Dynamics Of Handstand Balance, Hannah Wyatt, Domenico Vicinanza, Karl Newell, Gareth Irwin, Genevieve Williams

ISBS Proceedings Archive

The purpose of this study was to identify parameters that are associated with more successful motor control during handstand performance. For two groups of gymnasts, ‘less skilled’, who were able to hold handstands for 4 to 6s, and ‘more skilled’, who held handstands in excess of 10s, centre of mass (CoM) and centre of pressure (CoP) motion during the initial 3s of the handstand stability phase were analysed, as well as the 6 to 9s stabilised period for the more skilled gymnasts (balance phase). Time-space, time-frequency, CoM-CoP coherence, Hurst Exponent and CoM-CoP causality were investigated in anterior-posterior (AP) and medio-lateral …

Running Biomechanics Improve Following An In-Season Intervention Program Based On Pre-Test Functional Movement Screen Scores In Collegiate Distance Runners, Monique Mokha, Yelizaveta Buluchevskaya, Amanda Leon

ISBS Proceedings Archive

The purpose of the study was to determine if 12-weeks of correcting underlying movement patterns (stepping, squatting, lunging) would change running mechanics in college distance runners. 10 runners underwent pre and post Functional Movement Screen (FMS) testing and motion analysis of running kinematics [bilateral peak hip adduction (HADD), hip internal rotation (HIR), contralateral pelvis drop (CPD), rearfoot eversion (REV), ankle dorsiflexion (AKD) and knee flexion (KFLEX)]. They performed corrective exercises 3x/week based on FMS results. FMS (pre 14 + 1.5 vs post 16.4 + 1.8, p=.001) and left KFLEX (pre 36.4o + 11.3o vs post 42.2o …

Knee Joint Kinematics Of Support Leg During Maximal Instep Kicking In Female Soccer Players, Keiko Sakamoto Jul 2020

Knee Joint Kinematics Of Support Leg During Maximal Instep Kicking In Female Soccer Players, Keiko Sakamoto

ISBS Proceedings Archive

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of knee motion of support leg during maximal instep kicking on female soccer players. Their kicking motions were recorded by a motion capture system. The range of motion of knee angle (knee variation) was caluculated. There were significant negative relationships of foot velocity with knee variation (r =0.73, p < 0.05). The participants were divided into small (n = 8) and large (n = 8) variation groups based on their change amount of support leg knee angle during forward swing. Foot velocity, vertical hip velocity of kicking leg, and vertical centre of pelvis displacement during forward swing phase of small knee variation group than those of large variation group were found significant differences (p < 0.05). These results suggested that training for female players should focus on reducing knee angular displacement (flexion) of support leg during forward swing phase in instep kicking.

The Relationship Between Pitch Velocity And Shoulder Distraction Force And Elbow Valgus Torque In Collegiate And High School Pitchers, Kristen F. Nicholson Jul 2020

The Relationship Between Pitch Velocity And Shoulder Distraction Force And Elbow Valgus Torque In Collegiate And High School Pitchers, Kristen F. Nicholson

ISBS Proceedings Archive

The purpose of this study was to 1) determine the relationship between baseball pitching velocity, shoulder distraction force, and elbow valgus torque, and 2) compare these relationships between college and high school baseball pitchers. Biomechanical pitching reports from collegiate and high school baseball pitchers were analysed with linearity not assumed. A total of 273 pitches were included in this study. Pitching velocity exhibits a positive linear relationship with both shoulder distraction force and elbow valgus torque among high school and college pitchers. However, when only examining pitches thrown above 85 mph, only high school pitches have a positive linear relationship …

Multi-Segment Contributions To Induced Ball Velocity In Collegiate Baseball Pitchers, Arnel Aguinaldo, Kristen Nicholson, Gordon Alderink, Thomas Kepple

ISBS Proceedings Archive

The purpose of this study was to implement an induced acceleration analysis (IAA) to estimate the contributions of multi-segment motion to the forward velocity of the ball in collegiate baseball pitchers. Marker-based motion capture and ground reaction force data were collected from a sample of 17 pitchers throwing off an instrumented mound. Kinematic and kinetic data were extracted to drive the IAA model to calculate the muscular and non-muscular contributions to ball velocity. The shoulder joint torque and velocity-dependent torque collectively made up the largest contribution to the total induced velocity of the ball at 61% and 37%, respectively. The …

A Comparison Of Trunk And Shank Angles Between Elite And Sub-Elite Sprinters During Sprint Acceleration, Byron J. Donaldson, Helen Bayne, Neil E. Bezodis

ISBS Proceedings Archive

Acceleration is a movement that requires skilful positioning of the body to apply force in the desired direction. The sagittal plane orientation of the trunk and shank are features that coaches use to visually assess sprint acceleration technique. This study examined differences in trunk and shank angles between elite and sub-elite sprinters during early acceleration using inertial sensors. Elite sprinters exhibited more vertical trunk positions throughout all four steps compared to sub-elite with moderate to very large differences at discrete events (d = 0.79 - 2.16). Shank angles were more vertical at touchdown in sub-elite compared to elite sprinters (d …

Differences In Reaction Force-Time Characteristics Experienced By Females When Running On A Track At Different Speeds, Harper E. Stewart, Jill L. Mcnitt-Gray Jul 2020

Differences In Reaction Force-Time Characteristics Experienced By Females When Running On A Track At Different Speeds, Harper E. Stewart, Jill L. Mcnitt-Gray

ISBS Proceedings Archive

Elite collegiate runners are susceptible to sustaining lower extremity stress related injuries. Ground reaction forces (GRFs) were analyzed to understand differences in mechanical loading at steady state 5.5 and 7 min/mile paces. We hypothesized GRF magnitudes would increase with speed while horizontal GRFs during braking would be unique to each participant. GRFs, inertial measurement units, and high speed video were collected during outdoor over ground running. Group differences were observed that were not always significant within participant. As speed increased, average horizontal GRF during braking (-0.25 to -0.29 BWs) decreased while peak vertical GRF increased (2.75 to 2.91 BWs). The …

This study compares sprint start response times (RT) derived from load cells in the blocks with a RT from rail mounted accelerometer using methods similar to World Athletics (WA) approved start information systems (SIS). Seven national and international sprinters completed sprint trials that replicated race competition start procedures. Load cells were incorporated into starting blocks and the back block RT were analysed using: visual inspection (Visual RT), a 3SD threshold and CUSUM method, the rail accelerometer RT were analysed using a Visual RT and a 3SD Threshold method. On average the Rail Visual RT was detected 21 ms after the …

Inter-Limb Coordination During Sprint Acceleration, Helen Bayne, Byron Donaldson, Neil Bezodis Jul 2020

Inter-Limb Coordination During Sprint Acceleration, Helen Bayne, Byron Donaldson, Neil Bezodis

ISBS Proceedings Archive

Bilateral coordination is inherent to running motions but has not been investigated during sprint acceleration. The purpose of the study was to examine inter-limb thigh coordination during the first four steps of sprint acceleration in elite and sub-elite athletes. Anti-phase coordination patterns predominated in each step, but the proportion of anti-phase motion was higher in elite athletes (85.9 ± 10.8%) than sub-elite athletes (76.8 ± 10.9%, ES 0.83). Coordination profiles suggest that sub-elite athletes exhibit longer periods of the trailing (+) pattern around the time of touchdown (swing thigh flexing, stance thigh fixed) and the leading (-) pattern in the …
