Understanding Latino Ethnic Identity Development: A Review Of Relevant Issues, Azara Rivera-Santiago
Understanding Latino Ethnic Identity Development: A Review Of Relevant Issues, Azara Rivera-Santiago
New England Journal of Public Policy
One of the most promising areas in cross-cultural psychology is the development of identity among various ethnic groups in the United States. This article has a twofold purpose. First, it offers the concept of ethnic identity as defined and studied within the social sciences — sociology, anthropology, and psychology — including a review of some of the recent work on ethnic identity development proposed by leading investigators in the field of psychology. The author discusses their generalizability across ethnic groups. Second, it presents a number of dimensions considered important in conceptualizing and studying Hispanic ethnic identity development. These include acculturation, …
Giving Voice To The Spirits: Storytelling In The Service Of Belizean Literacy, Gerald Joseph Kelly
Giving Voice To The Spirits: Storytelling In The Service Of Belizean Literacy, Gerald Joseph Kelly
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examines the participation of indigenous storytellers in a textbook project undertaken by Belizean educators. A qualitative study of these narrators, who contributed both traditional stories and personal narratives, extended from February 1991 until February 1996 in Belize's Toledo District. Featured narrators were interviewed and audio-taped by the author throughout this time period, as they contributed their oral lore to the project.
This investigation reveals the complex interrelationships of anthropological salvage and cultural renewal. Certain contemporary scholars decry what they perceive as the limited pastoral dimension of salvage, which may suggest that the true value of traditional stories lies …

Meat And Potatoes: Recipes For A Range Of Egalitarianism In Three Hunter-Gatherer Societies, Amy Vlassia Margaris
Meat And Potatoes: Recipes For A Range Of Egalitarianism In Three Hunter-Gatherer Societies, Amy Vlassia Margaris
Honors Papers
Throughout most of human history our ancestors lived by hunting and gathering. Only within the last ten to fifteen thousand years have alternative forms of social organization developed, duly labeled by anthropologists and archaeologists: agricultural, pastoral, and complex state societies, lineal tribes, and a host of other terms which pass in and out of favor in our ongoing (and inescapably human) attempts to categorize our own kind.
Classification lies at the heart of science, and anthropology is certainly no exception. However, categorization of any degree (which requires generalization) runs the risk of obscuring important differences between cultural groups. The trick …

God Is As God Does: Law, Anthropology, And The Definition Of "Religion", James M. Donovan
God Is As God Does: Law, Anthropology, And The Definition Of "Religion", James M. Donovan
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
This Article first discusses the judicial deliberations upon the definition of religion. That discussion adopts a chronological sequence because, in legal matters, that is the one that counts.
It can be a tedious, but not particularly difficult task to summarize the legal struggle to define religion. The strategy applied to evaluate the product of that struggle is intellectual triangulation, whereby bearings from two fixed positions are used to specify that of that third. By analogy, the correct definition of "religion" can be identified by finding where the legal efforts intersect with an independent sighting of the same target. Where this …

Relating Psychological Measures To Anthropological Observations: Procrastination As A Field Proxy For Death Anxiety?, James M. Donovan
Relating Psychological Measures To Anthropological Observations: Procrastination As A Field Proxy For Death Anxiety?, James M. Donovan
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
Anthropologists frequently incorporate psychological concepts such as death anxiety into their sociocultural theorizing, but are reluctant to use the psychological instrumentation quantifying these concepts. Due to the needs of ethnographic fieldwork, behavioral proxies should be identified for psychological concepts wherever possible. Two exploratory studies investigate whether procrastination might serve as just such a proxy for death anxiety. While significant results were found, they are too weak for the intended field application.
Ideology Between Fiction And Fantasy, Slavoj Zizek
Ideology Between Fiction And Fantasy, Slavoj Zizek
Cardozo Law Review
In his movie version of Franz Kafka's The Trial, Orson Welles accomplished an exemplary anti-obscurantist operation by way of reinterpreting the place and the function of the famous parable on "the door of the Law." In the film, we hear it twice: at the very beginning, it serves as a kind of prologue, read and accompanied by (faked) ancient engravings projected from lantern-slides; then, shortly before the end, it is told to Josef K., not by the priest (as in the novel), but by K.'s lawyer (played by Welles himself) who unexpectedly joins the priest and K. in the …

Review Of: Australian Rock Art: A New Synthesis, Paul Faulstich
Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research
Rock-art studies have now come of age, and are among the most fertile explorations of expressive culture. Through an interdisciplinary approach to its study, we have expanded our knowledge into the realms of aesthetics, belief systems, and social structures. Australian rock an is particularly significant, since it is a visual expression that has been practiced by contemporary as well as prehistoric Aboriginals. Robert Layton's most recent book -his "new synthesis" of Australian rock art- is an ambitious and successful analysis of Aboriginal rock art from across the continent.

Uneasy Alliances: Belief And Action On A Geropsychiatric Team, Elizabeth Blesedell Crepeau
Uneasy Alliances: Belief And Action On A Geropsychiatric Team, Elizabeth Blesedell Crepeau
Doctoral Dissertations
This ethnographic study explores the influence of two competing ideologies, the medical model and the empowerment model, on the actions of staff on an acute geropsychiatric unit. The medical model emphasizes the professional power of the physician and other health care workers. In contrast the empowerment model emphasizes the autonomy of patients and their role in directing their care. Since these beliefs are contradictory, staff may feel conflict no matter how they act. The tacit nature of these beliefs mask the source of this tension. The mission of the unit is to enhance the independence of people over 60 with …

Empowerment And The Transition To Housing For Homeless Mentally Ill People: An Anthropological Perspective, Norma C. Ware, Robert R. Desjarlais, Tara L. Avruskin, Joshua Breslau, Byron J. Good, Stephen M. Goldfinger
Empowerment And The Transition To Housing For Homeless Mentally Ill People: An Anthropological Perspective, Norma C. Ware, Robert R. Desjarlais, Tara L. Avruskin, Joshua Breslau, Byron J. Good, Stephen M. Goldfinger
New England Journal of Public Policy
Often lacking in scholarly and policy-oriented discussions of homelessness are contextualized understandings of the problems faced, and the values held, by homeless mentally ill people. This article, using an anthropological perspective, examines issues that arise for homeless mentally ill individuals in making the transition from shelter living to permanent residences. The transition occurs as part of a housing initiative driven by the philosophy of consumer empowerment. Project participants are placed in independent apartments or evolving consumer households (ECH) — shared, staffed residences designed to transform themselves into consumer-directed living situations over time. The effects of an empowerment paradigm on the …
Charisma, Empathy, And The Experience Of Telepathy, James M. Donovan
Charisma, Empathy, And The Experience Of Telepathy, James M. Donovan
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
A critique is offered of the preference of parapsychology for physical explanatory models for telepathy. Discussion shows this trend emerging from the combined effects of historical accident. An alternative explanatory model is offered which draws upon the rich but underutilized psychological foundations of parapsychology. Emphasizing telepathy's original definition as a communication event, two other phenomena are held to fall into the same class of events: charisma and empathy. Concepts traditionally used to understand charisma and empathy are shown to be equally suited for modeling telepathy. Experimental, theoretical, and especially philosophical implications of this "possible world" model are addressed throughout.

Summer Revisions: An Ethnographic Study Of High School Teachers In The Culture Of A Summer Writing Program, Bonnie S. Sunstein
Summer Revisions: An Ethnographic Study Of High School Teachers In The Culture Of A Summer Writing Program, Bonnie S. Sunstein
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation uses the term "culture" as a metaphor to describe teachers as they participate in the three-week summer writing program at the University of New Hampshire. Using ethnographic methodology, it blends composition theory, anthropology, folkloristics, and psychology. In the voice of the participant observer, the study describes and interprets both the people and the event as a "readable social institution." Teachers live inside a close collegial environment, a temporary, "liminal" state, away from their home and school responsibilities. They form a dialectical relationship with the "culture" as they write and talk inside a social environment in which other teachers …

Estimates Of Census Underenumeration Based On Genealogies, John W. Adams, Alice Bee Kasakoff

We have been studying the migrations of the descendants of nine men who came to Massachusetts before 1650 and have compiled a computerized database that includes all the people born before 1860 in the patrilines. Thus we have what the nine genealogists who studied these families thought was close to a complete list of family members alive in 1850. Here we focus on our attempts to find these individuals on the 1850 federal census.
One Hundred Years Of Investigations At The Linn Site In Southern Illinois, Charles R. Cobb
One Hundred Years Of Investigations At The Linn Site In Southern Illinois, Charles R. Cobb
Faculty Publications
The Linn site represents one of the major Mississippian occupations in the Mississippi River floodplain of southwestern Illinois. The multiple mound center has received sporadic professional attention over the years dating from Bureau of Ethnology investigations in the latter part of the nineteenth century; however, little work by modern standards has been conducted at the site. Consequently, very little is known about the Linn site and its relationship to other Mississippian traditions in surrounding regions. This study synthesizes data from past research on the site, the results of which indicate that the Linn site likely played a major role in …

The Archaeology Of The Longue Durée: Temporal And Spatial Scale In The Evolution Of Social Complexity On The Southern Northwest Coast, Kenneth M. Ames
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
The emphasis on temporal and geographic scale of the French Annales school of history (cf. Braudel 1980; Baker 1984; Lewthwaite 1988) is the inspiration for this paper. Braudel (1980) divides time into three durations: short term events (days, weeks, months, a few years), medium length conjunctures (years, decades, even major portions of centuries), and long term structures (which may last centuries, even millennia). This last duration is the longue durée. Basic to Annales' thought - and the longue durée - is the idea that to understand historical developments, to explain their causes and dynamics, one must know their temporal and …

Sanctions And Rewards In The Legal System: A Multidisciplinary Approach, A Wr Carrothers
Dalhousie Law Journal
This book consists of ten essays on the general theme of effective techniques for controlling and regulating social behaviour. The authors draw on the disciplines of management studies, history and criminology, public policy studies and economics, psychology, anthropology, law, sociology, and political science. They are, collectively, a modern manifestation of Roscoe Pound's concept of law in action as "social engineering".
