IIMB Management Review

Consensus means 'agreement among all participating stakeholders'. This sounds well nigh impossible. How canall the stakeholders, with their differing interests and beliefs about an issue, a dispute, or a problem, ever come togetherand sit down to resolve the issue amicably, with everyone feeling happy about the outcome?!

The Athlete As Trickster, Gerald Gems Jan 2001

The Athlete As Trickster, Gerald Gems

Ethnic Studies Review

This study invokes hegemony theory to analyze the role and uses of sport as a means to resist dominant group pressures and the adaptation of sporting practices to subordinate groups' needs. The study draws upon literary and anthropological works that support the role of the trickster as a resistive, even manipulative figure, who fulfills both instructive and psychological needs for particular subordinate groups.

Life On The Edge: Community And Trade On The Anglo -American Periphery, Pemaquid, Maine, 1610--1689, Neill De Paoli

Doctoral Dissertations

Seventeenth-century New England's northern frontier has been an important but poorly understood place of contact between a diverse array of English, French, and Indian actors who traded, socialized, and fought with one another over land, commercial and political alliances. The English fishing settlement of Pemaquid was a key player in this world. Pemaquid emerged as one of New England's earliest year-round settlements after its beginning as a migratory fishing station in the early 1610s. In those early years, Pemaquid benefited and paid for its strategic position on the northern edge of New England. It was situated in a region that …

Some Philosophical, Political And Legal Implications Of American Archeological And Anthropological Theory, John W. Ragsdale Jr

Faculty Works

Archaeological and anthropological theories about the origins and practices of ancient peoples, and about events and histories, distant in time, but blending into the present, have had impacts that transcend the tenets and borders of the sciences as discrete disciplines. Our suppositions about the factual past can influence our present beliefs - not only our understandings and conclusions about the tangible and practical - but our feelings and faiths about the intangible and the spiritual as well. Our values, principles, world views, and cosmologies may thus be shaped by our scientific backdrop. Beyond this, our social activity, our national policy, …

The Dillow’S Ridge Site And The Production Of Mill Creek Chert Tools, Brian M. Butler, Charles R. Cobb Jan 2001

The Dillow’S Ridge Site And The Production Of Mill Creek Chert Tools, Brian M. Butler, Charles R. Cobb

Faculty Publications

The Dillow's Ridge site (11 U635) is a small Mississippian village situated on an unplowed hilltop near the largest known Mill Creek chert quarry in Union County, Illinois. The site was both a permanent residential settlement and a major workshop where Mill Creek chert tools were produced for nonlocal use. Radiocarbon dates document the occupation from the late 1200s A.D. to A.D. 1450 or 1500. The production debris and rejects indicate that the major “export" products were hoes and Ramey knives. Although the quantity of lithic debris on the site is very impressive, estimates of annual production of large biface …

Preservation And Interpretive Plan For The Dill Tract Civil War Earthworks On James Island, South Carolina, Steven D. Smith

Faculty Publications

Beginning in the late fall of 1862 the Confederate Army defending Charleston began work on a line of earthworks and batteries across James Island, South Carolina, from Secessionville to the Stono River. The lines were called the "New Lines" to distinguish them from other lines built in 1861. Today, approximately 3,000 feet of these lines still exist in very good condition on a 17.3 acre tract of land that represent a portion of the Dill Tract. The tract and earthworks (archaeological site 38CH 195) are part of a noncontiguous district listed on the National Register of Historic Places and are …

A Brazilian Challenge To Lewis's Explanation Of Cult Mediumship, James M. Donovan Aug 2000

A Brazilian Challenge To Lewis's Explanation Of Cult Mediumship, James M. Donovan

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Recruitment into peripheral possession trance cults has been explained as attempts to compensate for socio-economic deprivation and jural impotence. This model, best developed by I.M. Lewis, is reviewed and its predictions tested against two types of Brazilian data. Firstly, national census figures of religious affiliation are compared with measure of socio-economic stress for a diachronic analysis. A second, synchronic analysis involves 62 respondents in Rio de Janeiro who completed questionnaires on socio-economic status, cultic affiliation, and perceptions of stress and gender inequality. The results offer only weak support for Lewis's original model, which may therefore profit from supplementation from other …

No Somos Nada: Ethnicity And Three Dominant And Contradictory Indigenist Discourses In Costa Rica, Karen Stocker Jun 2000

No Somos Nada: Ethnicity And Three Dominant And Contradictory Indigenist Discourses In Costa Rica, Karen Stocker

Research Papers

According to many scholars, discourse has the capacity to create the nation rather than simply reflect it. By purporting to objectively describe reality, various texts turn into authoritative voices that determine the ways in which readers perceive that reality. In the case of the Chorotega of Costa Rica to be discussed here, three dominant indigenist discourses--historical,legal, and anthropological-- have formed a trinity of contradictory, yet definitive, authoritative voices regarding the description and definition of Costa Rican indigenous peoples. These three discourses simultaneously create an absence and an ambiguous presence of indigenous peoples in Costa Rica, generally, and of the Chorotega, …

The Universal Grammar Of Criminal Law, Stuart P. Green May 2000

The Universal Grammar Of Criminal Law, Stuart P. Green

Michigan Law Review

There is something about the criminal law that invites comparative analysis. The interests it protects are so basic, and its concerns so fundamental, that it is natural to ask whether there are aspects of criminal law that are somehow universal. We want to know whether familiar concepts such as murder and manslaughter, intent and negligence, and insanity and mistake, are characteristic of other systems of criminal law as well, and, if so, what role they play there. In the last generation, no criminal law scholar has made better use of comparative law techniques than George Fletcher, the Cardozo Professor of …

Settlement Patterns And The Origins Of African Jamaican Society: Seville Plantation, St. Ann's Bay, Jamaica, Douglas V. Armstrong, Kenneth G. Kelly Apr 2000

Settlement Patterns And The Origins Of African Jamaican Society: Seville Plantation, St. Ann's Bay, Jamaica, Douglas V. Armstrong, Kenneth G. Kelly

Faculty Publications

Archaeological and historical research at Seville Plantation, Jamaica, are used to explain changes in settlement patterns within the estate's African Jamaican community between 1670 and the late nineteenth century. Sugar plantations, such as Seville, are marked by well-defined spatial order based upon economic and power relations that was imposed upon enslaved communities by planters and managers. Archaeological evidence is used to explore how enslaved Africans modified this imposed order and redefined boundaries in ways that correspond with the development of a distinct African Jamaican society. The rigidly defined linear housing arrangements initially established by the planter, and their relations to …

Africanized Honey Bee Colonization In The Human Domain: Issues Of Environmental Anthropology In Southern Nevada, Daniel Edward Lebas Jan 2000

Africanized Honey Bee Colonization In The Human Domain: Issues Of Environmental Anthropology In Southern Nevada, Daniel Edward Lebas

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Environmental anthropology seeks to identify issues and propose resolutions when humans are directly affected by environmental consequences or indirectly by policies that may marginalize the concerns of certain populations. Africanized Honey Bees created both environmental and policy consequences in southern Nevada. Identification of the issues was accomplished with literature review, participant observation, informal interview, and conferencing with academic and agency officials related to the human/bee problem. The controversy in risk assessment has implications for urban residents in southern Nevada. Both agricultural and urban environments may be economically and politically impacted by the colonization of feral Africanized Honey Bees. Urban populations …
