Departments Can Partner In Organizational Change And Innovation, Robert L. Moore, Nathan Johnson
Earning A Seat At The Table: How It Departments Can Partner In Organizational Change And Innovation, Robert L. Moore, Nathan Johnson
STEMPS Faculty Publications
Few would argue that the information technology department (ITD) is not an essential part of an organization. It is hard to envision a project that does not need the support of the ITD. Despite this importance, the ITD is not always involved in the management of projects. Often, the ITD is brought into the project late in the planning and development process. In many cases, the inclusion of the ITD in an advanced project stage can result in project failure where early involvement could have prevented it. Why is it that ITDs, while clearly a vital part of project implementation, …
How Does Organizational Culture Impact Rn Engagement, Veronica Anntionette Ruffin-Ellis
How Does Organizational Culture Impact Rn Engagement, Veronica Anntionette Ruffin-Ellis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Lack of RN engagement in the acute care setting can result in poor staffing, nursing shortages, increased stress levels for nurses and decreased morale. When nurses are not engaged in their work setting, quality of care suffers. A wide range of literature focuses on the importance of RN engagement; however, few health care organizations have taken the initiative to implement programs that foster RN engagement, demonstrating a gap in practice. This study examined the relationship between the levels of RN engagement and their perceptions of their organizational culture. Kolcaba's humanistic approach to meeting the needs of RN staff was used …
Incident Traffic Management Respone, Debroah Lynn Leonard
Incident Traffic Management Respone, Debroah Lynn Leonard
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) are often called upon to assist in traffic incidents. Yet little systematic research has examined the extent to which these two agencies collaborate. This gap in understanding is problematic, as a lack of collaboration may result in significant delays in the clearing of traffic incidents. The purpose of this correlational study was to investigate circumstances when the two agencies collaborated in clearing major traffic incidents, and the efficiency of the clearance of the incidents, through the measurement of normal traffic flow. The theory of the …

Collaborative Strategies Used To Reduce Billing Administrative Cost, Stella Fayomi-Olaleye
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Billing inefficiencies represent 80% of wasteful healthcare administrative costs that are projected to reach $45 billion by 2018. Potentially, a reduced billing administrative cost is estimated to yield an annual savings of $60 billion that could fund other societal needs such as jobs, wage increases, and education. Through the conceptual framework of iceberg change management model, this single case study explored collaborative strategies 3 healthcare billing managers in Dallas, Texas successfully used to reduce billing administrative costs. Data were collected through semistructured interviews and the review of company documents. Using Yin's procedure of examining, comparing, categorizing, and coding data, the …

Improving Interdisciplinary Relationships In Primary Care With The Implementation Of Teamstepps, Nicole M. Siddons
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on Thursday, July 21, 2016:
Healthcare organizations face many diverse challenges, perhaps one of the most problematic of these is the lack of interdisciplinary collaboration plaguing healthcare. This issue results in serious complications with the safety and quality of care (IOM, 1999). One example depicting ineffective collaboration among healthcare teams occurred in an urban Midwest United States city, where a Native American community clinic recently transformed their care model by adding registered nurses to their team. As a result, issues with interprofessional collaboration and teamwork arose threatening healthcare outcomes and employee engagement. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, …

The Role Of The School Leader In Collaboration Between Regular And Special Education Teachers, Jospeh Raymond Sciullo
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
In 2004, the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) aligned to language found in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA 2004). This reauthorization required students with disabilities to have access to the same curriculum as their non-disabled peers. This languages means that practices in instruction and assessment for students with disabilities must be aligned to the academic content standards established in each state (Parrish & Stodden, 2009). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of school leadership within the context of teacher collaboration and the factors that contribute to their level of …
