Some Effects Of Calcium On Growth, Yield And Mineral Content Of Pepper (Capsicum Annuum L.)., Patrick Emeka Igbokwe
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Two different greenhouse experiments were conducted to determine the effects of sources and levels of Ca on the growth, yield and mineral contents of bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) cv. 'Keystone Resistant Giant #4' grown on Cahaba silt loam. The CaCO(,3) produced plants that had significantly better growth, greater yield and higher nutrient uptake than did the control plants during the spring, summer and fall tests. Quality of growth, earliness of flowering and fruit development were better during the fall plantings for all treatments. The Ca(NO(,3))(,2) favored more vegetative growth on short internodes during the summer planting. Although a general …

Bioavailability Of Iron In Beef And Beef-Soybean Mixtures., Felipe Diez
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In-vivo and in-vitro studies were conducted to measure bioavailability of iron from beef and beef-soy mixtures. The effects of cooking temperature and method of cooking were investigated. Animals absorbed non-heme iron better than heme forms and utilized iron contained in beef-soy diets as efficiently as that contained in beef diets. Colorimetric iron values of 17.18, 6.0, and 9.02% were obtained in raw, broiled and microwaved beef samples, respectively. A similar trend was observed in beef-soy mixtures when analyzed raw (11.03), broiled (6.32) or microwaved (2.21). Iron contained in beef-soy flour mixtures was dialyzed in a larger proportion (16.60%) as compared …
Peasants, Capitalists And The State: Mexico's Changing Agricultural Policies And The "Hungarian Project", James W. Wessman
Peasants, Capitalists And The State: Mexico's Changing Agricultural Policies And The "Hungarian Project", James W. Wessman
Research Papers
In the twentieth century a distinctive relationship has existed between the Mexican state and the country's peasantry. Since the ejido was established as a legal person in the Mexican constitution of 1917, the state has taken the responsibility for directing the fortunes of those peasants who obtained usufruct rights over land in the agrarian reform which followed the Mexican Revolution. The policies which the Mexican state has pursued for the ejido have suffered severe problems, including peasant resistance, bureaucratic inefficiencies and corruption, entrepreneurial speculation, private landowners' interference and international market fluctuations, among others. During most of the twentieth century, however, …

Some Physical And Chemical Properties Of Pine Bark Growing Medium Used As An Evaluation Of Its Nutritional Status., Don Christy Wilkerson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Various physical and chemical analyses were conducted on southern pine bark. The results from these analyses were then examined in terms of their effect on the interpretation of substrate fertility. The drainage aeration and water holding capacity of pine bark was found to be suitable for use as a container medium. Also the determination of the pH, CEC, and "available" nutrient content of pine bark indicated acceptable levels for plant growth. However, all values were dependent on the method of analysis. In general, it was concluded that a complex relationship exists between the physical and chemical properties of pine bark. …

G80-489 Feeding The Beef Cow Herd--Part I Factors Affecting The Cow Nutrition Program, Richard J. Rasby, Ivan G. Rush
G80-489 Feeding The Beef Cow Herd--Part I Factors Affecting The Cow Nutrition Program, Richard J. Rasby, Ivan G. Rush
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Considerations for getting the most from your beef cow herd are covered in this NebGuide, including calving season, factors affecting nutrient requirements, cow rations and more.
Feed costs are the greatest expense in keeping a cow herd, and the nutrition program dictates reproductive performance. The ultimate goal for a cow/calf manager is to keep feed costs low, but still meet the nutrient requirements of the cow herd so reproductive performance is not impaired. Once these two factors are balanced, producers, through new genetics of added growth or milk production, can match increased weaning weight with the most economical feed resources …

Development And Evaluation Of Corn-Cowpea Mixtures As Protein Sources For Nigerian Infants., Enoch Nwankwo T Akobundu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The feasibility of producing a low cost, easy to use, and flatulence-free product from corn and cowpeas for Nigerian children was investigated. Cowpea slurry was naturally fermented for 48 hours at room temperature. The pH dropped from 6.38 to 4.20. In fermentation with the yeast, pichia guilliermondii Y-2075, for 72 hours at room temperature, the pH dropped to only 5.60. Soaking and wet milling resulted in nutrient losses. Drum drying of the product did not significantly reduce lysine levels, 90% being biologically available in most samples. Products with good biological value as measured by PER in excess of 2.0 were …

Effects Of Flooding Dates And Disposals Of Rice Straw On Crayfish, Procambarus Clarkii (Girard), Culture In Rice Field., Yew-Hu Chien
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Studies were conducted to determine the effects of flooding dates and different disposals of rice straw on crayfish culture in rice field. Nutritional composition of decayed rice straw, periphyton growth, and water quality were also determined. Eighteen earthen ponds were randomly assigned to six treatments in a two by three factorial arrangement: early flooding (20/Sept/1978), late flooding (15/Oct/78), and aerobic (baled), anaerobic (disked), partially aerobic (standing) decomposition of rice straw with three replications each. The average crayfish production in early-flooded ponds (1183 kg/ha) did not differ significantly from that in late-flooded ponds (1127 kg/ha). Significant differences (P < 0.05) in average crayfish production were found between standing ponds (1506 kg/ha) and disked ponds (803 kg/ha), and between baled ponds (1157 kg/ha) and disked ponds. The average crayfish production in standing ponds was not significantly higher than in baled ponds. von Bertalanffy's growth model revealed that all crayfish in early-flooded ponds attained an average maximum length (1(,00)) and Brody's growth coefficient (k) of 92.2 mm and 0.55, respectively, whereas all crayfish in late-flooded ponds had an 1(,00) and k of 82.7 mm and 0.09. Crayfish in disked ponds showed the poorest growth of all treatments. Late-flooded ponds had a higher population density than early flooded ponds. The population density was highest in baled ponds followed by standing and disked ponds. The harvestable crayfish size (total length > 75 mm) in …
G79-430 Oat Production In Nebraska (Revised March 1992), Russell Moomaw, Charles A. Shapiro
G79-430 Oat Production In Nebraska (Revised March 1992), Russell Moomaw, Charles A. Shapiro
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Information is provided for various oat production practices including seed selection, fertilizing, planting, weed control and harvest. Oats were among the first crops grown by pioneers who settled eastern Nebraska. As recently as 1950, Nebraska produced 2.7 million acres of oats. Acreage has declined steadily, however, and in 1990 there were just 300,000 acres. Oats are grown throughout the state, with the majority being in eastern Nebraska where the cool, moist climate provides for the best growth. The feed value of oats also favors its production in northeast Nebraska where swine, dairy cattle, and beef cattle production are heavy. An …
