The rapid advancement of the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted an accelerated pursuit to identify effective therapeutics. Stages of the disease course have been defined by viral burden, lung pathology, and progression through phases of the immune response. Immunological factors including inflammatory cell infiltration and cytokine storm have been associated with severe disease and death. Many immunomodulatory therapies for COVID-19 are currently being investigated, and preliminary results support the premise of targeting the immune response. However, because suppressing immune mechanisms could also impact the clearance of the virus in the early stages of infection, therapeutic success is likely to depend on …

Queens Memory is a local community archiving and oral history project, co-administered by Queens Public Library and Queens College, CUNY. Due to COVID-19 safety protocols, all projects and programs were required to move to a virtual setting. While under these restricted measures, members from both institutions found an opportunity to embark on a collaborative virtual event series for our respective library communities. The programs covered current events and their historical contexts, social justice, and creating positive social change. Key ingredients fueling the success of this initiative included building relationships with multiple co-sponsors; bringing together multigenerational, diverse panelists; and creative use …

Post-Pandemic, Translational Research, And Indigenous Communities, Rodney C. Haring, Laticia Mcnaughton, Dean S. Seneca, Whitney Ann E. Henry, Donald Warne
Journal of Indigenous Research
It is well documented that American Indian/Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian/First Nations, known as Indigenous Peoples, have among the most significant health disparities in the world. Clinical services for these populations are typically underfunded, and Indigenous Peoples often have preexisting and co-occurring health conditions. These factors combined with a multitude of social inequities make Indigenous communities extremely susceptible to infectious diseases, including COVID- 19. This paper discusses perspectives on the post-pandemic frameworks and policies toward translational science as an approach to advance health promotion for community-based interventions, dissemination, and sustainability. The importance of exercising Indigenous self-determination, public health authority, and population health …

Kept In The "Anonymous Dark": An Exploration Of Touch And Isolation In The United States, Madison Tuggle
Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities
This paper examines the societal norms of touch aversion in the United States, including an example of how touch deprivation is used as a form of carceral violence, and raises questions on the shifting of these norms in the face of worldwide social isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. By using the work of psychologist Tiffany Fields, the paper begins by discussing the physical and mental necessity of touch, and the negative consequences that come with its deprivation. This discussion is then grounded in historical factors that continue to contribute to the formation of these norms, including Aristotle’s teachings, enduring …

Root Networks Of Radical Care: Mutual Aid In Minneapolis’ Abolitionist Movement, Adele Welch
Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities
In this essay, I theorize the role of mutual aid in the 2020 uprising for police and prison abolition as root networks of radical care that shook Minneapolis’ illusion of “progressive” politics from the ground up. I preface the conversation with a partial tracing of groups throughout history that have practiced collective care alongside and in service of overturning oppression such as the Zapatistas, U.S. fraternal organizations, the Black Panther Party, and disability justice organizations. I comment on mutual aid in the context of neoliberalism that attempts to privatize caring infrastructure, and finally reflect on how the Minneapolis sanctuary movement …

Economics
Purpose – This paper aims to examine the impact of the daily growth rate of COVID-19 cases in the USA (COVID), the Federal Fund Rate (FFR) and the trade-weighted US dollar index (USDX) on S&P500 index daily returns and its 11 constituent sectors’ indices for the time period between January 22, 2020, until June 30, 2020. Design/methodology/approach – The study uses the multivariate generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (MGARCH) model to gauge the impacts over the whole period of study, as well as over two sub-periods; first, January 22, 2020, until March 30, 2020, reflecting uncertainty in the US markets and …
