Layers Of Biodiversity: Linking Urban Garden Plants And Arthropods, Chenyang Su Jan 2026

Layers Of Biodiversity: Linking Urban Garden Plants And Arthropods, Chenyang Su

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Diverse arthropods play essential roles in urban agriculture, while urban agriculture provides food and habitat that support arthropod biodiversity in fragmented urban landscapes. In urban community gardens, a form of urban agriculture characterized by allotment-style gardens, arthropods interact with plants and green space across multiple spatial scales of management, from individual gardeners' plots to broad urban landscapes. Understanding how plant communities in urban community gardens and urban landscapes shape arthropod biodiversity and interactions across scales can inform both agricultural management and urban biodiversity conservation. In this thesis, I conducted a series of field studies on ecologically and economically important arthropods …

Lucretius, Ovid, And Milton In Seventeenth-Century England: First Matter, Creation, And Food Of Angels, Conny M. Pfeifer

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Paradise Lost is a complex poem that not only contains John Milton’s rendition of the Genesis creation narrative and the Fall of humankind but also provides a voice for his unique theology. This dissertation argues that Milton’s creative use of the three disparate concepts of consuming and digesting knowledge, chaos, and the night sky allows him to respond to Lucretian atomism, to address questions regarding the mortality of the soul, and to navigate the scientific discoveries of the seventeenth century, especially the astronomical discoveries of Galileo Galilei. An examination of digestion, chaos, and night helps shed light on Milton’s unique …

Molecular Diffusion In Chemically Amplified Resists For Euv Lithography, Eshan Dilina Thilakarathna Jan 2026

Molecular Diffusion In Chemically Amplified Resists For Euv Lithography, Eshan Dilina Thilakarathna

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Photolithography is a critical manufacturing step in high-volume manufacturing (HVM) of semiconductor devices, where a photoresist layer is used to transfer nanoscale patterns onto the underlying stack materials. As the microelectronics industry continues to move toward smaller node sizes, driven by Moore's Law. As a result, the tolerances for photoresist performance have become increasingly demanding, which necessitates simultaneous improvements in resolution, defectivity, and roughness. At advanced nodes, these performance limitations are governed by the fundamental stochastic nature of the photochemical processes occurring within the resist film itself, rather than the optical or tool-level constraints. Photon shot noise, the statistical distribution …

Lifting The Political Fog: People, Power, And Antislavery Politics In Upstate New York, 1848-1861, Nicholas Thony

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

This work details the ascendance of the political antislavery movement in upstate New York, focusing on the roles a diverse array of actors played in constructing an unlikely Republican coalition of conservatives, reformers, black New Yorkers, nativists, prohibitionists, and abolitionists in the years preceding the Civil War. In weaving together the parallel and inextricable stories of powerful newspaperman Thurlow Weed, female reformers like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and black communities across the state, I argue the success of the political antislavery movement resulted from their combined efforts. Thurlow Weed was one of the most important politicians of …

Rebooting Administrative Enforcement For The Information Economy, Nina-Simone Edwards Jan 2026

Rebooting Administrative Enforcement For The Information Economy, Nina-Simone Edwards

Library Scholarship

This concept paper considers how to strengthen the enforcement of public mandates to deter harmful practices and business models. The paper offers principles for reinvigorated enforcement such as enhanced visibility, the increased use of design as a remedial lever, and personal responsibility for responsible individuals, not only the corporations that employ them.

To advance these principles, we call for new or amended laws that require companies to document how policy becomes code, grant agencies authority to order design changes to products and services, create pathways for charging responsible individuals, and cabin some forms of prosecutorial discretion. We would support these …

Legitimacy And Accountability In The Information-Era Administrative State, Nina-Simone Edwards Jan 2026

Legitimacy And Accountability In The Information-Era Administrative State, Nina-Simone Edwards

Library Scholarship

The current assault on administrative institutions and the rapid influx of automated “solutions” have exacerbated the problems of a system that was already buckling under the strains of functional opacity, technical opacity, unequal access and influence, process proliferation and paralysis, and inaction. An overarching reason for the legitimacy and accountability challenges confronting the administrative state is a paradigm for administrative legitimacy and accountability that is court-centered and no longer fit for purpose.

In this concept paper, we describe two core requirements of legitimacy and accountability–which, as we will explain, are interdependent concepts–and then articulate three component requirements–transparency and demystification, care …

Quantum Mechanics As A Framework For Data Assimilation And Its Application To Atmospheric Parameterization, David Freeman Jan 2026

Quantum Mechanics As A Framework For Data Assimilation And Its Application To Atmospheric Parameterization, David Freeman

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Quantum mechanics, as a mathematical system, can be understood as a generalization of classical probability theory. Quantum Mechanical Data Assimilation (QMDA) is a method in which classical dynamical systems are embedded into a quantum mechanical setting, with an associated data assimilation scheme leveraging the operator algebraic setting. In this dissertation, the algebraic structure underlying the operator theoretic formulation of QMDA is discussed. A procedure for closure of dynamical systems based on QMDA, known as Quantum Mechanical Closure (QMCl), is then constructed, and the procedures for constructing the quantum embeddings and implementing QMCl in practice are laid out and implemented for …

Exploring The Academic Trajectories Of Transfer Students Enrolled In An Introduction To Proof Course And Their Self-Efficacy For Proving, Sundas Hussain Jan 2026

Exploring The Academic Trajectories Of Transfer Students Enrolled In An Introduction To Proof Course And Their Self-Efficacy For Proving, Sundas Hussain

Mathematics Dissertations

Transfer students entering proof-based mathematics courses face a double transition: they are adjusting to a new institution while simultaneously learning to construct mathematical proofs. Although transfer students have been widely studied in higher education and self-efficacy for proving has received increasing attention in mathematics education, little research has examined the intersection of these two areas. The purpose of this study was to better understand how transfer students’ academic trajectories shape their self-efficacy for proving. This multiple case study examined twelve transfer students enrolled in an Introduction to Proofs (ITP) course, using Bandura's (1997) four sources of self-efficacy as the …

Targeting Nuclear Receptors In Muscular Dystrophies And Regenerative Myogenesis, Eira Mann, Hoang Vu, Vihang A Narkar, Yu Liu Jan 2026

Targeting Nuclear Receptors In Muscular Dystrophies And Regenerative Myogenesis, Eira Mann, Hoang Vu, Vihang A Narkar, Yu Liu

The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine

Skeletal muscle is a highly plastic tissue with a robust capacity for regeneration, largely driven by resident satellite cells. Muscular dystrophies comprise a heterogeneous group of inherited disorders characterized by progressive muscle degeneration, chronic inflammation, and impaired regenerative capacity. Despite well-defined genetic etiologies, effective disease-modifying therapies for these disorders, as well as many acquired myopathies, remain limited. Emerging evidence identifies nuclear receptors (NRs) as key regulators of skeletal muscle homeostasis, integrating hormonal, metabolic, and environmental signals to control transcriptional programs governing mitochondrial function, metabolism, inflammation, and myogenesis. In this review, we summarize the diverse roles and mechanisms of action of …

The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have transformed the treatment landscape across a broad range of malignancies by restoring antitumor immunity through blockade of key inhibitory immune pathways, including programmed death receptor-1 (PD-1), programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1), and cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen-4 (CTLA-4). Yet the same widespread immune activation that drives their therapeutic benefit renders patients susceptible to immune-related adverse events (irAEs). Among these cardiovascular toxicities have emerged as a particularly critical concern, drawing growing attention within the evolving field of cardio-oncology. ICI-associated cardiotoxicity encompasses a broad clinical spectrum, ranging from myocarditis and pericarditis to arrhythmias, heart failure, and vascular complications. Of these, …

Learning About Land Through Indigenous Storywork, Critical Information Literacy, And Archival Research At The Northern Shores Storywork Project Site, Kel Sassi

Journal Articles

This article takes a critical approach to an Information Literacy and Leadership Institute (Institute) for Upper Peninsula K-12 educators with the goal of coming to terms with the dispossession of Indigenous peoples in the region. Participants learned about critical information literacy in relation to archival materials about settler colonization and resource extraction and created curriculum materials for their classrooms. Facilitators designed institute activities with Archibald’s Indigenous Storywork principles in mind and analyzed the outcomes through this framework. The focus on land was reflected in teacher materials, but could be integrated more deeply in future institutes.
