Human–wildlife conservation requires understanding both ecological processes and human behavior. In this talk, I discuss work from my PhD, Social Ecological Practice Theory, and demonstrate its application through two applied case studies: human–carnivore interactions in Botswana and my current work as Director of the University of California, Berkeley’s California Wolf Project. Together, these examples illustrate how integrating social and ecological perspectives can inform more effective and durable conservation strategies.

Türkiye's 2053 net-zero emissions target and the critical role of the manufacturing sector in this process necessitate an urgent examination of the financial impacts of circular economy (CE) practices. This study provides an exploratory analysis of the relationship between environmental burden and financial performance using 2023 data from 26 manufacturing companies in Borsa Istanbul. Given the difficulty of measuring holistic circularity at the company level, this study operationalizes the environmental dimension of circular economy performance using selected environmental burden indicators, including energy and water consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste generation. “Whenever You Are Using Media, You Should Always Have A Purpose”: A Study Of Chinese Immigrant Mothers’ Media Practices, Xiaoning Gui, Daniel G. Krutka

This qualitative study explores how eleven Mandarin-speaking Chinese immigrant mothers of young children in a southwestern U.S. city navigate and mediate media in their households. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Findings show mothers balance media’s educational affordances with concerns about health and age-appropriate content, employing gatekeeping, time limits, and purposeful sharing. Mothers described children as learners, co-learners, and cultural connectors, sometimes reversing mediation by teaching mothers about U.S. media norms. Interpreted through a lens of Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy while also drawing on Confucian concepts, results underscore the need for early childhood educators to honor immigrant families’ practices while fostering …

Background: Sleep disturbances impact cognition and physiology. While individual essential oils are documented, a gap remains in how multi-component blends can target multiple pathways. This study evaluated a blended essential oil (BEO) systematically guided by Thai Traditional medicine (TTM) principles to balance the "Wind" element (Tard Lom) alongside modern neurobiological validation.

Methods: A one-group pretest–posttest quasi-experimental study was conducted in adults (aged ≥ 20 years, n = 38) with sleep disturbances (PSQI > 5). Hurricane Andrew was a historic Category 5 storm that made landfall in southern Florida on the morning of 24 August 1992. Andrew’s landfall brought massive destruction, with entire neighborhoods in the city of Homestead, Florida destroyed. There were 250,000 people left homeless in the US over its entire track, and cost US$25 billion in damage, the costliest hurricane in United States history up to that point. A synoptic analysis was completed to study the tropical and subsequent extratropical phases of this destructive storm. Socioemotional learning (SEL) is linked to a broad range of child outcomes, with income playing an important role in child SEL, yet most work has compared high- and low-income children yielding less understanding of variability in risk and protective factors within low-income families and communities. Building upon theories in the positive youth development literature and public health frameworks exploring social determinants of health, this study explored the role of family problem-solving, neighborhood social cohesion, and neighborhood resources in understanding child SEL within 1097 low-income families of 3- to 5-year-old children who participated in the National Survey of Children’s Health. The hospitality industry faces a persistent skills gap as graduates enter the workforce with limited preparation in the adaptive, operational, and AI-enabled competencies modern employers require (Jackson, 2013; Sigala, 2018). Cooperative education offers a structured response, yet many programs default to a single internship that leaves the integration of theory and practice to chance. This report presents an undergraduate scaffolded cooperative education framework developed at a U.S. hospitality business school that sequences two foundation courses, six concurrent work-integrated courses, and a capstone digital portfolio across a two-year arc. Among people 25 or older in the United States in 2022, just 21% of individuals with a disability had earned a bachelor’s degree or higher, while 38% of individuals without a disability had earned a bachelor’s degree or higher. Previous research has identified a variety of barriers that students with disabilities may face as they pursue postsecondary education. The purpose of this study was to examine barriers students with disabilities (SWDs) face once they arrive at college in order to investigate how higher education may be made more accessible. Picophytoplankton are a group of photosynthetic, unicellular organisms, making them key primary producers in aquatic ecosystems. These cells numerically dominate in oceans and lakes where picophytoplankton communities contain phenotypic subpopulations that correspond to biogeographic patterns. In rivers, however, such community dynamics are less studied. We examined the phenotypic subpopulations of picophytoplankton in two converging urban river environments of Portland, Oregon (USA): the Columbia and the Willamette Rivers. From September 2022 through July 2023, we took roughly bi-weekly surface water samples and used multi-laser flow cytometry to distinguish between photosynthetic cells based on their size and pigment fluorescence. This study examined the effect of different types of ankle braces (Ankle Stabilizing Orthosis (ASO) vs. T2 Active Ankle(T2)) when worn unilaterally (UNI), bilaterally (BI), and with no brace worn (UB) on lower extremity kinematics and kinetics during a vertical jump and agility test. Twenty-two competitive volleyball players completed both a vertical jump test and agility T-test under five bracing conditions. Vertical jump height (VJH), ankle dorsiflexion (ADF), ankle plantarflexion (APF), knee flexion (KF), hip flexion (HF), vertical ground reaction force (vGRF), and vertical impulse were measured during the vertical jump test, while time to completion was measured for the …

This qualitative study examines how six college and university presidents describe the contemporary presidency in their own words, offering a personal complement to existing research that often emphasizes governance, organizational structures, or survey data. Through in‑depth interviews conducted in 2025, presidents from community colleges, regional public universities, and a private liberal arts college reflected on their transitions into the role, leadership philosophies, institutional challenges, and the legacies they hope to leave. Their experiences reveal strikingly consistent themes across institutional types. Participants emphasized that “nothing fully prepares someone for becoming the president,” noting the profound shift in responsibility that accompanies the …

People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice

Individuals experience several changes in their lives, with one of the most impactful being leaving home to attend college. It is no surprise that college-age students need mental health support, especially in times of adjustment. To address this adjustment, animal-assisted interventions (AAI) have recently gained substantial attention. In this study, college and university departments that help students transition to higher education were surveyed (N = 59) and interviewed (N = 6) to understand how AAI are utilized. Results indicate that AAI have potential to ease students’ higher education transition, though institutions must establish an outline that states the benefits of …

Shrinkage Of Jupiter's Great Red Spot, Richard W. Schmude Jr.

This report summarizes changes in Jupiter's Great Red Spot (GRS) on the multi-decade time scale.  The mean shrinkage rates for 1960-2016 are 0.21 degrees/year (east-west) and 0.52 degrees/year (north-south).  The east-west shrinkage rate is much higher than the corresponding value for Oval BA.  Between 1878 and 2026, the GRS area shrunk by over a factor of four with a mean annual shrinkage rate of 1.0 %.  The GRS quotient (east-west length in degrees longitude divided by north-south length in degrees latitude) has decreased.  This is consistent with the GRS becoming more circular with time.  This is different than Oval BA, …
