Correlation Between Coordination Variability And Sprint Velocity In Different Skill Level, Liduan Wang, Feng Qu, Wei Wang

ISBS Proceedings Archive

The relationship between variability and motor performance may differ among different skill level subjects. The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between coordination variability and sprint velocity in athletes group and non-athletes group. Continuous relative phase method was used to quantify the coordination variability across trials. The results suggest that the correlation between coordination variability and sprint velocity are different in athletes group and non-athletes group. For Hip-Knee coordination variability of braking phase, in athletes group, there was a significant negative correlation between variability and sprint velocity, the faster the velocity was, the less variability was. But in …

Classification Of The Rotational Shot-Put Based On Duration Time Of Motion Phases, Tadahiko Kato, Kei Maeda, Shariman Ismadi Ismail

ISBS Proceedings Archive

This study aimed to investigate the relationships between throwing distance and duration times of motion phases in the rotational shot-put and attempted to classify the throw based on duration times. A total of 181 recorded trials performed by male shot-putters were obtained, and their duration time and the ratio of duration time of defined motion phases were analysed. Duration time and the ratio of duration time were not correlated with throwing distance for all motion phases. Result of a cluster analysis indicated that athletes could be classified in two groups and there were significant differences in duration time at initiation …

Kinematic Parameters Of Hurdle Clearance Motion In Young, Novice Athletes, Flora Panteli, Athanasia Smirniotou, Apostolos Theodorou

ISBS Proceedings Archive

The purpose of the present study was to assess hurdle kinematics of young athletes when clearing the first two hurdles (0.76 m height) of a simulated hurdle race. Participants run the distance from the starting line to the 2nd hurdle. All trials were video recorded in order to evaluate specific kinematic variables related to hurdle clearance motion. Results revealed that young athletes negotiate the hurdles with lower values of horizontal velocity and hurdle clearance distance parameters, and tend to adopt “a jumping action” over the hurdle compared to the motor pattern of more skilled hurdlers. Horizontal velocity variation affected …

How Hitting The Hurdle Affects Performance In The 110 M Hurdles, Ryo Iwasaki, Hironari Shinkai, Nobuyuki Ito

ISBS Proceedings Archive

This study aimed to clarify the kinematic factors of hurdle hitting and its effect on the performance in 110-m Hurdles. Three male hurdlers volunteered. The trial which from start to the second hurdle was conducted about 20 times and these trials were recorded by motion capture system with 240 Hz. From all trials, 19 Non-Hitting Trials (NHT) and 33 Hitting Trials (HT) were classified. Kinematic variables and hitting grade, which is a value obtained by root mean square of the acceleration of hurdle’s bar, were calculated. As a result, the cause of hitting the hurdle was the low height of …

Identification Of Fatigue-Related Kinematic Changes In Elite Runners Using A Support Vector Machine Approach, Bernd J. Stetter, Felix Möhler, Frieder C. Krafft, Stefan Sell, Thorsten Stein

ISBS Proceedings Archive

Understanding the kinematic changes underlying fatigue is essential in running biomechanics. The aim of this study was to identify fatigue-related kinematic changes in elite runners using a support vector machine approach. Full-body kinematics of thirteen trained runners were recorded in a non-fatigued and a fatigued state during treadmill running at their individual fatigue-speed. A support vector machine was trained and used to identify kinematic differences between the non-fatigued and fatigued state based on principal component scores. Strides during non-fatigued and fatigued running could be separated with 99.4% classification accuracy. Four upper limb (two shoulder and two elbow), four lower limb …

The Effect Of Trunk Rotation On Lower Limb Kinematics During Running – Preliminary Study, Kayla C. Hordyk, Chengtu Hsieh Jul 2020

The Effect Of Trunk Rotation On Lower Limb Kinematics During Running – Preliminary Study, Kayla C. Hordyk, Chengtu Hsieh

ISBS Proceedings Archive

The purpose of this study was to examine the running kinematics such as stride length, stride rate, speed, and joint range of motion when trunk rotation was manipulated. Six female recreational runners were recruited to perform a total of nine trials of over ground running in their comfortable speed (≈ 3.31 m/s) for natural gait, restricted trunk rotation, and exaggerated trunk rotation conditions. Exaggerating trunk rotation during running resulted in greater stride length and smaller stride rate significantly when compared to natural and restricted trunk rotation conditions. Although some of the significant change of the running kinematics were observed, the …

The Biomechanical Effects Of Rotator Cuff Taping On Muscle Activity And Throwing Velocity In Baseball Players, Kara-Lyn Harrison, Carlos Zerpa, Paolo Sanzo

ISBS Proceedings Archive

The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate the effect of taping (Kinesio tape, placebo tape, no tape) on the velocity of an overhead baseball throw and muscle activity using surface electromyography (EMG) and a radar gun in a population of baseball players. Participants (n=13) completed three maximal overhead throws while surface EMG and velocity of overhead throws was recorded. There was a statistically significant two-way interaction between tape and muscle type, F(6,66) = 2.656, p < .05. There was no statistically significant difference in throwing velocity with the application of the different taping conditions.

Upper Extremity Motion And Sprint Running: A Farewell To Arms?, Lance Brooks, Peter G. Weyand, Kenneth P. Clark

ISBS Proceedings Archive

Despite a lack of prior research on the topic, the sport coaching community has popularized the use of arm drills for athletes with the intent to enhance sprinting performance. The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of self-restricted arm motion on sprint running velocity. Track & field athletes and team sport athletes (n=15) completed 12 30-meter sprints (six with normal arm motion, six with restricted arm motion) while radar data was collected to quantify running velocity. Using a mono-exponential function, velocity profiles were created for each trial which produced four outcome variables: vmax, amax …

Any Olympic Jump That Women Can Do, Men Can Do Nearly 20% Better, Emily Mcclelland, Peter Weyand Jul 2020

Any Olympic Jump That Women Can Do, Men Can Do Nearly 20% Better, Emily Mcclelland, Peter Weyand

ISBS Proceedings Archive

Men clearly outperform women in events that depend on moving the body’s mass through space. However, the between-sex differences may vary with event specific mechanical demands. Existing observations suggest between-sex differences are relatively greater for jumping than running events. We tested this sytematically by comparing the top 50 performances for men and women in Olympic running (n=9) and three jumping (n=3) events over a recent 15-year period. We found that mean male–female difference across the three jumping events (17.8± 2.7%) was 1.5 times greater than the respective mean for the nine running events (11.2 ± 1.4%) examined. We conclude …

Step-To-Step Spatiotemporal Determinants Of Female Sprint Performance During The Entire Acceleration Phase, Sam Gleadhill, Ryu Nagahara

ISBS Proceedings Archive

The purpose of this study was to clarify the kinematic determinants of maximal effort female sprint performance during the entire acceleration phase of a single sprint. Fifteen sub-elite female sprinters completed a 60 m maximal effort sprint from starting blocks over a long force platform system. Ground reaction force data was used to calculate step length, step frequency, support time and flight time. Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient was used to clarify the association between the rate of changes in these spatiotemporal variables and acceleration at every step. Peformance determinants elucidated included the rate of changes in step length (1st …

Biomechanical Analysis Of The Fastball Thrown From The Wind-Up And The Stretch, Hunter L. Frisk, Madison J. Blankenship, Evan M. Martin, William Ebben

ISBS Proceedings Archive

This study assessed the biomechanics associated with the fastball thrown in two conditions. Fifteen men pitched from the wind-up and stretch beginning and landing on force platforms. Doppler radar was used to assess ball velocity. A paired samples t-test was used to determine differences in ball velocity, propulsive and landing phase kinetics, as well as time, distance, and subject velocity from the propulsive to landing phase. The stretch produced 5.55% more horizontal ground reaction force, a higher horizontal to vertical force ratio, 35.05% greater vertical rate of force development (RFD) in the propulsive phase, and 8.85% higher horizontal and …

Different Effects Of Approach Length On Sagittal And Frontal Joint Kinetics During A Running Single-Leg Jump, Natsuki Sado Dr., Shinsuke Yoshioka Dr., Senshi Fukashiro Prof. Jul 2020

Different Effects Of Approach Length On Sagittal And Frontal Joint Kinetics During A Running Single-Leg Jump, Natsuki Sado Dr., Shinsuke Yoshioka Dr., Senshi Fukashiro Prof.

ISBS Proceedings Archive

The approach lengths in running single-leg jumps (RSLJs) vary depending on various sports. We examined the effects of approach length on joint kinetics in RSLJ. We analysed RSLJs for height from the approaches of 1, 3, 5, and 7 steps by 10 male jumpers. The approach length did not have a main effect on hip extension torque (from 3.18±0.46 to 3.41±0.65 Nm/kg), while the hip abduction torque increased with increase in approach length (from 1.84±0.38 to 2.62±0.66 Nm/kg). The lumbosacral lateral flexors behaved similarly to the hip abductors. Results suggest that the greater frontal torques must be exerted from longer …

Examination Of Emergency Medical Services Activations For Sport- Related Injuries, Rebecca Marie Hirschhorn

Theses and Dissertations

Research examining emergency medical services (EMS) activations for sport- related injuries has been limited regarding the populations examined, inclusion criteria, and location. The management of sport-related injuries by EMS providers has also not been examined. The purpose of this study was to describe EMS activations for sport- related injuries from a national sample and describe their management by EMS. Data was obtained from the National EMS Information System Database for the years 2017 and 2018. Sport-related injuries were identified using specific ICD-10-CM codes for the incident location type and cause of injury. Cases were limited to 9-1-1 responses for patients …
