Genotype X Environment Interaction For Growth And Reproductive Traits In Beef Cattle., Louis Munyakazi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Data on eight different two breed combinations of calves produced in two locations (Louisiana and Nebraska) were analyzed to determine the magnitude of genotype x location interactions for gestation length (GESTLEN), birth weight (BWT), pre-weaning average daily gain (ADG) and weaning weight (WWT). Sire breed (SB), sire/SB and cow breed (CB) interactions with location (LOC) were the primary sources of variation of interest in the analysis of variance. The SB x LOC interaction was significant for all traits whereas the CB x LOC interaction was important only for ADG. The sire/SB x LOC interaction accounted for a significant amount of …

Application Of Fuzzy Set Technique To Agricultural Planning, S Kumar, Narasingh Misra, B C Ghosh
IIMB Management Review
In India, agriculture remains the dominant sector of economic activity with 74 percent work force depending on it. But the share of income from agriculture sector is less than the employment in it. Also the menace of unemployment and food requirement is increasing with growing population. Hence , there is a great need for increasing production and net profit levels on one hand and employment generation on the other. Irrigation planning plays an .mportant role in increasing agricultural production, net benefit, employment generation etc. as only 32 percent of the total cultivated area is irrigated in our country. Irrigation Planning …
Genetic Variability And Population Structure Of Eastern White Pine In A Two Hectare Stand, Durham, New Hampshire, Petr R. Brym
Genetic Variability And Population Structure Of Eastern White Pine In A Two Hectare Stand, Durham, New Hampshire, Petr R. Brym
Doctoral Dissertations
The genetic structure of a two hectare stand of eastern white pine (Pinus strobus L.) was studied by relating foliar allozyme composition of individual trees to tree location and age. Using starch gel electrophoresis, the trees were found to have variants for six of the seven enzymes analyzed. Trees of similar age and with common allozymes were found in clusters, suggesting that genetic structure existed in the stand. The genetic structure may have originated during establishment of several seedlings from common parents when openings were created in the canopy. Knowing that a genetic structure, such as that observed in this …

Predicting Potassium Uptake By White Clover With A Mathematical Model And Assessment Of White Clover Phosphorus And Potassium Status With The Dris., Hubert Joseph Savoy Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Environmental concerns emphasize the requirement for diagnostic tools compatible with more intensively managed agricultural systems. Two recent approaches, the Barber-Cushman mechanistic model and the Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System (DRIS), appear to offer more accurate predictions of soil nutrient supply and more flexible means of assessing plant nutrient status, respectively, than conventional methods. The objectives of this research were to verify the aforementioned models for predicting K uptake and assessing P and K status of LA S-1 white clover. In growth chamber experiments, the Barber-Cushman model correctly predicted K uptake by plants for up to 21 days from Rita muck, …
Regulation Of Cortisol And Prolactin In Horses., Donald R. Colborn
Regulation Of Cortisol And Prolactin In Horses., Donald R. Colborn
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In Experiment I, stallion exposure to an estrous mare on d 2 caused cortisol and PRL concentrations to increase (P $$.05) on d 1, 3, 4, 5 or 6 when no exposure occurred. In Experiment II, cortisol concentrations increased (P $<$.05) within 10 min after sexual stimulation (SS), physical exercise (PE), restraint via a twitch (RT) and epinephrine administration (EA) but not during control bleedings. PRL concentrations increased (P $<$.05) following SS, PE and RT but not after EA or during control bleedings. In Experiment III, cortisol concentrations in geldings increased (P $<$.05) following EA, PE and RT but not following SS or control bleedings. PRL concentrations increased (P $<$.05) following PE and SS. In Experiment IV, sulpiride injection was used in stallions in an attempt to increase PRL concentrations. Prior to sulpiride treatment, concentrations of both cortisol and PRL increased (P $<$.05) by 40 to 80% in response to exercise; concentrations of LH and FSH also increased (P $<$.05) by approximately 10%. Sulpiride treatment stimulated (P $<$.05) daily PRL secretion by approximately 5-fold, and caused a decrease (P $<$.05) in daily FSH secretion whereas only isolated differences (P $<$.05) occurred between treatment groups for daily LH and cortisol secretion. At the end of treatment, there was no PRL response to exercise for stallions treated with sulpiride, but there was (P $<$.05) for control stallions; only control stallions exhibited a marginal cortisol response (P $<$.05) to exercise. The PRL response to TRH was increased (P $<$.05) 4-fold in stallions treated with sulpiride but was unchanged in control stallions. Sulpiride treatment did not affect (P $>$.05) the LH or FSH response to exogenous GnRH. We conclude that: (1) returning stallions to the site of a previous period of sexual excitement does not cause a memory-mediated rise in cortisol or prolactin; (2) cortisol and PRL are secreted rapidly in response to some but not all forms of physical and chemical stress in stallions and geldings; …$.05)>

G88-892 Mixing Quality Pig Feed (Revised July 1992), Duane Reese, Mike Brumm
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Pig feed quality problems and mixing recommendations are covered here. Feed ingredients represent over 60 percent of the total cost of farrow-finish pork production and 65-70 percent of the variable expenses. Attention to quality preparation, in addition to purchasing decisions, is a component of feed ingredient cost management. Errors in formulation, misuse of feed mixing equipment, use of poor quality feed ingredients or lack of a quality assurance program can have costly consequences.
