Wetland Manipulation In The Yalahau Region Of The Northern Maya Lowlands, Scott L. Fedick, Bethany A. Morrison, B. J. Andersen, S. Boucher, J. C. Acosta, Jennifer P. Mathews
Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research
Manipulation of wetlands for agricultural purposes by the ancient Maya of southern Mexico and Central America has been a subject of much research and debate since the 1970s. Evidence for wetland cultivation systems, in the form of drained or channelized fields, and raised planting platforms, has been restricted primarily to the southern Maya Lowlands. New research in the Yalahau region of Quintana Roo, Mexico, has recorded evidence for wetland manipulation in the far northern lowlands, in the form of rock alignments that apparently functioned to control water movement and soil accumulation in seasonally inundated areas. Nearby ancient settlements date primarily …

Ec00-1879 Sorghum Ergot In The Northern Great Plains, Jim Stack
Ec00-1879 Sorghum Ergot In The Northern Great Plains, Jim Stack
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Sorghum is grown throughout Nebraska on approximately 0.6 million acres of land. It is grown as a forage crop as well as a grain crop. There is no significant commercial seed production in Nebraska. Grain sorghum is used domestically as livestock feed, in ethanol production, and to a limited extent as a food crop.
Grain sorghum is also exported to several countries. All sorghum hybrids (grain and forage) are susceptible to ergot disease. Ergot is a disease that impacts sorghum production directly by infecting unfertilized flowers and preventing seed development. Ergot also impacts sorghum production indirectly. Affected fields with honeydew-covered …

American Alligator Nesting Ecology In Impounded Marsh Habitat, Louisiana., Steven Richard Reagan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The goal was to monitor a large number of female alligators over a 3-year period to obtain information on alligator nesting ecology. This dissertation, although designed to estimate annual nesting rates, provides additional meaningful information on methods of capture, tag retention rates, nest spacing patterns, segregation of size classes, nest site fidelity, the relationship between attendance and nest success, the effects of fire ants on alligator nest success, the relationship between hatchling alligators and their mother, and hatchling dispersal. Passive integrated transponder (PIT), monel web, and cranial mounted reflector tags were evaluated for marking and identifying alligators. Use of harmonic …
The Effects Of Dietary Fatty Acids And Non -Steroidal Anti -Inflammatory Drugs On Cyclooxygenase-2 Expression., Kyung-Hee Sohn
The Effects Of Dietary Fatty Acids And Non -Steroidal Anti -Inflammatory Drugs On Cyclooxygenase-2 Expression., Kyung-Hee Sohn
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Dietary n-3 fatty acids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) were shown to have cancer preventive and tumor regressive effects. Fatty acids and NSAIDs are substrate and inhibitors, respectively, of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), which is a key enzyme in the conversion of arachidonic acids to prostaglandins. Thus, the modulating effects of different types of dietary fatty acids and NSAIDs on the expression of COX-2 are studied here. Results show that both n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) inhibit Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced COX-2 expression and NF-kappaB activation in macrophages. Results from in vitro cell proliferation study indicate that growth of colon tumor cells …

Biological And Molecular Properties Of Sweet Potato Leaf Curl Virus., Pongtharin Lotrakul
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In 1994, a sweet potato sample showing leaf curl symptoms was collected from the field in Louisiana. When graft-inoculated, Ipomoea setosa reacted with mild upward leaf curling while I. aquatica reacted with a bright yellow mottle. The putative virus was transmitted by the sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci biotype B, and it was designated the United States isolate of Sweet potato leaf curl virus (SPLCV-US). Four independent Southern blot hybridizations using the DNA-A of different begomoviruses as probes confirmed the presence of begomovirus-like DNA in the infected plants. Fibrillar inclusions and granular aggregates of geminivirus-like particles were observed in the …

Source, Production And Export Of Dissolved Organic Carbon And Nitrogen, Jacqueline A. Aitkenhead-Peterson
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to quantify the major sources of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) in forest soils and ascertain mechanisms for their production and export to surface waters. To quantify the source of DOC we made use of the on-going litter manipulation study (DIRT) at Harvard Forest, Massachusetts. The organic horizon supplies 74% of DOC to bulk soil solution, 12% is supplied by leaf litter, and 13% from root exudate and decay. In plots with no inputs, DON concentrations were 9% higher than the control plots. When either roots or litter were excluded, DON concentrations …

Effects Of Dietary Phytase Supplementation On Growth, Nutrient Utilization, And Phytate Degradation In Channel Catfish, Ictalurus Punctatus., Weibing Yan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Phytase supplementation increases the availability of phosphorus in fish diets, and dietary protein utilization might be increased as well by lower phytate concentrations in phytase supplemented diets. Experiments were conducted to determine if weight gain; protein utilization; mineral retention; apparent dry matter, protein and mineral digestibility; and phytate degradation in the stomach of channel catfish fed an all-plant-protein diet could be improved by phytase supplementation. Seven diets were tested: a nutrient complete diet (TC) containing 5% fish meal and six all-plant-protein diets (T1--T6) that contained minimal levels of available phosphorus (0.16%; total P = 0.57%) and zinc (53.37 ppm), but …
Effects Of Cobalt-60 Gamma Irradiation On The Malaysian Prawn Macrobrachium Rosenbergii., Nyanti Lee
Effects Of Cobalt-60 Gamma Irradiation On The Malaysian Prawn Macrobrachium Rosenbergii., Nyanti Lee
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A major obstacle in culture of the Malaysian prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, is the complex social structure whereby a few large males dominate the population and reduce production. The goal of this work was to induce reproductive sterility by use of gamma radiation as a means to increase production. Of the 62 publications related to the use of gamma radiation in aquatic species published between 1938 and 1996, 66% did not indicate performance of dosimetry (dosage verification). Samples were not rotated during irradiation in 98% of these studies, which introduces considerable variation in dose. A dosimetric study in this dissertation found …

Diversity And Spatial Analysis Of Passerine Birds In Relation To Habitat Characteristics Of Woods Along The Northern Coast Of The Gulf Of Mexico., Jose Luis Alcantara
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
I studied the ecological diversity and spatial patterns of passerine birds during the springs of 1993, 1994, and 1995 at 3 stopover sites on the Chenier Plains of Louisiana and Texas. A "control" stand with dense understory vegetation and a "reduced" stand with modified understory were at each site. Data were collected on the structure and composition of vegetation and on the abundance and location of birds. Species richness, dominance, and diversity indices were computed for both vegetation and birds. Patterns of floristic impoverishment, greater dominance, and greater plant species diversity were found at the "reduced" stands. "Control" vegetation did …

The primary purpose of this study was to determine if addition of pumpkin pie spice to sweet potato puree would enhance consumer acceptance of sweet potato flavored yogurt. In Phase I, the effect of fat percentage, spice percentage, and addition of sweet potato pre-fermentation and post-fermentation on consumer acceptance was examined to determine the optimum treatment preferred by consumers and the effect of each treatment variable on the fermentation process. Phase II focused on the effect of storage periods of 7, 14, and 21 days on the organoleptic qualities and chemical composition of sweet potato. Analyses showed that the percentage …
The Effect Of Phytase On Nutrient Availability In Diets For Swine And Poultry., Sara Leann Johnston
The Effect Of Phytase On Nutrient Availability In Diets For Swine And Poultry., Sara Leann Johnston
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A series of experiments was conducted to determine the effect of increasing phytase coefficient of variation (CV) in chick diets, and to determine the effect of phytase addition on nutrient availability in diets for swine and poultry. The first experiment (EXP) simulated varying mix uniformity of phytase by alternately providing two diets with two different concentrations of microbial phytase (FTU). Increasing phytase CV had little effect on growth performance, whereas bone ash and breaking strength and Ca and P retention and excretion decreased only at the most extreme CV. These data suggest that a phytase CV of between 34 and …

Structure, Expression And Promoter Activity Of Ubiquitin Genes From Rice (Oryza Sativa L.)., Jianlin Wang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Successful transgenic plant production is largely dependent on the use of suitable promoters. In this study, we described isolation of rice ubiquitin genes, and demonstrated the potential utility of the rice ubiquitin promoters in plant transformation systems. Two polyubiquitin genes (RUBQ1 and RUBQ2) and two ubiquitin extension/fusion genes (RUBQ3 and RUBQ4) have been isolated from a rice genomic BAC library. DNA sequence data revealed that both RUBQ1 and RUBQ2 contained an open reading frame encoding a hexameric precursor ubiquitin and an intron immediate upstream of the initiation codon. The two ubiquitin fusion/extension genes RUBQ3 and RUBQ4 contained one repeat of …
Mapping Quantitative Trait Loci Controlling The Early Height Growth Of Longleaf Pine And Slash Pine., Changren Weng
Mapping Quantitative Trait Loci Controlling The Early Height Growth Of Longleaf Pine And Slash Pine., Changren Weng
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The delay in early height growth (EHG) known as the "grass stage" has been one important factor that limits the artificial regeneration of longleaf pine (Pinus palstris Mill.). Genetic improvement of the "grass stage" by interspecific hybridization between longleaf pine and slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm) followed by recurrent backcrosses aiming at the introgression of genes controlling the EHG from slash pine into longleaf pine may be a solution. Developing markers tightly linked to these genes and using them in backcross breeding programs may speed the process of the introgression. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were employed to map …
