Beyond Parametric Adaptation: Periodic Redesign For Reaction Wheel Degradation In Precision Pointing Cubesats, Bruno Ingrao Aug 2026

Beyond Parametric Adaptation: Periodic Redesign For Reaction Wheel Degradation In Precision Pointing Cubesats, Bruno Ingrao

Small Satellite Conference

CubeSat missions increasingly require sustained science-grade precision pointing over long durations. Although sub-arcsecond line-of-sight (LoS) stability is achievable, maintaining this performance is challenged by nonlinear, speed-dependent, and time-varying reaction wheel behavior. As actuator degradation progresses from beginning-of-life (BOL) to end-of-life (EOL), model-plant mismatch can lead to significant pointing degradation and potential loss of mission capability. This work investigates the limitations of fixed-gain and parametric adaptive control under degraded actuator conditions and proposes a periodic identification and controller redesign framework. The approach detects persistent model mismatch using innovation-based consistency and performance metrics, triggers on-orbit identification, and updates the actuator model using …

Trustless Cross-Chain Derivation Of Ipfs Content Identifiers Via Zero-Knowledge Proofs, Ryley Ohlsen, Lindsay Gilbert, Matthew Etre Aug 2026

Trustless Cross-Chain Derivation Of Ipfs Content Identifiers Via Zero-Knowledge Proofs, Ryley Ohlsen, Lindsay Gilbert, Matthew Etre

Defensive Publications Series

A method by which an application on one EVM-compatible blockchain can obtain a cryptographically-verified IPFS content identifier (CID) for content whose canonical bytes live on a different EVM-compatible blockchain (or are stored compressed on any chain), without relying on an oracle, a governance-managed attestation, or a trusted relayer. A zero-knowledge proof of correct execution of an on-chain-IPFS-importer computation (see companion disclosure, “On-Chain Reconstruction of IPFS Content Identifiers from EVM-Resident Content-Addressed Data”) is generated off-chain and verified on-chain in constant time, regardless of the size of the underlying content.

Book Review: Judicial Originalism As A Byproduct Of An Overly Difficult Amendment Process: Jill Lepore's We The People, Charles Britton Aug 2026

Book Review: Judicial Originalism As A Byproduct Of An Overly Difficult Amendment Process: Jill Lepore's We The People, Charles Britton

ConLawNOW

This essay reviews the book by Jill Lepore, We the People: A History of the U.S. Constitution, winner of the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for history.  It explains how Lepore examines the history of constitutional amendment—both successes and failures—to argue that frequent amendment was the democratic intent of the Framers. And shows how this amendment philosophy contradicts the originalism of the current Supreme Court.

Framework For Design, Modelling, And Qualification Of Phase Change Material Heat Sinks For Small Satellites, Daniel Kichma Aug 2026

Framework For Design, Modelling, And Qualification Of Phase Change Material Heat Sinks For Small Satellites, Daniel Kichma

Small Satellite Conference

The increasing use of high-power hardware in small satellites presents a critical thermal management challenge. Phase Change Material (PCM) heat sinks provide passive thermal control for transient heat loads by storing thermal energy as latent heat during melting, maintaining near-constant temperatures. This creates a thermal buffer that lowers peak heat fluxes and reduces the required radiative surface area. A PCM heatsink was required for thermal control of a payload on an upcoming mission at the Space Flight Laboratory (SFL). This motivated the development of in-house PCM capabilities to enable mission-specific designs at lower cost and shorter schedules. This paper presents …

Radma: Resource-Aware, Dynamic Deployment Of Ml Architectures On An Edge Tpu In Space, Robert Rathert Aug 2026

Radma: Resource-Aware, Dynamic Deployment Of Ml Architectures On An Edge Tpu In Space, Robert Rathert

Small Satellite Conference

As the number of Space Vehicles (SVs) orbiting Earth grows, downlink bitrate bottlenecks necessitate a shift to Orbital Edge Computing (OEC). Size, Weight, and Power, and Cost (SWaP-C) limit onboard Machine Learning (ML) autonomy, and State-of-the-Art (SotA) systems deploy static ML models that do not adapt to dynamic orbit conditions. This work proposes and evaluates RADMA, a resource-aware framework that selects Neural Network (NN) models in response to changing latency and energy constraints. We quantify the performance of RADMA on an open-hardware picosatellite payload that hosts a Google Coral Edge Tensor Processing Unit (TPU). Orbit simulation and modeling predict processing …

Validated Lie Group Variational Integrator-Based Simulator For Passive Magnetic Attitude Control Of The Gasrats Cubesat, Truman T. Abbe Aug 2026

Validated Lie Group Variational Integrator-Based Simulator For Passive Magnetic Attitude Control Of The Gasrats Cubesat, Truman T. Abbe

Small Satellite Conference

Passive magnetic attitude control (PMAC) systems are selected for integration in CubeSat designs on account of their simplicity and lack of power consumption. These systems function by simultaneously dissipating a satellite’s rotational kinetic energy as heat and orienting it according to the Earth’s magnetic field. This process is critical for establishing steady-state attitude, a stable rotational state required for conducting mission operations and enabling downlink to ground stations. Comprehensive attitude simulations are necessary for confirming the reliability of a PMAC system to provide timely attitude convergence for a wide range of deployment velocities and orientations. An attitude damping phase precedes …

On-Chain Reconstruction Of Ipfs Content Identifiers From Evm-Resident Content-Addressed Data, Ryley Ohlsen, Lindsay Gilbert, Mathew Etre Aug 2026

On-Chain Reconstruction Of Ipfs Content Identifiers From Evm-Resident Content-Addressed Data, Ryley Ohlsen, Lindsay Gilbert, Mathew Etre

Defensive Publications Series

A method for computing, entirely within an EVM-compatible smart contract, the IPFS content identifier (CID) that corresponds to data already stored on-chain in a content-addressed form. The method reconstructs canonical IPFS UnixFS / dag-pb DAG structures from on-chain bytes under a fixed import profile and derives a CIDv1 that is byte-identical to what an off-chain IPFS implementation would compute for the same content under the same profile — without any off-chain computation, oracle, or trusted party.

Exchange-Health Monitoring For Human–Ai Systems: A Technical Description, Christopher P. Horrocks Aug 2026

Exchange-Health Monitoring For Human–Ai Systems: A Technical Description, Christopher P. Horrocks

Defensive Publications Series

Current safety mechanisms for general-purpose AI systems classify individual messages against categories of prohibited content. A distinct class of failures -- sycophantic drift, dependency formation, deployer-aligned output shaping -- develops across exchanges rather than within them and has no recognizable topic. Experimental evidence indicates that participants in such exchanges cannot reliably detect these failures, because the interaction itself shifts the evaluative baseline against which degradation would be judged. This document describes a two-tier, locally hosted monitoring architecture that reads the exchange from outside it. The architecture comprises a session reader (real-time triage of single sessions) and a trajectory reader (scheduled …

Defensive Publications Series

AWH‑Ω4.0 is a builder‑ready, research‑mode atmospheric water engine designed for hyper‑arid climates (3–15% RH). It uses metal–organic framework (MOF) sorbents (MOF‑303, MOF‑801, and future composites) to adsorb water vapor from extremely dry air, then regenerates the sorbent using solar thermal energy and a thermal battery, routing desorbed vapor through a closed condenser loop to produce liquid water.

The system is explicitly engineered as an open‑hardware research platform, not a commercial product. It defines:

  • Full geometry and dimensions for sorbent cartridges, intake, condenser, and thermal subsystems.

  • Exact MOF mass per cartridge and structured contactors to minimize pressure drop.

  • Nighttime adsorption / …
