Application Of Crawfish Chitosan As A Coagulant In Recovery Of Organic Compounds From Seafood Processing Wastes., Hong Kyoon No
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Millions of pounds of readily usable and renewable byproduct are discarded yearly from the rapidly expanding Louisiana crawfish processing industry. This investigation involved utilization of crawfish waste shell to produce the biopolymers chitin and chitosan, and to utilize chitosan as a coagulant and in ligand-exchange column technology for recovery of organic compounds from seafood processing discharge stickwater. Crawfish shell was found to be an excellent source of chitin (23.49% on a dry basis) and applicable physicochemical procedures for isolation of chitin from crawfish shell and its conversion to chitosan were developed. Particular attention was given to characterization of the physicochemical …

Field Evaluation And Genetic Analysis Of {\It Heliothis\/} Spp. Resistance In Advanced Lanthanum Cotton Strains., Stephen James Stringer
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Seventeen advanced La cotton breeding strains having Heliothis spp. resistance attributed to morphological characters and allelochemics were evaluated for field resistance and flowerbud gossypol content at Baton Rouge, LA. in 1982 and 1983. These experimental cottons averaged less than 50% of the Heliothis spp. larvae and feeding-damaged fruit of two cotton cultivars recommended for production in Louisiana. These strains also had at least 25% less feeding-damaged fruit and 15% fewer live Heliothis spp. larvae than two Heliothis spp. resistant cotton germplasm lines. Results suggested that high flowerbud gossypol pigment glandulosity, rather than flowerbud gossypol content per se, played an important …

G86-797 Causes Of Vaccination-Immunization Failures In Livestock, Duane Rice, E. Denis Erickson, Dale Grotelueschen
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide discusses reasons why vaccinations fail to provide immunity against disease, and how to prevent this from happening.
To comprehend the many reasons for vaccine failure, it is important to understand how animals and humans have the ability to resist infectious diseases. It is also important to know what a disease is and how it affects the animal.
According to Stedman's Dictionary, disease is an interruption, cessation or disorder of body functions, systems or organs. Diseases may be obvious even to the untrained eye, or detectable only by sophisticated testing procedures (subclinical disease). Serious irreversible damage may be …

Peri-Urban Agriculture In Western Washington: An Identification Of Factors Of Potential Influence To The Development Of Metropolitan Food Policy, William H. Gray
Peri-Urban Agriculture In Western Washington: An Identification Of Factors Of Potential Influence To The Development Of Metropolitan Food Policy, William H. Gray
Dissertations and Theses
Historically, agricultural policy has been developed at the national level, while land use decisions have been made at the municipal or county level. In primarily rural areas, the policy objectives of these domains are largely consistent: agricultural development. In urban areas, however, the food production objectives of national policy and the planning objectives of local government may be incongruent. This research uses the European construct of "peri-urban agriculture" as a framework in which to address the issues confronting both farm producers and metropolitan areas.
The principal hypothesis to be tested in this research is that farmer characteristics differ between peri-urban …

G84-702 Root And Soil Analayses For Nematodes In Corn, David S. Wysong, Eric D. Kerr
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide describes how to interpret laboratory results of samples submitted for nematode analysis and discusses ten species that are potentially damaging to corn.
Several kinds of plant parasitic nematodes (small, soil-inhabiting roundworms) are associated with root injury, poor plant color, stunted growth, and reduced grain yields in field corn. Symptoms caused by these pests are often confused with root rot diseases, nutritional deficiencies or climatic stresses. Special laboratory analyses are, therefore, necessary to determine if nematodes are the primary cause of reduced corn performance. Since corn growers may be unfamiliar with nematode diseases, the following discussion of laboratory reports …

Mean feed consumption per diet also decreased with increasing ISP levels as did the amount of copper consumed per bird. Although the mg copper consumed per bird decreased from diet I to diet IV, the …
Nitrification At The Rice Root., Chayong Nammuang
Nitrification At The Rice Root., Chayong Nammuang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Nitrification at the rice root was investigated. Nitrifiers were found in the rice rhizoplane, rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soils under flooded conditions. They were greater in the rhizoplane than in the rhizosphere soil and greatest at the heading stage of rice growth. Ammonium-sulfate or NaNO(,2) injected into the flooded soils with growing rice plants did not increase the activities of nitrifiers in the rice rhizoplane. Incubation of the flooded soil with (NH(,4))(,2)SO(,4) or NaNO(,2) did not increase the activities of NH(,4)('+)- or NO(,2)('-)-oxidizers in soils without rice. The (NH(,4))(,2)SO(,4) did not increase denitrifiers, but incubation with NaNO(,2) caused an early increase …
