Global-Scale Modeling Of Early Factors And Country-Specific Trajectories Of Covid-19 Incidence: A Cross-Sectional Study Of The First 6 Months Of The Pandemic, Sujoy Ghosh, Saikat Sinha Roy

Division of Basic Science Faculty Publications

Background: Studies examining factors responsible for COVID-19 incidence have been mostly focused at the national or sub-national level. A global-level characterization of contributing factors and temporal trajectories of disease incidence is currently lacking. Here we conducted a global-scale analysis of COVID-19 infections to identify key factors associated with early disease incidence. Additionally, we compared longitudinal trends of COVID-19 incidence at a per-country level, and classified countries based on COVID-19 incidence trajectories and effects of lockdown responses. Methods: This is an observational cross-sectional study covering COVID-19 incidence over the first 6 months of the pandemic (Jan 1, 2020 to June 30, …

Health Care Transition Experiences Of Youth With Intellectual Disabilities In A Post-Secondary Inclusive Program, Faith Duensing Dec 2022

Health Care Transition Experiences Of Youth With Intellectual Disabilities In A Post-Secondary Inclusive Program, Faith Duensing

The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses

Between the ages of 18-21 years old, youth and young adults make the transition from pediatric to adult health care. While it may be an easy and seamless transition for some, that is not always the case, especially for youth and young adults with disabilities. Youth with disabilities experience several distinct health disparities compared to their peers without disabilities and these can be carried over to impact their health care transition (HCT) process. The purpose of this study was to learn more about the HCT experiences of young adults with disabilities and their families to learn and develop ways that …

Compassion Fatigue: The Impact On Nurses During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Adrian Huynh Dec 2022

Compassion Fatigue: The Impact On Nurses During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Adrian Huynh

Nursing | Senior Theses

Background

Compassion fatigue comes from the physical, emotional, and psychological impact of helping others through stressful and traumatic experiences. It is a form of fatigue linked to burnout and secondary traumatic stress. Many nurses are vulnerable to compassion fatigue from repeated exposure to the trauma of their patients. While compassion fatigue has been a continuing issue, the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the risk and number of nurses developing compassion fatigue. This can affect patient care, workplace and personal relationships, and lead to development of more serious mental health issues.

Objective

To investigate the effects of compassion fatigue on the registered …

Objective: The purpose of this literature review is to identify and evaluate how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected nurses and their well-being. The significance of this research was to establish how the ongoing pandemic has impacted nurses’ performance and …

When The Influencer Says Jump! How Influencer Signaling Affects Engagement With Covid-19 Misinformation, Ben Wasike Dec 2022

When The Influencer Says Jump! How Influencer Signaling Affects Engagement With Covid-19 Misinformation, Ben Wasike

Communication Faculty Publications

With signaling theory, credibility, and social media engagement (SME) as guiding frameworks, this study used an experiment to examine how social media influencers (SMIs) affect how people engage with COVID-19 misinformation. SMI-promoted information elicited more SME, credibility, and purchase likelihood than non-SMI promoted information. The most effective message was a post promoted by an SMI that contained detailed information about an authentic product. However, data indicated nuance regarding the effect of SMIs. The authenticity of the information as well as the amount of detail in the post played a role. Additionally, mediated effects analysis showed that the impact of SME …

A Comparison Of M&T Bank And Citizens Bank Net Income Changes During The Coronavirus Pandemic, Alex R. Glasier

Applied Economics Theses

The COVID-19 pandemic had a tremendous impact on every aspect of life, particularly within the world of banking & finance. All banks saw sharp drops in their stock prices and net income, but my hypothesis is that larger, more established banks maintained more stability during 2020 than smaller banks. This paper analyzes the income statements and balance sheets of M&T Bank (an older, more well-established bank) and Citizens Bank (a less-established bank) during this difficult time.

The first part of my thesis describes similarities and differences between M&T Bank and Citizens Bank. I explain how these similarities and differences may …

The Impact Of Covid-19 On Recreational Therapists Working In Inpatient Mental Health Settings, Summer Matics

All Dissertations

Since 2020, the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has impacted the lives of the general public, but healthcare workers including those that work in inpatient mental health settings have seen long-lasting impacts in their workplace. Recreational therapists (CTRSs) are among the mental healthcare workers that have been impacted by the pandemic but there is no existing research that specifically studies their lived experiences. This study used the theoretical foundations and methods of hermeneutic phenomenology in order to describe how COVID-19 has impacted CTRSs’ workplace from a safety perspective, their stress and coping, and also their supervisory duties. Seventeen participants were recruited and …

The Impact Of Covid-19 Pandemic On Local Fiscal Revenue: Empirical Evidence From The Regions With Dominant Tertiary Sectors, Aisyah Nurrul Jannah, Khoirunurrofik Khoirunurrofik

Economics and Finance in Indonesia

The COVID-19 crisis has devastatingly affected social and economic sectors, including service or tertiary sectors such as banking, insuran;ce, hospitality, telecommunications, and industrial services. The pandemic has also aggravated fiscal conditions along with the slowing economy. This paper aims to assess the impact of COVID-19 on local own-source revenue in regions with dominant tertiary sectors and to examine how a fiscal incentive policy can increase the local own-source revenue. We applied the difference-in-difference panel random effect method by estimating total revenue and local own-source revenue as the outcome variables. The treatment variable is the districts/cities with dominant tertiary sectors of …

Nursing Practicum Equity For A Changing Nurse Student Demographic: A Qualitative Study, Lesley Andrew, Julie Dare, Ken Robinson, Leesa Costello

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Background: The nursing practicum (clinical practice) is an essential but often highly stressful aspect of the nursing degree. A review of the published literature reveals a strong focus on the stressors that originate within the practicum environment, rather than the student’s life outside the university and practice setting. This article reports on an Australian study, completed before the COVID-19 pandemic, of the university experiences of undergraduate women nurse students with family responsibilities. The findings reveal the importance of factors outside the university on the women students’ practicum experience and their ability to engage and achieve. Methods: The study was qualitative, …

Designing For Justice: Pandemic Lessons For Criminal Courts, Cynthia Alkon Dec 2022

Designing For Justice: Pandemic Lessons For Criminal Courts, Cynthia Alkon

Faculty Scholarship

March 2020 brought an unprecedented crisis to the United States: COVID-19. In a two-week period, criminal courts across the country closed. But, that is where the uniformity ended. Criminal courts did not have a clear process to decide how to conduct necessary business. As a result, criminal courts across the country took different approaches to deciding how to continue necessary operations and in doing so many did not consider the impact on justice of the operational changes that were made to manage the COVID-19 crisis. One key problem was that many courts did not use inclusive processes and include all …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Background:

The impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have been vast and are not limited to physical health. Many adolescents have experienced disruptions to daily life, including changes in their school routine and family’s financial or emotional security, potentially impacting their emotional wellbeing. In low COVID-19 prevalence settings, the impact of isolation has been mitigated for most young people through continued face-to-face schooling, yet there may still be significant impacts on their wellbeing that could be attributed to the pandemic.

Methods:

We report on data from 32,849 surveys from Year 7–12 students in 40 schools over two 2020 survey cycles (June/July: …

Mental Health Concerns In The Pediatric Population Following Covid-19, Kristina N. Yaczik, Ashley M. Komosinski Dec 2022

Mental Health Concerns In The Pediatric Population Following Covid-19, Kristina N. Yaczik, Ashley M. Komosinski

Honors Projects

The COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to an increase in stress and mental health concerns in the pediatric population. Research indicates a decrease in pediatric mental health incidences in 2020, followed by an increase in 2021 and 2022. It is thought that the initial decrease may be due to the intensity of the pandemic at the time and a lack of hospital beds available. The increase suggests a response to the high levels of adversity and stress children and adolescents faced both during and after the origination of the pandemic. The evidence supports the idea that the COVID-19 pandemic had a …
