Before the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic began, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) was among the top priorities for global public health. Already a complex challenge, AMR now needs to be addressed in a changing healthcare landscape. Here, we analyse how changes due to COVID-19 in terms of antimicrobial usage, infection prevention, and health systems affect the emergence, transmission, and burden of AMR. Increased hand hygiene, decreased international travel, and decreased elective hospital procedures may reduce AMR pathogen selection and spread in the short term. However, the opposite effects may be seen if antibiotics are more widely used as standard healthcare pathways break …

Introduction: Until now, there are several reports on cutaneous manifestations in COVID-19 patients. However, the link between skin manifestations and the severity of the disease remains debatable. We conducted a systematic review to evaluate the temporal relationship between different types of skin lesions and the severity of COVID-19. Methods: A systematic search was conducted for relevant studies published between January and July 2020 using Pubmed/Medline, Embase, and Web of knowledge. The following keywords were used: "SARS-CoV-2" or "COVID-19" or "new coronavirus" or "Wuhan Coronavirus" or "coronavirus disease 2019" and "skin disease" or "skin manifestation" or "cutaneous manifestation." Results: Out of …

Optimizing The Use Of Telemedicine In Oncology Care: Postpandemic Opportunities, Karen E. Knudsen, Cheryl Willman, Robert Winn
Pathology Research and Scholarship
Utilization of telehealth as part of the cancer care delivery continuum dramatically escalated in response to the COVID-19 pandemic at major cancer centers across the globe. The rapid shift toward telehealth visits for nontreatment cancer care provided immediate benefit through reducing unnecessary risk of exposure, overcoming transportation barriers faced by both patients and caregivers, and fast-tracking care transformation. As such, delineating the impact of telehealth on access, health equity, quality, and outcomes will be essential for refining the use of digital strategies and telehealth toward optimizing cancer care. Herein, experiences to date with telehealth usage for oncology care are reviewed, …

Estimated 2020 Co2 Emission Reductions In Virginia’S Transportation Sector From Covid-19, Eden E. Rakes, Pamela R. Grothe, Jeremy S. Hoffman
Virginia Journal of Science
The initial lockdown phase of the COVID-19 pandemic presented an unfortunate opportunity to observe how abrupt, large-scale changes in traffic volume can reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This study explores how carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from Virginia’s transportation sector may have been affected by the changes in activity stemming from COVID-19 to inform more carbon-neutral policies as the state recovers from the economic downfall. Emission savings were calculated by multiplying the percent change from 2019 to 2020 in traffic volume from the Virginia Department of Transportation with the business-as-usual 2020 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimate of CO2 emissions …

Analyzing The Students' Learning Behaviour For A Technical Course During Covid-19, Ashu Taneja, Ishwar Dutt, Ajay Sharma
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The purpose of this paper is to analyse the learning behaviour of students towards a technical course in the two learning modes, remote learning (online) and in-person learning (offline). Due to the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic in India, the educational fraternity has successfully reached out to the students using the various virtual tools available. Although, the offline mode of teaching-learning i.e. the actual classroom interaction is quite important as far as a technical course is concerned, but during these tough times the online platforms like Zoom, Webex meetings, Google meet have made the teaching-learning feasible remotely at any time from …

Glamping After The Coronavirus Pandemic, Christopher Craig, Ismail Karabas
Glamping After The Coronavirus Pandemic, Christopher Craig, Ismail Karabas
Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity
Glamping is an increasingly popular and accessible modern form of camping. To address current and future impacts of COVID-19 on glamping, 2,926 active leisure travelers in the US and Canada were surveyed. Respondents were asked about post-COVID-19 glamping trip plans and hotel/resort trip plans for comparison. Independent variables of interest include 2019 accommodation experiences, 2020 accommodation plans prior to COVID-19, and socio-demographics. Results indicate more active leisure travelers have plans to take glamping trips (45.9%) after COVID-19 when permissible than hotel/resort trips (24.7%). The results highlight that the broad accessibility of glamping make it a viable leisure travel alternative during …

Background and Objective: Community mitigation strategies could help reduce COVID-19 incidence, but there are few studies that explore associations nationally and by urbanicity. In a national county-level analysis, we examined the probability of being identified as a county with rapidly increasing COVID-19 incidence (rapid riser identification) during the summer of 2020 by implementation of mitigation policies prior to the summer, overall and by urbanicity. Methods: We analyzed county-level data on rapid riser identification during June 1–September 30, 2020 and statewide closures and statewide mask mandates starting March 19 (obtained from state government websites). Poisson regression models with robust standard error …

COVID-19 patients with diabetes have greater morbidity and mortality. Glycated hemoglobin (A1c) indicates chronic glycemic control and is considered a standard of care in the diagnosis and management of diabetes. Whereas, fasting blood glucose (FBG) indicates acute glycemic control and is also recommended option to diagnose diabetes. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of acute and chronic glycemic control on severity and length of hospital stay among hospitalized patients with COVID-19. METHODS: This retrospective study used medical records from patients admitted to the University Medical Center, El Paso, TX with COVID-19 (n=364; age …

Fear Of Covid-19 And Adherence To Lockdown Deteriorated Police Cadets’ Handgrip Strength Relative To Bmi, Courtnie R. Moodie, Filip Kukic, Nenad Koropanovski, Ana Vesković, Nicola Petrović, Andreas Stamatis Dr., Zacharias Papadakis
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Due to COVID-19 pandemic, police academies enforced lockdowns to protect cadets’ well-being. Fear of health issues (e.g., perceived severity) influences ones’ adherence (e.g., readiness to act) to changes in exercise behavior. According to WHO, modifications in exercise behavior during the pandemic influence health status. A well-established clinical health marker is the handgrip strength relative to body mass index (HSR). The relationship between fear and physical well-being during COVID-19 is still under investigation. The mediating effect of adherence to COVID-19 restrictions on the fear-health status relationship in police cadetsis unknown. PURPOSE: To explore a) the fear-HSR relationship and …

Children with autism have difficulties in social skills and communication skills. But fortunately, currently, there are many ways developed by experts to help children with autism so that they are expected to grow and develop better, among them are social stories. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all public places closed by governments are no exception to schools. The COVID-19 pandemic is a heavy blow for children with autism, including family. They are very vulnerable to learning and emotional disorders because therapy services have stopped and distance learning is difficult for them. The purpose of this research is to find out …
