Rapid Electrochemical Biosensor With Enhanced Accuracy And Repeatability Using Pyrene Nhs Ester Modified 3d Graphene Electrodes, S. Nazir, D. Jenkins, G. Pan

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

A consistent and reproducible chemical modification of the transducer interface is essential to ensure effectiveimmobilization of bioreceptors, thereby improving the sensitivity and reproducibility of biosensors. Althoughnotable progress has been made in fabricating graphene-based biosensors, the effects of surface biofunctionalization on sensing performance remain not fully understood. This study shows that combining threedimensional (3D) graphene foam electrodes with a straightforward, single-step surface biofunctionalizationmethod is key to enhancing the performance of graphene-based biosensors. Specifically, it presents a single-stepapproach to functionalize the 3D graphene foam (Gii-Sens) with 1-pyrenebutyric acid N-hydroxysuccinimideester (Pyrene-NHS ester). Electrochemical techniques, including cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulsevoltammetry (DPV), confirmed …

Heat Transfer From A Partially Buried Circular Cylinder In Oscillatory Flow, H. Thomas, R. Stuhlmeier, A. G.L. Borthwick, S. Michele

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

With the growing abundance of man-made cylindrical structures located on or close to the seabed, it is important to be able to assess their potential environmental impact. Herein, a model is presented of the viscous-thermal boundary layer in the vicinity of a circular cylinder resting on, or partially buried in, an otherwise flat seabed. To model the influence of wave-induced motions near such a cylinder, we assume oscillatory flow in which the water particle displacements are small with respect to the cylinder radius. A perturbation expansion is utilised to derive solutions of the boundary layer equations, leading to analytical solutions …

Low-income communities in disaster-prone regions face persistent challenges in translating post-disaster recovery investments into sustained resilience, as they navigate trade-offs among engineering objectives, policy constraints, and evolving socio-economic needs. Despite the widespread adoption of Build Back Better (BBB) principles, evidence on the long-term sustainability of outcomes remains limited, particularly in low- and lower-middle-income contexts. This study examines the sustainability of BBB outcomes in two Indonesian case studies: Banda Aceh (approximately 18 years after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami) and Central Sulawesi (approximately 4 years after the 2018 earthquake, liquefaction, and tsunami). Drawing on structured housing assessments, household surveys, semi-structured interviews, …

3d-Vit-Unet: 3d Vision Transformer Based Unet-Like Model For Volumetric Brain Tumor Segmentation, Sikandar Afridi, Atif Jan, Muhammad Abeer Irfan, Muhammad Irfan Khattak, Taimur Ahmed Khan

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Accurate volumetric segmentation of 3D medical imaging modalities is critical for therapy planning and clinical diagnosis, particularly for brain tumor delineation. Traditional convolutional neural network (CNN)-based architectures face challenges while capturing global contextual information and modeling long-range dependencies in complex 3D volumetric data, limiting their segmentation performance. Transformer-based models have emerged as promising alternatives to CNNs for such tasks, addressing their limitations in capturing global spatial dependencies. We propose 3D-ViT-UNet, a novel U-shaped vision transformer (ViT)-based encoder-decoder architecture for end-to-end volumetric brain tumor segmentation. The model employs 3D Window Multi-Head Self-Attention (3D-W-MSA) to capture local features and a 3D Dilated-Window …

Video-Dprp: A Differentially Private Approach For Visual Privacy-Preserving Video Human Activity Recognition, Allassan Tchangmena A. Nken, Susan Mckeever, Peter Corcoran, Ihsan Ullah

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Considerable effort has been made in privacy-preserving video human activity recognition (HAR). Two primary approaches to ensure privacy preservation in Video HAR are differential privacy (DP) and visual privacy. Techniques enforcing DP during training provide strong theoretical privacy guarantees but offer limited capabilities for visual privacy assessment. Conversely, methods such as low-resolution transformations, data obfuscation and adversarial networks, emphasize visual privacy but lack clear theoretical privacy assurances. In this work, we focus on two main objectives: (1) leveraging DP properties to develop a model-free approach for visual privacy in videos and (2) evaluating our proposed technique using both differential privacy …

Extended-Stability Runge–Kutta Solvers For Neural Ode: Faster, More Stable Training With Predictable Compute, Gavin Lee Goodship, Stephen O’Sullivan, Luis Miralles-Pechuán Jan 2026

Extended-Stability Runge–Kutta Solvers For Neural Ode: Faster, More Stable Training With Predictable Compute, Gavin Lee Goodship, Stephen O’Sullivan, Luis Miralles-Pechuán

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Neural ordinary differential equations provide a principled continuous depth formulation, yet their practical use is often limited by slow, numerically fragile, and computationally expensive training caused by the weaknesses of standard ODEs solvers. We introduce extended stability Runge Kutta methods, which are explicit fixed step solvers designed to remain stable at much larger step sizes than classical schemes such as RK4 or adaptive methods such as Dormand Prince. By enlarging the stability region of the real axis, these solvers cross the integration horizon with far fewer steps, providing deterministic computation, greatly reduced function evaluation cost, and smoother optimization dynamics. Across …

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

In this study, Fe₃O₄/kaolinite and ε-Fe₂O₃/kaolinite nanocomposites were synthesized using apricot kernel extract as a green reductant. The prepared nanocomposites were characterized and evaluated for their adsorption efficiency in removing methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. The synthesis was carried out at 80 °C using iron chloride precursors (FeCl₃·4 H₂O and FeCl₂·6 H₂O) and kaolinite. The nanocomposite physicochemical characterization (X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry) confirmed the incorporation of crystalline Fe₃O₄ and ε-Fe₂O₃ structures in the kaolinite matrix (particle sizes from 30 to 70 nm). Adsorption experiments showed that 4 mg …

Simulation Of Ion Migration In Perovskite Solar Cells At Elevated Temperature And Voltage Levels, Ali Hajjiah, Nima E. Gorji

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

A coupled modeling approach based on Sah-Noyce-Shockley theory has been developed to simulate the ion migration in perovskite solar cells under elevated temperature and bias levels. The model considers the migration of cations (MA+) and anions (I−) across the structure of a MAPbI3 solar cell (TiO2/Perovskite/Spiro) demonstrating how at elevated temperature and applied voltage levels, the ion can migrate with different speed and the ion concentration profiles can influence the device performance parameters. Results reveal that low-energy ions migrate rapidly toward the interfaces under forward or reverse bias, with cation concentrations reaching ∼10 …

A Simplified Computational Fluid Dynamics Investigation Of Internal Duct As A Passive Aerodynamic Solution For Electric Trucks, Omar K. Omar, Ahmad Abu Shanab, Mohammad Tarawneh, Sara Hawarneh, Dr Hani Alkhatib

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Aerodynamic drag is a dominant factor affecting the efficiency and driving range of electric trucks, especially at high speeds. Although previous studies have mainly focused on external drag-reduction devices, internal airflow control strategies such as integrated ducts have received limited attention. This study addresses that gap by analyzing how placing an internal duct in the truck body affects drag and power efficiency. A simplified two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach was employed using ANSYS Fluent to evaluate and compare a baseline truck model and a modified configuration featuring a central internal duct. The simulations assessed the drag coefficient, drag force, …

Conformationally Locked Bodipy Donor–Acceptor Dyads: Charge Separation And Recombination Across A [2.2.2]Bicyclooctane Spacer, Metodej Dvoracek, Yanran Wu, Greta Sambucari, Craig Newman, Brendan Twamley, Mathias O. Senge, Jianzhang Zhao, Mariangela Di Donato, Mikhail A. Filatov

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Controlling the excited-state dynamics of charge-separated (CS) states in donor–acceptor (D–A) systems is challenging due to geometry changes from intramolecular rotations and vibrations. A key question is how molecular geometry governs the formation, stability, and recombination of CS states, and whether these processes can be decoupled from spin-related transitions such as intersystem crossing (ISC). Here, we investigate a rigid design strategy where BODIPY and anthracene chromophores are fused to a bicyclo[2.2.2]octane scaffold, fixing the D–A geometry and eliminating conformational flexibility. This setup enables direct evaluation of how geometric restriction affects charge-transfer dynamics. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy shows efficient charge separation …
