Nanoscale Analysis Of Ssb-Reco Interplay In Ssb Interaction With The Target, Shivkumar Sharma Irukuvajjula, Shaun Filliaux, Yuri L. Lyubchenko Jan 2026

Nanoscale Analysis Of Ssb-Reco Interplay In Ssb Interaction With The Target, Shivkumar Sharma Irukuvajjula, Shaun Filliaux, Yuri L. Lyubchenko

Journal Articles: Pharmaceutical Sciences

Single-stranded DNA-binding protein (SSB) coats single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) and recruits downstream factors, yet this same coating must be cleared for SSB-interacting proteins to bind. RecA is a central protein in homologous recombination, which requires SSB-free ssDNA to load during the process. RecO, a recombination mediator protein, is thought to regulate this handoff, but it has not been shown directly that RecO drives the release of full-length, ssDNA-bound SSB. Using atomic force microscopy, we show that RecO actively displaces full-length wild-type SSB from a defined ssDNA substrate, reducing occupancy from 67% to 29%. Displacement efficiency decreases after deleting the C-terminal tip …

The Ability To Resist The Expected Impairing Effects Of Alcohol In Heavy And Light Drinkers, Grace Tomaszewski Jan 2026

The Ability To Resist The Expected Impairing Effects Of Alcohol In Heavy And Light Drinkers, Grace Tomaszewski

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Alcohol tolerance is defined as a diminished response to the drug owing to repeated alcohol exposures. However, drinkers can compensate for alcohol impairment, particularly when they expect to be impaired in the situation. However, the ability to compensate might depend on the behavior impaired by alcohol and the general tolerance already acquired by the drinker. This study tested the degree to which expecting alcohol impairment would reduce alcohol’s impairing effect on reaction time (RT) and fine motor control in those with heavy and light drinking histories. Light drinkers (n=26) and heavy drinkers (n=28) received a 0.65 g/kg alcohol and performed …

Age-Related Ultrastructural Differences In The Dorsal Cortex Of The Inferior Colliculus In The Fischer Brown Norway Rat, Kylee M. Tenney, Dakota Smallridge, Gillian Barach, Gurveer Singh, Erin Beskitt, Justine Busby, Syllissa Duncan, Alexa Wawrzyniak, Brenda Vega, Nick Tokar, Andrew Ohl, Jesse Young, Jeffrey Mellott

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The inferior colliculus is a nucleus in the auditory midbrain that plays an important role in sound and speech processing through how it encodes temporal precision. Temporal precision depends on the balance of inhibition and excitation within the IC. This balance degrades during aging. Age-related changes in synapses have been described in the lemniscal IC as a contributing factor for this imbalance. However, it is unknown if aging affects synapses throughout the non-lemniscal IC in a similar manner. We sought to determine this by examining the dorsal cortex of the IC. The ICd is a non-lemniscal nucleus that is well …

Michigan Tech Publications

Restoring large carnivores to human-dominated landscapes remains ecologically and socially contentious, though reintroduction may offer important benefits where coexistence is possible. Yet, efforts to reintroduce cougars (Puma concolor) and red wolves (Canis rufus) in the Eastern U.S. face major challenges, largely due to human-caused mortality and opposition. We employed the hazard acceptance model and structural equation modeling to investigate the socio-psychological drivers of public support for reintroduction. Survey data were collected from residents of the Eastern U.S. for cougars (n = 2665) and red wolves (n = 3825). For both species, support was positively associated with perceived personal and societal …

Equity And Justice In Water Pricing And The Effects On Water Distribution System Management, Brian Barkdoll Jan 2026

Equity And Justice In Water Pricing And The Effects On Water Distribution System Management, Brian Barkdoll

Michigan Tech Publications

Equity regarding access to potable water is paramount. Municipal Water Distribution Systems supply potable water to users and are essential to public health. To find the optimal price of water to maximize utility revenue and allow changes to the system components for capital and maintenance expenditures, network modeling was performed for 15 real MDWSs. A new power-law price-usage elasticity curve, entitled the Power Law Elasticity Function (PLEF), was used that allowed for various users, both high- and low-income, and a non-discretionary level of usage. It was found that: (1) the maximum profit was obtained when the price was approximately 0.8 …

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) within the tumor microenvironment highly contribute to cancer progression and poor prognosis. Recent findings introduce pirfenidone, a medication for pulmonary fibrosis, as a promising repurposed candidate for inhibiting CAFs. Moreover, photobiomodulation (PBM), or low-level laser therapy, has surfaced as a potential modality against cancer; however, its impact on CAFs is not thoroughly comprehended. The present study scrutinized the effects of PBM, pirfenidone, and PBM+pirfenidone on CAFs, and their consequent impact on cancer cells using the CAF-conditioned media. After treating CAFs with PBM at wavelengths 660 and 980 nm with/without PFD and then culturing cancer cells in the …

Qubit Lattice Algorithm Simulations Of The Scattering Of A Bounded Two Dimensional Electromagnetic Pulse From The Infinite Planar Dielectric Interface, Min Soe, George Vahala, Linda Vahala, Efstratios Koukoutsis, Abhay K. Ram, Kyriakos Hizanidis

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Qubit lattice algorithm (QLA) simulations are performed for a two-dimensional spatially bounded pulse propagating onto a plane interface between two dielectric slabs. QLA is an initial value scheme that consists of a sequence of unitary collision and streaming operators, with appropriate potential operators, that recover Maxwell equations in inhomogeneous dielectric media to the second order in the lattice discreteness. For the case of total internal reflection, there is transient energy transfer into the second medium due to the evanescent fields as the Poynting unit vector of the pulse is rotated from its incident to reflected direction. Because of the finite …

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Fault detection and diagnosis of three-phase inverter-fed motor drives is essential for ensuring system reliability, safety, and continuous operation in applications such as electric vehicles and industrial automation. This paper proposes a data-driven fault detection framework based on normalized current features and a lightweight bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) network which can be generalized to different motor power rating in the same controller system. A compact set of six time-domain features, consisting of the mean and root-mean-square (RMS) values of the phase currents, is extracted and normalized with respect to the average RMS value. This normalization effectively removes dependency on …

Dynamic Direct Voltage Control Under Maximum Torque Per Ampere For Interior Pmsms, Mohamad Alzayed, Hicham Chaoui, Alaref Elhaj

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A novel method for controlling the speed of interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs), known as the current-sensing-based dynamic direct voltage control method under the maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) concept, is introduced. This technique achieves precise tracking of machine velocity by determining the optimal combination of voltage amplitude and angle for each specific motor velocity and current/load condition. Unlike previous studies, this approach takes into account the transient model of the machine, resulting in improved accuracy during dynamic operating conditions compared with existing methods in the literature. Moreover, a comparative analysis is conducted involving different direct voltage MTPA speed …

Fault Tolerance Of Accelerated Asynchronous Fixed-Point Iterations On Flexible Computing Infrastructure, Evan Coleman, Masha Sosonkina Jan 2026

Fault Tolerance Of Accelerated Asynchronous Fixed-Point Iterations On Flexible Computing Infrastructure, Evan Coleman, Masha Sosonkina

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Asynchronous iterative methods tolerate straggling processors by allowing workers to proceed with stale data, but at a cost: the iterates become inconsistent, potentially degrading convergence. We investigate whether convergence accelerators such as Anderson acceleration compensate for this degradation. We experimentally study three fixed-point iterations: the Jacobi method for sparse linear systems, value iteration for the Bellman equation, and the Hartree–Fock self-consistent field (SCF) iteration. The experiments are conducted using a high-performance execution framework, Ray, which abstracts the complexity of distributed systems and enables code parallelization and fault injection with minimal changes.

We establish two main results. First, straggler tolerance is …
