Armenia Combats The Coronavirus: State Capacity And The Diaspora, Shant Shekherdimian, Nerses Kopalyan
Political Science Faculty Research
Armenia's Government has taken acute measures to combat COVID-19, the novel coronavirus disease, by implementing a set of aggressive policies aimed at containing the epidemic. The perceived relative success of these measures--although it is quite premature to speak of any kind of success at this stage--also recognizes the inevitable: the virus cannot be fully contained and it is a matter of time before its transmission escalates. This is precisely what has been observed in much of Europe, Asia, and North America: containment strategies remain limited, so governments are proceeding with more complex mitigation strategies.

Public health officials consistently promote hand-washing as a way for people to protect themselves from the COVID-19 coronavirus. However, this virus can live on metal and plastic for days, so simply adjusting your eyeglasses with unwashed hands may be enough to infect yourself. Thus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization have been telling people to stop touching their faces.

Distance Education In The Time Of Coronavirus: Quick And Easy Strategies For Professors, Seth C. Oranburg
Law Faculty Scholarship
This essay, written by a law professor and a student teaching assistant, shares suggestions intended to increase student engagement and improve learning outcomes by creating and using digital teaching assets effectively. The essay briefly summarizes the literature on traditional and online law school pedagogy and then explains the Hybrid Corporation class we taught during the Spring 2020 COVID-19 emergency. We report on what worked well in our real-world classroom environment and what worked when we had to shift totally to an online delivery format. We found that good videos are critical, and we explain why and how we created what …

COVID-19 @ Whittier (full list of items)
This scan of the Quaker Campus, the student newspaper at Whittier College, was the last printed issue before the transition to online learning in March 2020. Approximately half of the issue discusses the changes and uncertainty on campus due to COVID-19. The issue details the college’s initial plans to move all classes online following Spring Break. Large-scale events for over 100 people were canceled, and professors had to rapidly adapt their teaching and class structure to an online format, which presented different obstacles across departments. Opinion articles discuss the potential repercussions of the COVID-19 virus not only on commencement, sports, …

Louisville Coronavirus Surveillance Program, Julio A. Ramirez, Kenneth E. Palmer, Ruth Carrico, Forest W. Arnold, Donghoon Chung, Leslie A Wolf
The University of Louisville Journal of Respiratory Infections
An important feature of COVID-19, the disease produced by the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, is the high number of health care workers (HCWs) that acquire the disease. In an initial report of 138 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 pneumonia in China, 40 patients (29%) were HCWs. One reason why HCWs are at higher risk of acquiring COVID-19 is that some patients with COVID-19 are admitted to the hospital without the classical presentation and are therefore not tested for the disease early during hospitalization. Presently in the US, it is recommended to test for COVID-19 when physicians suspect the disease. This subjective approach …

Proposals For Coping With "Psychological Typhoon Eye" Effect Detected In Covid-19, Xu Mingxing, Zheng Rui, Rao Lilin, Kuang Yi, Yang Shuwen, Ding Yang, Li Jianglong, Li Shu
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Psychological typhoon eye (PTE) effect describes the public's irrational panic and response to major emergencies. This phenomenon is reported and named by LI Shu and his colleagues after the Wenchuan earthquake. During the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, we conducted a worldwide survey to investigate the safety concerns and risk perception of the COVID-19 epidemic from participants staying in five areas of different levels of risk (high-risk, moderate and high-risk, moderate-risk, low-risk, and very lowrisk areas). This effect appears to hold for COVID-19. Specifically, participants staying abroad showed more safety concerns or fears of the COVID-19 epidemic than participants staying …

Most Americans are unfamiliar with governmental powers during a pandemic, which makes it useful to examine applicable legalities, powers and authorities. Importantly, that power can mandate quarantine, isolation, vaccination, decontamination, destruction of infected property, eviction, closing businesses, social distancing, sheltering in place, specimen testing, and mandating health information disclosure and health care responses.

School of Continuing and Professional Studies Coronavirus Papers
The Coronavirus is more than a health problem. It is a “wicked” problem disrupting work, education, travel, politics, financial indicators, and more. This label came about in 1973 to help describe a special class of situations that are volatile, uncertain and ambiguous, often difficult to recognize, and difficult or impossible to solve because of incomplete, contradictory, and changing requirements. There is no clear problem definition due to interdependencies so the problem cannot be fully understood until after the solution comes about.
