St. Norbert College Magazine 2013-2018
Luke Karakas ’19 has spent much of his hockey career playing for teams coached by his father, Kipp Karakas ’88. After stints in junior hockey and at UW-Superior, Luke joined the St. Norbert men’s hockey team, where he now plays right wing while Kipp serves as assistant coach, working with goaltenders. Their relationship has shifted from the tough dynamic of Luke’s youth hockey days to one of mutual respect and friendship.

Names For Non-Student-Athletes, Mealii Enos
USU Student Folklore Fieldwork
The words used by student-athletes to identify non-student-athletes are “muggles”, “normies”, and “narps.” Narp stands for “non-athletic regular person.” Here are several examples of how I have used or heard these words used in conversation or how I would use these words in conversation.
“They live with two teammates and a few muggles.”
“You know [name]? Oh, well they’re a muggle you may not have met them before.”
“She’s my favorite muggle.”
“Make friends with the normies ‘cause then they can take notes for you when you miss class.”
“What a narp” or “you look like a narp.”

In the last 20 years the long jump world record of athletes with an amputation of the lower extremities has improved by over two meters. However, there is no recent research on amputee long jumping and no information about amputee long jump kinetics. In this study the take-off step of an Olympic and a Paralympic champion were analyzed with regard to jumping mechanics. A 3D motion capturing system (Vicon) and a force plate (Kistler) were used to capture kinematic and kinetic data. Inverse dynamic calculations (Dynamicus, Alaska) revealed remarkable differences with respect to mechanical loading and motor solutions between the …

Kinematic And Technical Factors For Acceleration Of Whole Body In Rotational Shot Put Technique, Tadahiko Kato, Hirofumi Kintaka, Yoshihisa Urita, Akira Maeda
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The aim of this study was to gain the knowledge about kinematic and technical parameters required for acceleration of whole body in rotational shot put technique, using three-dimensional motion analysis. 12 male shot putters participated this study. From the results, linear momentum during double support phase (DSP) (r = 0.64, 0.79, p < 0.05, 0.01) and angular momentum during flight phase (FP) and 2nd single support phase (SSP2) (r = 0.58-0.72, p < 0.05, 0.01) were closely related with throwing record, and these parameters would indicate the acceleration of whole body. In addition, path length of center of gravity at DSP related with linear momentum (r = 0.75, p < 0.01). And the velocity of right toe, right elbow and left heel were closely related with angular momentum during FP and second single support phase (SSP2). These results can be concluded that enhancement these parametars will be effective techniques for acceleration of whole body.

Modeling And Optimal Control Of Able-Bodied And Unilateral Amputee Running, Anna Lena Kleesattel, Debora Clever, Johannes Funken, Wolfgang Potthast, Katja Mombaur
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The remarkable performances of amputee athletes in sprint competitions aroused media and scientific interest and led to the question whether running-specific prostheses can be an advantage with respect to able-bodied running. The aim of this study was to bring together motion capture data and Scientific Computing methods to analyze the running motions of an able-bodied and a unilateral transtibial amputee athlete. For each of them a rigid multibody system model was created. By application of optimal control techniques, the dynamics of reference running movements from motion capture data was reconstructed for both models. The able-bodied and the transtibial amputee sprinters …
