Against Women’S Sports, Nancy Leong
Against Women’S Sports, Nancy Leong
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
This Article challenges the longstanding assumption that sports should be segregated by sex. Imposing sex segregation on sports is problematic for many reasons. It reflects and reinforces a long-disproven binary view of both sex and gender. It communicates that women are physically unable to compete against men, even though research indicates considerable variation among individual athletes and different sports, and further reveals that attributes other than sex are more important determinants of athletic ability. It reinforces unfounded gender stereotypes that harm both women and men. And sex segregation uncritically prioritizes athletic activities involving strengths typically associated with male bodies, without …

Perceptions Of Executive Female Leaders In Athletics, Lynnette Y. Johnson
Perceptions Of Executive Female Leaders In Athletics, Lynnette Y. Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 1981 the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) developed the designation of Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) within the membership. With the addition of women’s athletic programs in the NCAA starting in the 1981-1982 season, the NCAA knew there was a need to guarantee at least one executive woman was seated at the decision-making table to support the new female teams ("NCAA SWA brochure," 2011). Title IX legislation was already a decade old when the NCAA added women’s teams and the platform to grow women in sport was forefront (Glazor-Raymo, Townsend, & Ropers-Huilman, 2000, p. 184). Today, there are women in …
Crash And Burnout: The Sophomore Slump In College Athletics, Jessica Ferguson
Crash And Burnout: The Sophomore Slump In College Athletics, Jessica Ferguson
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This study analyzed and compared the severity of performance slumps of collegiate student-athletes in general and across academic years. The factors examined with performance slumps included athlete burnout, academic burnout, relationship satisfaction, and grade point averages. The first hypothesis was that reduced accomplishment scores from the athlete burnout questionnaire would indicate the severity of performance slumps. The results did not support the hypothesis. The second hypothesis was that the severity of performance slumps would positively correlate with academic burnout and negatively correlate with relationship satisfaction. The results supported this hypothesis. The third hypothesis was that student-athletes who experienced a performance …
Statistics And Biomechanics: An Interdisciplinary Evaluation Of The Mathematical, Practical, And Athletic Applications Of Principal Component Analysis, Sydney Grace Davis
Statistics And Biomechanics: An Interdisciplinary Evaluation Of The Mathematical, Practical, And Athletic Applications Of Principal Component Analysis, Sydney Grace Davis
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Excerpt from Introduction
Coaches and athletes around the world are in constant pursuit of improving their athletic performance. For some, a routine amount of weight lifting, cardiovascular exercise, agilities and flexibility training with gradual advancement may be enough to see growth. However, many are not satisfied and turn to in-depth analyses of their techniques in order to measure their progress. After an intense workout or competition, coaches spend time breaking down athletic performances based on major movements. By compartmentalizing these activities, they can identify which motions are efficient and which ones hinder fluid motion. From this evaluation and discernment, athletes …
A Comparison Of Hamstring Injury Recovery Rates In Male And Female Athletes, Amanda Hall
A Comparison Of Hamstring Injury Recovery Rates In Male And Female Athletes, Amanda Hall
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Excerpt from Introduction
Hamstring injuries are among the most common muscular injuries sustained by athletes across multiple levels of various sports (Askling et al). Most hamstring injuries occur during similar movements and under similar conditions, where the muscle is required to be explosive. Thus, athletes that participate in sports where “sprinting, kicking, or high-speed skilled movements” are required, experience an increased likelihood of suffering a hamstring injury (Erickson and Sherry). After injury, athletes are then subjected to different methods of rehabilitation to heal and strengthen the afflicted area. However, some athletes take longer than others to return and impatience may …

Community Connections: Relief Through Athletics, Joshua Arthur
Community Connections: Relief Through Athletics, Joshua Arthur
Architecture Theses and Projects
A sports based recreation facility can significantly enhance the quality of life in a community. Activities held within these facilities can encourage participation, promote health and well-being, and foster a sense of community and togetherness. Today with crime and obesity being increasingly troublesome in the US a space focused on athletics, health, and wellness would allow for kids to have a plethora of activities to do after school and on weekends. There they can make friends, learn about health, and stay off of the streets. Sports and recreation can demonstrate and contribute to the sustainable use of natural resources. They …

Beyond The End Line - Putting The Mental Health Of Female Athletes First, Katherine Scholten
Beyond The End Line - Putting The Mental Health Of Female Athletes First, Katherine Scholten
Honors Projects
Currently one in five adults are affected by mental illness. Student-athletes are a population that is under diagnosed for mental illness. In the world of college athletics, mental pain is as regular as physical pain. Coaches often push their athletes to suffer in silence for the betterment of the team. The NCAA has recognized the importance of mental health in college athletics, yet there is still much work to be done among universities across the country. This document is to serve as a resource and a guide on the effects of mental health among female student athletes and the best …
Utah State Women’S Soccer Pre-Game Starter Circle, Mealii Enos
Utah State Women’S Soccer Pre-Game Starter Circle, Mealii Enos
USU Student Folklore Fieldwork
The starters will take the field after having a last cheer with the entire team. We will jog over to our side and circle up. Everyone puts their arms around each other and puts their right foot forward into the circle. The circle is super tight and close. During this time people will usually start saying encouraging things, or remind the team of things we need to remember for the game. Some examples of things people will say are “C’mon guys we got this” or “Let’s play our game.” Generally, upperclassmen and seniors will be talking during this time but …
Fall/Winter 2017: Eight Championship Games Cap An Unprecedented Season, St. Norbert College
Fall/Winter 2017: Eight Championship Games Cap An Unprecedented Season, St. Norbert College
St. Norbert College Magazine 2013-2018
Green Knights fall sports teams made all eight of their conference championship games – and in five encounters, they emerged victorious. It was a remarkable achievement unprecedented at St. Norbert and perhaps across the Midwest Conference. Meanwhile, as the fall sports wrap up, basketball and hockey action begins – and it’s all we can do to keep up with the action unfolding on turf and track, boards and ice. Luckily, our videographer John Devroy (Communications) has enough Green Knights spirit to match the zest of our student-athletes and their fans. We’re happy to share Devroy’s “highlight reel” from this semester, …

Amber Rae: Yes, so it is played at the student athlete mentor spring training, um it’s a tradition that we have continued to do annually, we do it at the end of the first night of training as kind of our final, fun, competition after we’ve covered a lot of in depth information. And it’s, played similarly to spoons, um, with cards and ss—having the number of spoons minus on of the number of competitors. However the difference is that we play at the Bear Lake Training Center and we play by, hiding the spoons throughout the room um in …

Mac: Kay, so basically. We only did it once this year, but usually every travel trip that we, um [every one?] my freshman year and my sophomore year we did it every single one. [wow] So we got everybody on the team like a couple times. Um, so we, usually its on the way home from wherever we are, and usually it’s hopefully after we win, cause it’s only usually after we win and everybody is in a good mood that we play this game. So, usually a senior gets everybody to the back of the bus and says ‘everybody …
