A Teachable Unit On Soft Corals With Instructional Method Variances, Emily Breech Dec 2017

A Teachable Unit On Soft Corals With Instructional Method Variances, Emily Breech

Honors Projects

The soft coral Sinularia flexibilis contains an aqueous alcohol extract that has shown antineoplastic activity against lymphocytic leukemia (Weinheimer and Matson, 1977). It also has other biological properties that work as antimicrobials, anti-inflammatory agents, and cytotoxicity activities (Kamel and Slattery, 2005). There is much research on the effects of flow rate on growth and morphology (Khalesi, Beeftink, & Wijffels, 2007) and the effects of light-dependency on growth rate (Khalesi, Beeftink, & Wijffels, 2009). The purpose of this student project was to further research on S. flexibilis, as well as incorporate that research into evaluating the effects of lecture-based teaching …

Integration Of Ict In Teaching And Learning Biology: A Case Study Of A Secondary School In Mvomero District, Tanzania., Jamal Hassan Mwaya

Master of Education

This study was conducted to find out how Biology teachers integrate ICT in teaching and learning activities. The plan for carrying out this study was motivated by various policies such as Education and Training Policy 1995; ICT Policy 2007, and Education Policy 2014which emphasize the integration of ICT in basic education. However, teaching and learning of Biology requires much use of technology, the information regarding to teachers if they are using ICT in teaching and learning Biology is inadequate. This qualitative research study, therefore, explored how teachers integrate ICT in teaching and learning of Biology in one of selected secondary …

Repeated Observations Of Northern Goshawks Foraging As Terrestrial Predators, Robert A. Miller Dec 2017

Repeated Observations Of Northern Goshawks Foraging As Terrestrial Predators, Robert A. Miller

Intermountain Bird Observatory Publications and Presentations

The Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis; hereafter goshawk) is a generalist predator occupying boreal and temperate forests of the Holarctic (Squires and Reynolds 1997). The diet of goshawks has been studied in many areas and varies substantially among study sites, but some avian and mammalian genera are consistently represented (Squires and Reynolds 1997, Squires and Kennedy 2006). Within the northern Great Basin of North America, the breeding-season diet of goshawks is often dominated by Belding's ground squirrels (Urocitellus beldingi, also known as Spermophilus beldingi; Younk and Bechard 1994, Miller et al. 2014). The local reliance upon …

The Characterization Of Alpha-Carbonic Anhydrases Through Mutagenesis And Subcellular Localization In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Lance E. Pounds Nov 2017

The Characterization Of Alpha-Carbonic Anhydrases Through Mutagenesis And Subcellular Localization In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Lance E. Pounds

LSU Master's Theses

Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) are zinc metalloenzymes which catalyze the interconversion of carbon dioxide and bicarbonate. It is hypothesized that CA activity facilitates CO2 flux in leaf mesophyll cells to maintain optimal rates of photosynthesis or to maintain a pool of inorganic carbon for other metabolic processes. There are three classes of CAs (α, β, and γ) in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. The βCAs and γCAs have been well studied, but the αCAs have received relatively little study. There are eight αCA genes in Arabidopsis. This study investigates which αCAs are expressed in shoots, their tissue-specific expression, their …

3d Bioprinting Patentable Subject Matter Boundaries, Tabrez Y. Ebrahim Oct 2017

3d Bioprinting Patentable Subject Matter Boundaries, Tabrez Y. Ebrahim

Seattle University Law Review

3D bioprinting combines emerging 3D printing technologies with synthetic biology. The promise of 3D bioprinting technology is to fabricate organs for transplantation, treat burn victims with in vivo skin repair, and create wearable microbiomes. 3D bioprinting can successively build, repair, or reproduce living human cells. This capability challenges eligible subject matter doctrine in U.S. patent law because the law has no brightline standard for patent eligibility for nature-based products. As 3D bioprinting technologies mature, U.S. patent law will need to respond to situations where living and nonliving worlds merge. This Article proposes a “Mixed-Scanned-Transformed” standard to supplement U.S. patent law’s …

Ribonucleoprotein Purification And Characterization Using Rna Mango, Shanker Shyam S. Panchapakesan, Matthew L. Ferguson, Eric J. Hayden, Xin Chen, Aaron A. Hoskins, Peter J. Unrau

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The characterization of RNA–protein complexes (RNPs) is a difficult but increasingly important problem in modern biology. By combining the compact RNA Mango aptamer with a fluorogenic thiazole orange desthiobiotin (TO1-Dtb or TO3-Dtb) ligand, we have created an RNA tagging system that simplifies the purification and subsequent characterization of endogenous RNPs. Mango-tagged RNP complexes can be immobilized on a streptavidin solid support and recovered in their native state by the addition of free biotin. Furthermore, Mango-based RNP purification can be adapted to different scales of RNP isolation ranging from pull-down assays to the isolation of large amounts of biochemically defined cellular …

Life Begins, Yuju Yen

Theses

My work reveals the world I see, the world I feel, and the world I imagine. The story I want to tell in my thesis is about every stunning moment when a life begins. While the sculptures and jewelry in my thesis body of work differ in scale, they are all singing the same theme: when a life starts to grow and when a flower blooms.

The forms of my thesis work are inspired from various natural lives, such as virus, fungi, jellyfish, bacteria, blooming flowers, and sea creatures. They are vividly waving, rotating, spinning their tentacles, antennas, and microfibers …

Using Pre-Assessments To Make Decisions About Differentiation In A Detracked High School Biology Classroom, Michelina Macdonald Aug 2017

Using Pre-Assessments To Make Decisions About Differentiation In A Detracked High School Biology Classroom, Michelina Macdonald

Journal of Practitioner Research

This article describes how one teacher used practitioner research to study the role that pre-assessment played when making decisions about student grouping and differentiated instruction within a detracked, honors biology classroom. Much detail is provided in this article describing the study design around a unit on protein synthesis and the steps taken in data analyses to contextualize this study within a practitioner research methodology. The teacher discusses her findings using a claim, evidence, and reasoning framework common in scientific inquiry to illustrate the effectiveness of using pre-assessment to group students for tiered instruction.

Creating A Learning Community In The Sciences, Bart De Stasio, Beth De Stasio, Brian Piasecki Aug 2017

Creating A Learning Community In The Sciences, Bart De Stasio, Beth De Stasio, Brian Piasecki

Diversity Conference 2017

Science is a collaborative discipline that is best learned through discussion, experimentation and group activity. But several groups of students—particularly students of color, first generation college students and some international students— are often marginalized in our classrooms, labs and are left out of study groups. Their voices aren’t heard, their points of view and interpretations aren’t always appreciated and the learning of these students is thwarted. To address these issues, we have been involved in forming and designing two groups that have been functioning for the past two years: LEDS (Lawrentians Enhancing Diversity in the Sciences) and BioCore, a supplementary …

Enduring Chronic Kidney Disease: An Investigation Of Psychosocial Factors And Life Satisfaction In Older Adults Receiving Dialysis Treatment, Bailee Sobotka

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Chronic kidney disease is a condition during which the kidneys begin to shut down and no longer filter blood efficiently. Once the disease has progressed far enough, dialysis treatments are mandatory to sustain life. To further understand how older adults receiving dialysis treatments cope with their disease, psychosocial factors were evaluated to investigate possible correlations with life satisfaction using a Life Satisfaction Index Z (LSI-Z). Expected correlations with life satisfaction were sociability, financial satisfaction, importance of spirituality, and activities of daily living scores. Interviews were conducted with 30 dialysis patients and results were analyzed using various statistical measures. Significant correlations …

A Comparison Of Traditional Model Surgery And Virtual Surgical Planning For Accuracy In Le Fort I Osteotomies, Joseph Barrese Jr. Aug 2017

A Comparison Of Traditional Model Surgery And Virtual Surgical Planning For Accuracy In Le Fort I Osteotomies, Joseph Barrese Jr.

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Maxillary surgeries have been performed since the 1940’s. Historically, these treatments were planned using plaster models, lateral cephalometrics, postero-anterior cephalometrics, and hand-fabrication of occlusal splints by the orthodontist or surgeon. Treatment planning was done in two-dimensions (2D) and extrapolated into a 3-dimensional plan. With new digital and technological advances, plans can be constructed in three-dimensions (3D) using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans, digital intraoral scans, computer aided simulation, and computer aided fabrication of splints. It has been suggested that this new form of virtual surgical planning (VSP) yields more desirable results. However, accuracy of surgical outcomes from traditional planning …

The Periodontal Health Status Of Invisalign Patients: A Clinical Study, Kerisa Harriott Aug 2017

The Periodontal Health Status Of Invisalign Patients: A Clinical Study, Kerisa Harriott

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Introduction: Approximately four million people use Invisalign worldwide. The aligners are typically worn twenty-two hours per day and are changed every two weeks. Patients can have plaque accumulation intraorally leading to inflammation and eventually causing attachment loss if unresolved. Research shows general trends of decreased periodontal status in fixed appliance patients when compared to Invisalign patients. Currently, there is a paucity of information about whether Invisalign aligners cause significant increases in gingival inflammation indicated by increases in pro-inflammatory markers and clinical presentation. Therefore, the objective is to investigate the increases in IL-8 and clinical periodontal parameters of patients treated with …
