Comment, D. Rochleau, Claudia Radel

Brosius raises a series of questions that emanate from recent encounters between critical anthropology and environmental discourses and movements. Drawing upon insights from feminist theory, we propose to expand and enrich these questions as they relate to intersections of identity and environmental movements, policy, and positionality. Brosius’s analysis of research on environmental social movements, discourse, and images repeatedly touches on the complex processes of identity and representation. Perhaps most striking is his implicit dichotomization of essential and strategic identities. Our comments first focus on the issue of environmental essentialisms, their deployment by various actors, and their potential unmasking by researchers. …

Basics Of Research (Part 12): Qualitative Research, Cheryl Thompson, B. Lee Walker Apr 1998

Basics Of Research (Part 12): Qualitative Research, Cheryl Thompson, B. Lee Walker

Journal Articles: College of Nursing

Although both the assumptions and methods of qualitative and quantitative approaches in nursing research are different, both have the goal of furthering the scientific basis for practice. A variety of qualitative approaches are available, and which approach to use depends on the purpose of the research. In general, qualitative investigations address broad questions related to description, discovery, or theory building, and, as a consequence, the researcher is concerned with the entire context surrounding the phenomenon of interest rather than concentrating on specific variables thought to influence that phenomenon. The type of data collected and the methods of analysis differ, but …

Mormons, Scripture, And The Ancient World: Studies In Honor Of John L. Sorenson, Davis Bitton Jan 1998

Mormons, Scripture, And The Ancient World: Studies In Honor Of John L. Sorenson, Davis Bitton

Maxwell Institute Publications

This multidisciplinary volume of essays was written by colleagues and former students of John L. Sorenson as a tribute to his lifetime of contributions to our understanding of Book of Mormon and anthropological scholarship.

The contributing authors present their original research findings on such diverse topics as nineteenth-century Mormon funeral sermons, the question of Nephite kingship, the Isaiah commentaries in the Book of Mormon, early Mormon publishing efforts in the Pacific Mission, and evidences of transoceanic diffusion in pre-Columbian times.

Literacies Without Judgment: Composing A (Con)Text For Cultural Healing In Northeast Brazil, Francisco Silva Cavalcante Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

In this study the researcher describes and interprets the experiences with Projeto (Con)texto, a research group created in Northeast Brazil composed of eleven people with different levels of formal schooling, social classes and ages varying from 14 to 50 years old. The researcher explores the dynamics of the Brazilian relational universe and its impact on people's lives, the multiple forms of letramento (literacies) used by people in a certain cultural context to construe and convey meaning, and the process of strengthening of one's self to deal with cultural conflicts through cultural healing.

The researcher gathered descriptive data during one year …

Child Sexual Abuse In Ireland: An Historical And Anthropological Note, Kevin Lalor Jan 1998

Child Sexual Abuse In Ireland: An Historical And Anthropological Note, Kevin Lalor

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

Child sexual abuse in Ireland has entered the public domain only in the last twenty years. This process was accelerated by a number of high profile cases which became public in the mid-1990s. Prior to the recent past, few references to child sexual abuse in Ireland exist. The fIrst written evidence is found in the penitentials of the early Christian period. Penance is specified for those that "misuse" children. Mention of adult child sexual relations is also found in the Brehon Law Texts. Historians, sociologists and anthropologists of childhood suggest that patterns of child rearing vary across time and place …

Anthropology And Ethnicity: From Herder To Hermeneutics, Jack Eller Jan 1998

Anthropology And Ethnicity: From Herder To Hermeneutics, Jack Eller

Ethnic Studies Review

For a long time, the central focus of anthropology has been on the study of the so-called traditional societies. However, with the transformation of those societies into "ethnicized" groups within state systems, anthropologists have had to rethink their concepts, theories, and methods. They have had to deal with, among others things, issues of cultural difference, cultural boundaries, and cultural movements. This article looks retrospectively at certain changes that have taken place in anthropology especially with regard to the study of ethnicity.

Making Histories: The Torres Strait Expedition Of 1898, Elizabeth Edwards Dec 1997

Making Histories: The Torres Strait Expedition Of 1898, Elizabeth Edwards

Pacific Studies

The Cambridge Torres Strait Expedition used photography to address two agendas, both of which were grounded in the temporal ambiguities of photography. Photography was used first as an integrated tool of anthropological investigation, particularly in the field of salvage ethnography and through “reenactment”; and second as a site of social interaction between the expedition and the Torres Strait Islanders through the exchange and display of photographs. I argue that these two agendas and their function as “history” are grounded in the temporal ambiguities inherent in photographic inscription. The first, the scientific, depended on the construction and representation of a “static” …

Psychic Unity Constraints Upon Successful Intercultural Communication, James M. Donovan, Brian A. Rundle Aug 1997

Psychic Unity Constraints Upon Successful Intercultural Communication, James M. Donovan, Brian A. Rundle

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

This article begins with the unchallenged assertion that intercultural communication episodes are necessarily imperfect. The disciplinary corpus reflects the correct assumption that much of this failure is attributable to the lock of various competencies on the part of the communicants. Experts become vague, however, where the line should be drawn, if at all, beyond which increased competency will not yield improved communication.

The principle of psychic unity assures us that there will be some experiences (not many, but some) which are so far removed from the ordinary processes of categorization and conceptualization that the raw data cannot be encapsulated faithfully …

Stratigraphy, Chronology, And Social Context Of David Malo's Kalepolepo Church Site From The Island Of Maui, Jeanne A. Pepalis Jan 1997

Stratigraphy, Chronology, And Social Context Of David Malo's Kalepolepo Church Site From The Island Of Maui, Jeanne A. Pepalis

Honors Capstones

This paper examines data from the Kalepolepo Church Site on the island of Maui, a mid-19th century pondfield and church site. A series of pondfield layers were identified that precede the construction of the church, separated by regular flood intervals. A variety of material culture was recovered, including burnt charcoal, shell midden, pollen and phytoliths. Radiocarbon evidence indicates that the earliest pondfield floor dates to 1410 BP (table 1). Charcoal concentrations suggest early burning of coastal vegetation, corroborated by the pollen samples which suggest a sudden replacement of indigenous coastal vegetation by coastal grasses and shrubs. Extremely high concentrations of …

Measuring Justice: Notes On Fish, Foucault, And The Law, Steven J. Mailloux Jan 1997

Measuring Justice: Notes On Fish, Foucault, And The Law, Steven J. Mailloux

English Faculty Works

My paper can be described in several ways. It is an illustration of something I call rhetorical hermeneutics: the use of rhetoric to practice theory by doing history (Mailloux 1989). It is also part of a larger project on "The Ancients and the Postmodem": an argument that much poststructuralist thought in law, critical theory, and other human sciences can be usefully understood as a contemporary reception of classical Greek rhetoric and philosophy (Shankman 1994, Mailloux 1995, Zuckert 1996). In the following remarks, I suggest how Michel Foucault's genealogical work is both derived from and employed in a reading of Plato …

On Using The Past In Sextus Empiricus: The Case Of Democritus, Emidio Spinelli Dec 1996

On Using The Past In Sextus Empiricus: The Case Of Democritus, Emidio Spinelli

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

If we draw the conclusions from a quick reconstruction of the presence of Democritean doxai in Sextus, we could underline that he seems to use them with the precise (and often explicit) intention of reaching at least two purposes, both functional to the attitude he constantly shows vis-à-vis philosophic past. These purposes are — it seems to me — the following:

a. the first one, that of taking advantage of D.'s doctrines as an integrating part of the diaphoniai that he builds (or that he inherits from the Pyrrhonian tradition which preceded him), always presenting D. as a Dogmatist among …

An Anthropologist In Middle-Earth, Virginia Luling

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

The author is an anthropologist who works as a campaigner for indigenous people’s rights. From this perspective she has some thoughts about Tolkien’s work as a vision of an unwesternized Europe, and on the re-enchantment of the world.
