"The Valley Gravity Project Plan has been formulated to furnish an adequate and dependable irrigation water supply for fertile and productive area in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas, It would also provide drainage works, which would remove the threat of destruction of the economy of the area due to effects of a high water table and salt accumulations. The project works would permit generation of the maximum practicable amount of electrical energy which otherwise would be required to operate irrigation pumping plants. Other incidental benefits include fish and wildlife conservation, recreation and flood control."

Since the settlement of the state Utah's agriculture has been based primarily on irrigated farming. The major part of farm income and the livelihood of farmers and farm families comes from this type of farming. Also, Utah's hopes for agricultural expansion and development, the adding of new wealth, and the providing of employment for Utah rural people, lie in a further development of irrigation and irrigated farming. Range livestock and dry farming, when measured by income and employment of labor have been, and are likely to remain, minor enterprises when compared to irrigated farming. The fundamental purpose of this paper is to present the picture of early food economy among the Indians of the Plains. In order to accomplish this task the procedure has been to present: (1) a brief study of the tribal groups with special emphasis upon their early history and movements, followed by (2) a general picture of Plains food economy with regard to the sequence and tribal units. The foundation of progress in agriculture as in any other industry is research. Research has resulted in knowledge now daily applied in soil treatment, in irrigation practices, in dealing with insect pests, in breeding new varieties of plants, in animal improvement, in better farm practices, and in better land-use planning. Research undertaken by the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station has been outlined to solve specific problems facing Utah agriculture, among them the problems of irrigation, dry farming, range management and animal production.
