Exploring Graduate Students’ Perspectives Of Clinical Supervision In Speech-Language Pathology: A Qualitative Study Of Facilitators And Barriers, Andrew J. Clare, Joyce Maring

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

This qualitative study explored second-year graduate students’ perceptions of clinical supervision practices in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP), focusing on how specific aspects of the supervisory approach were experienced by students as either barriers or facilitators to their learning during clinical practicum experiences. Twenty graduate students from a single SLP program, each with experience in at least seven clinical practica, participated in semi-structured interviews. An inductive thematic analysis approach was used to examine the patterns in the students’ experiences. Two mirrored sets of themes emerged, reflecting the dual importance of relational and pedagogical aspects of supervision. Facilitators included supportive relationships and effective …

Cmsi Note 25: Precluding The Powerful Enemy: A New Pla Concept For A Taiwan Conflict, Ryan D. Martinson Oct 2026

Cmsi Note 25: Precluding The Powerful Enemy: A New Pla Concept For A Taiwan Conflict, Ryan D. Martinson

CMSI Notes

Key Takeaways:

  • In recent years, the PLA has employed a new concept—“preclusion” (shezu)—that captures the two related missions of deterring and denying U.S. military intervention in a Taiwan conflict.
  • While the precise origin of the term is unknown, as early as 2019 it appeared in an internal PLA article written by a PLA Navy admiral with direct responsibility for commanding forces in a Taiwan campaign. This early use of the concept suggested that “deterrence” (慑) and “denial” (阻) were two steps in a three-step graduated PLA response to U.S. military intervention.
  • Since the intensification of PLA operations around Taiwan that …

Transforming Preservice Teachers’ Messaging Through Math Narratives In Mixed-Reality Simulations, Liza Bondurant, Darolyn Flaggs, Belinda Edwards

Publications

Beliefs about mathematics shape students' identities, engagement, and opportunities to learn. Unproductive math narratives (MNs) can limit students' participation and persistence. This poster reports on a multi-institutional project examining how structured preparation and mixed-reality simulation (MRS) can support preservice secondary mathematics teachers (PSTs) in communicating productive MNs. RQ: How does engaging in preparation and MRSs influence PSTs' self-efficacy and messaging related to the MNs of: (1) encouraging help seeking, (2) making mathematics relevant, and (3) affirming the value of mistakes?

Multimodal Microanalysis: Extending Professional Noticing Through Embodied Cognition, Diana L. Moss, Claudia Bertolone-Smith, Jonathan Troup, Liza Bondurant

Publications

Professional noticing frameworks have significantly shaped how mathematics educators attend to, interpret, and respond to student thinking. However, traditional approaches often privilege verbal and written forms of expression, potentially overlooking tacit and embodied dimensions of reasoning. In this methodological brief, we introduce multimodal microanalysis, an approach that integrates professional noticing, embodied cognition, and microanalytic methods to systematically examine gesture, gaze, posture, and material interaction alongside speech. Using a cognitive interview with a second-grade student reasoning about even and odd numbers, we illustrate how sequencing attention to embodied and verbal modes reveals dimensions of mathematical thinking that are often missed. This …

Publications

We investigate mathematics capital and its relationship with mathematics teaching and learning experiences, mathematics mindset, mathematics self-efficacy, cultural capital, and subjective social status. Survey data were collected from 927 undergraduate students in Fall 2024. Mathematics capital was modeled as a latent factor in our model with acceptable fit indices via structural equation modeling. The results of our model show that mathematics teaching and learning experiences and mathematics self-efficacy account for most of the variability in mathematics self-efficacy and mathematics teaching and learning experiences. Moreover, cultural capital and mathematics mindset are positively related to mathematics teaching and learning experiences. Overall, mathematics …

Equipping Church Leaders As Mediators: Implementing And Evaluating Conflict Mediation Training In A Multicultural Church, Komie T. Bumpers

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The social, political, ideological, and racial divides that lead to conflict and shape today's culture are the same issues that plague American evangelical churches. While faith traditions can bring people together, cultural issues can divide them. Despite the centrality of conflict in congregational life, many theological seminaries do not provide comprehensive conflict mediation training as a core component of pastoral and leadership formation, resulting in a deficit in preparedness. The purpose of this research was to develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive conflict mediation training program for multicultural church leaders that equips them to effectively navigate ongoing interpersonal, doctrinal, political, …

The Literacy Link: Connecting Parents Who Are Incarcerated With Their Young Children Through Reading Aloud, Mary Campbell Wood, Heidi Ungrodt, Pamela Wedig-Kirsch, Ronda Davis, Jacqueline Buck, Lindsay A Weymouth

Journal of Extension

Parental incarceration is consequential for children. Outreach strategies can maintain parent–child relationships during incarceration. The Literacy Link connects parents in jail and prison with their children through two strategies: a dialogic reading workshop and a recorded book reading program. Over 3 years, we implemented these strategies with parents in jails and prisons located in 12 counties. We surveyed parents and the caregivers with whom children live during their parents' incarceration. Parents reported improvements in attitudes and confidence related to reading aloud. Most parents and caregivers reported that these strategies provided a connection between parents and children during incarceration.

Lean Thinking Tools And Their Effect On Rural Faculty Motivation In Assessment, Bliss Adkison Oct 2026

Lean Thinking Tools And Their Effect On Rural Faculty Motivation In Assessment, Bliss Adkison

College of Education

Faculty engagement in academic program assessment remains difficult in rural higher education institutions because limited resources and multiple responsibilities can make assessment feel like an isolated compliance task. Grounded in self-determination theory, this explanatory sequential mixed-methods study examined whether faculty participation in a rapid improvement event (RIE) (lean thinking-based intervention) was associated with faculty members’ perceived enjoyment, effort, and competence in program assessment. Faculty from two rural institutions participated in a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest non-equivalent-groups design. Forty-seven faculty completed the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI) pretest, and 45 faculty completed the posttest. Six faculty were also interviewed. Analysis of covariance was used …
