Feminism, Domestic Abuse And The Singer-Songwriter, Kathryn Ferguson Jan 2026

Feminism, Domestic Abuse And The Singer-Songwriter, Kathryn Ferguson

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

This project explores how feminism and domestic abuse can be articulatedthrough songwriting. Research in music therapy, sociology and popular musicincreasingly speaks to the value of songwriting as a tool for personal andcommunity empowerment, but there is space to actively use songwriting toexplore feminist issues independently of the traditional commercial context ofpopular music. Existing feminist music has been deemed as at its mostsuccessful when it is linked clearly to social change in our communities(Greene, 2017, p.8). Modern popular feminist songwriting has been criticised fornot going far enough in deconstructing systemic patterns of patriarchy (Tong,2024, p.9). Considering this, engaging with academic research …

Translating Human Emotion Into Music: A Multimodal Machine-Learning Framework Linking Movement, Facial Expression, And Real-Time Generative Composition, Martin Mc Corry Jan 2026

Translating Human Emotion Into Music: A Multimodal Machine-Learning Framework Linking Movement, Facial Expression, And Real-Time Generative Composition, Martin Mc Corry

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

This thesis investigates whether embodied human expression—captured through facial and full-body motion—can be translated into musically coherent behaviour using time-series machine learning and real-time generative systems. The project develops and evaluates a multimodal framework that links participant-specific emotion inference to an interpretable, artist-configurable generative music system.Across two sensing modalities, personalised BiLSTM-based models achieved ~99%window-level validation accuracy within participants under a strict leak-free protocol, with no evidence of overfitting. These models were deployed within a low-latency real-time inference system. The research introduces a structured translation layer comprising a consensus mapping matrix and a tiered control architecture, mediating between probabilistic inference and …

Analysis Of Volatility Between Macroeconomic Variables And Busan Port Cargo Throughput According To Global Risks, Sang Ho Cho Jan 2026

Analysis Of Volatility Between Macroeconomic Variables And Busan Port Cargo Throughput According To Global Risks, Sang Ho Cho

Plymouth Business School Theses

This study investigates how container (BPC) and non-container (BPB) cargo throughput at Busan Port responds to structural shocks in global and domestic macroeconomic variables, and how their relative importance changes over time. The selection of variables was based on a combination of a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and semi-structured interviews (SSI). The econometric analysis applied a stepwise framework, employing cumulative Impulse Response Functions (IRF) and Forecast Error Variance Decomposition (FEVD) based on Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) estimations, as well as Historical Decomposition (HD) for specific crisis periods. While IRF and FEVD were used to capture dynamic properties under general …

Conceptually, it clarifies the meaning of trust, demonstrating that trust is not a one-dimensional construct centred on risk and vulnerability, but a multifaceted moral value …

Examining The Nexus Between Social Capital, Value Co-Creation And Entrepreneurship In Nigeria: Assessing The Moderating Role Of Social Media In A Resource-Constrained Context, Ben Omoruyi Jan 2026

Examining The Nexus Between Social Capital, Value Co-Creation And Entrepreneurship In Nigeria: Assessing The Moderating Role Of Social Media In A Resource-Constrained Context, Ben Omoruyi

Plymouth Business School Theses

This research provides a transformative perspective on how Social Capital (SC), Value Co creation (VCC), and Social Media (SM) interact to shape Entrepreneurial Outcomes (EOs) in institutionally weak, resource-constrained contexts. Positioned within a positivist ontology and grounded in Social Capital Theory, the research reconceptualises SC not as a passive stock of relationships but as a dynamic entrepreneurial capability, strategically mobilised to access resources, legitimacy, and opportunities. Focusing on Nigeria’s fashion industry, a sector characterised by informality, weak institutions, and heavy network reliance, the study adopts a quantitative, deductive design. Data from a cross-sectional survey of 580 entrepreneurs aged 18–55, in …

Driving Venture Success: A Collaborative Framework For The Consumer Goods Industry, Mohammad Alhusaeini Mohammad Jan 2026

Driving Venture Success: A Collaborative Framework For The Consumer Goods Industry, Mohammad Alhusaeini Mohammad

Plymouth Business School Theses

This thesis addresses the persistent gap between the strategic promise of external corporate venturing (ECV) and its frequently disappointing outcomes in the global consumer goods industry, with a specific focus on the non-durable consumer goods sub‑sector. Despite ECV’s recognised importance for innovation—particularly in a sector characterised by rapid consumer preference shifts, tight margins, and complex supply chains—collaborations with external start-ups are often undermined by cultural misalignment, strategic ambiguity, and ineffective performance measurement. Through an abductive, mixed-methods research design within an interpretivist paradigm—integrating archival analysis, six in-depth corporate case studies (P&G, PepsiCo, Unilever, Danone, Henkel, and L’Oréal), and 32 interviews with …

Measuring Outcomes In Evaluations Of Interventions To Prevent Youth Crime And Violence: Challenges And Potential Solutions, Sajid Humayun, Finlay Green, Helen Downham, Nick Axford Jan 2026

Measuring Outcomes In Evaluations Of Interventions To Prevent Youth Crime And Violence: Challenges And Potential Solutions, Sajid Humayun, Finlay Green, Helen Downham, Nick Axford

Peninsula Medical School

There is a clear imperative to prevent youth crime and violence owing to the significant social and economic costs for individuals involved and wider society. A considerable evidence base for ‘what works’ in this space exists but gaps remain. To address these, it is necessary to evaluate intervention effectiveness. The aim of this article is to explore challenges and potential solutions regarding outcome measurement in such evaluations. To do this we draw on the literature and our experience as evaluators. We argue that outcome selection should be informed by a robust theory of change, and that normally this will mean …

Alternative English Language Development Scheduling In High School: Long-Term English Learners’ Attitudes And Perceived Control, Kira Rashada

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This explanatory sequential mixed-methods study examined whether an alternative English Language Development (ELD) scheduling model influenced ninth-grade Long-Term English Learners’ (LTELs) attitudes toward school and perceived control at a California high school operating on a block schedule. Guided by Self-Determination Theory (Ryan & Deci, 2000), the study explored how differing ELD scheduling models may shape students’ experiences related to autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Specifically, the study compared ninth-grade LTEL students who participated in a traditional 90-minute ELD course during the 2023-24 school year with students who participated in an alternative scheduling model during the 2024-25 school year in which designated …

Inspiring Voices: The Impact Of Poetry Education, Nancy Aide Gonzalez St.Clair Jan 2026

Inspiring Voices: The Impact Of Poetry Education, Nancy Aide Gonzalez St.Clair

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Poetry education is frequently viewed as an enrichment activity rather than a critical practice that supports academic, emotional, and social development. This qualitative exploratory case study examined how participation in a nonprofit creative writing program in northern California influenced the cognitive development, emotional well-being, communication skills, empathy, and perspective taking of young adults. The study was guided by constructivism, radical constructivism, and symbolic interactionism. It centered on the lived experiences of six poetry program alumni aged 18 to 25. The researcher collected data through semi-structured Zoom interviews and poetry portfolios containing three poems selected by each participant. I used inductive …

Same Interdependent Risk, Different Valuation: How Risk Representation Shapes Ecosystem Investment Decisions, Shiyao Bao, Jiamin Zhao, En Yang, Llewellyn D. W. Thomas, Hansjörg Neth, Jan K. Woike, Sebastian Hafenbrädl Jan 2026

Same Interdependent Risk, Different Valuation: How Risk Representation Shapes Ecosystem Investment Decisions, Shiyao Bao, Jiamin Zhao, En Yang, Llewellyn D. W. Thomas, Hansjörg Neth, Jan K. Woike, Sebastian Hafenbrädl

School of Psychology

Why do decision makers value the same risky opportunity differently when the underlying probability of success is unchanged? We study this question in ecosystem investment decisions, where success requires that none of the critical components fail, causing component risks to compound. We conducted a high-powered preregistered replication and extension of Adner and Feiler's key study (N = 3,600). Participants valued a $100,000 opportunity that required six independent components to succeed, each with a 75% chance of success, yielding an overall success probability of ≈18%. Replicating prior work, participants reported higher confidence and assigned higher valuations when they first saw the …

Rivers Of Sovereignty: The Epa’S New Water Quality Standards Rule As A Potential Channel For Revitalizing Tribal Reserved Water Rights, Mostyn Josty Jan 2026

Rivers Of Sovereignty: The Epa’S New Water Quality Standards Rule As A Potential Channel For Revitalizing Tribal Reserved Water Rights, Mostyn Josty

Cardozo Law Review

This Note explores the federal government’s evolving approach to its obligation to protect tribal reserved water rights through a case study of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) 2024 Water Quality Standards Regulatory Revisions to Protect Tribal Reserved Rights rule (the “WQS Rule”). It argues that while the WQS Rule represents a step forward in safeguarding tribal water rights, the legal challenge it faces underscores broader issues of federalism, administrative authority, and the country’s fluctuating commitment to tribal sovereignty. The Note examines the WQS Rule’s legal foundation, its potential challenges, and the implications for tribal self-determination, emphasizing the need for a …

Fundamental Theoretical Difference In Ground-State Spectra Of 2-Electron Systems Bound By Coulomb And Harmonic Potentials, Viraht Sahni, Marlina Slamet Jan 2026

Fundamental Theoretical Difference In Ground-State Spectra Of 2-Electron Systems Bound By Coulomb And Harmonic Potentials, Viraht Sahni, Marlina Slamet

Physics Faculty Publications

We note a fundamental difference in the theoretically obtained ground-state spectra of 2-electron systems bound by the Coulomb and Harmonic potentials. The Coulomb bound systems considered are the natural Helium atom, Hydrogen molecule, and Tri Hydrogen cation. The “artificial” Harmonic bound systems are the 2D semiconductor quantum dot in a magnetic field with the electron spin moment and its interaction with the magnetic field considered, 3D Hooke’s atom, 3D Hooke’s molecule, and 3D Tri Harmonic Oscillator cation. Experiment and theory confirm the ground state of natural systems is solely a singlet state. We prove that for the “artificial” systems in …

Institute for School Partnership: Research & Publications

At Washington University’s Institute for School Partnership (ISP), the concept of partnership defines our work as researchers and practitioners interested in advancing high-quality, equitable education and is central to all we do. We are privileged to partner with hundreds of schools and thousands of educators each year across many different programs, projects, and initiatives ranging from fee-for-service professional learning and curriculum programs to long-term research-practice partnership (RPP) work. Just as teacher collaboration is a vital tool in producing healthy learning communities and positive outcomes for students, research has also shown that collaboration between and across teachers, administrators, professional learning providers, …

Women Shellfishers’ Role In Managing ‘Women’S Forest’ And Conservation Challenges In Youtefa Bay, Indonesia, Helmawaty E. Rumbiak Jan 2026

Women Shellfishers’ Role In Managing ‘Women’S Forest’ And Conservation Challenges In Youtefa Bay, Indonesia, Helmawaty E. Rumbiak

Open Access Master's Theses

Mangrove forests in Youtefa Bay hold critical ecological and cultural significance for the Enggros community, particularly for women. Known as the “women’s forest,” this area is where Enggros women harvest shellfish and collect firewood. Women shellfishers have a close relationship with the forest, where they connect with their children and other women. However, rapid urban development and pollution around the mangrove ecosystem have negatively impacted the women shellfishers and their role in managing the mangrove forest. Shellfishing activity will likely decrease as urban development around the forest increases, and more waste flows into the forest. This research examines the role …

The Law And Ai As An “Apex Collaborator”: Legal Frameworks For Optimized Cooperation, David S. Filippi, Bill Tomlinson, Andrew W. Torrance Jan 2026

The Law And Ai As An “Apex Collaborator”: Legal Frameworks For Optimized Cooperation, David S. Filippi, Bill Tomlinson, Andrew W. Torrance

FIU Law Review

Law fundamentally exists to enable human cooperation, providing frameworks for everything from basic contracts to complex international agreements. As artificial intelligence systems grow more sophisticated, they may enable new ways that collaborative activity can occur. We posit the possibility of a new kind of AI entity: the “Apex Collaborator,” a computational system with capabilities for cooperation and partnership that are superior, in at least some ways, to those of humans. Just as apex predators shape the ecosystems in which they live through predation, Apex Collaborators would shape human-AI networks through their ability to enhance peaceful coexistence, collective problem-solving, and shared …

Do Attorneys Matter In Civil Rights Litigation?, Nancy Leong, Mary Emmerling, Aili Miyake, Rochelle Orlando Jan 2026

Do Attorneys Matter In Civil Rights Litigation?, Nancy Leong, Mary Emmerling, Aili Miyake, Rochelle Orlando

FIU Law Review

Civil rights cases brought under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 are very difficult for plaintiffs to win. Commentators generally blame stringent doctrinal and pleading standards for plaintiffs’ low rates of success. This Article instead focuses on factors related to attorneys who litigate civil rights cases: the identity of the attorney (i.e., whether the attorney is a solo practitioner or affiliated with a firm or a nonprofit), the prior experience of the attorney in litigating civil rights cases, and whether these two elements are related to plaintiff success. We identified and coded the dockets for 463 civil rights cases, or 20% of …

Copyright Protection Or Media Suppression? The Digital Millennium Copyright Act's Impact On News Media And Journalism, Alenis Olivera Jan 2026

Copyright Protection Or Media Suppression? The Digital Millennium Copyright Act's Impact On News Media And Journalism, Alenis Olivera

FIU Law Review

When copyright law collides with press freedom, which one survives the takedown? The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) was once hailed as a necessary adaptation to copyright protection issues in the digital age. But now, nearly three decades since its incorporation into the Copyright Act, the DMCA has continued to cast a shadow over the journalism industry. The DMCA’s notice-and-takedown system, originally designed to protect copyright owners by allowing for quick removal of infringing content, has become a mechanism that risks suppressing lawful reporting and undermines the First Amendment’s guarantee of a free press. This Comment will explore how the …

Constructive Taxation: How Filing Requirements Turn Tax Benefits Into De Facto Taxes, Orli Oren-Kolbinger Jan 2026

Constructive Taxation: How Filing Requirements Turn Tax Benefits Into De Facto Taxes, Orli Oren-Kolbinger

FIU Law Review

Constructive taxation reveals a mismatch between the redistributive objectives Congress claims to pursue and how tax administration is carried out. Procedural barriers allocate benefits through bureaucratic processes rather than on the basis of need or eligibility, reflecting implicit judgments about who deserves them. Low-income households must still file, even when the government already has the necessary information to determine eligibility. Examining this through Congress’s taxing and spending powers, the Article shows that refundable credits function as tax expenditures, using the tax code to deliver benefits while creating administrative burdens that resemble economic penalties. When procedural barriers prevent eligible taxpayers from …

Owning Trading Opportunities, Kevin Douglas Jan 2026

Owning Trading Opportunities, Kevin Douglas

FIU Law Review

Owning Trading Opportunities identifies the doctrines and policy rationales used to protect property rights in corporate opportunities. It then explores adopting these doctrines and rationales to reform the notions of "fairness," "public interest," "investor protection," "market confidence," and "economic efficiency" driving the regulation of insider trading.

This approach yields several benefits. First, it shows that a policy commitment to equal trading opportunities for all investors is the functional equivalent of a commitment to fostering equal access to information for all investors. The U.S. Supreme Court attempted to reject the latter but failed by embracing the former.

Second, corporate opportunity cases …

Large Language Scholarship, Alan Rozenshtein, Kevin Frazier Jan 2026

Large Language Scholarship, Alan Rozenshtein, Kevin Frazier

FIU Law Review

Generative AI isn’t just coming for the legal academy—the era of what we call “Large Language Scholarship” is already here. Law professors are using AI to write articles in weeks rather than months. Law reviews face an unprecedented deluge of AI-polished submissions. And the judges who increasingly lean on AI to help draft their own opinions will soon struggle to distinguish genuine insight from sophisticated imitation. Yet, existing scholarship offers only fragmented responses, trapped in misguided debates about plagiarism and disclosure while missing the full scope of the unfolding transformation.

This Article provides the first comprehensive analysis of how generative …

No Justice Without Transparency: The Case For A Broad Presumption Of Public Access To Court Documents, Taylor Quimby Jan 2026

No Justice Without Transparency: The Case For A Broad Presumption Of Public Access To Court Documents, Taylor Quimby

FIU Law Review

This Comment argues that a broad presumption of public access to court  documents is essential to preserving the legitimacy and constitutional values  of the American legal system. Although the principle of public access is  rooted in common law and constitutional tradition, individual states differ in  how they approach transparency in the context of court documents. These  jurisdictional inconsistencies continue to gain significance, as the digital age  has completely transformed the way people consume information. The  increasing digitization of court records has heightened the need for consistent  and constitutionally grounded standards that preserve transparency while  adequately protecting legitimate privacy interests. Florida’s …

CONRAD Publications

Innate immunity predictors of HIV-1 risk and pathogenesis vary with reproductive hormones, pregnancy, and lactation, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We hypothesized that pregnancy-associated physiological adaptations alter systemic microRNA (miRNA) expression, thereby regulating immunity, pathogenesis and susceptibility to infection. We analyzed 174 serum samples from 88 participants in a longitudinal cohort from Uganda and Zimbabwe across pre-pregnancy (PP), pregnancy (P), and postpartum breastfeeding (BF). Cell-free peripheral blood miRNAs (n = 2083) were profiled using HTG EdgeSeq. Pregnancy-specific miRNAs were identified by intersecting differentially expressed (DE) miRNAs from P vs. PP and P vs. BF comparisons. miRNA targets and pathways …

Carceral Schools: Black Geographies Of Confinement, Surveillance, And Policing, M. Alex Evans Jan 2026

Carceral Schools: Black Geographies Of Confinement, Surveillance, And Policing, M. Alex Evans

FIU Law Review

This Article charts the deeply entrenched traditions of policing, containing, and surveilling blackness throughout this Nation’s history, with particular focus on Black students and schools. It provides school discipline data demonstrating the perpetual racial, gender, and ability disparities that Black students face decade after decade. It employs Black Geography as a theoretical framework to analyze school as a spatial and racial experience for all youth. This reading of carceral schools as Black geographic terrains of struggle expands the notion of school policing beyond dominant ideations which are largely limited to law enforcement officers in schools. It highlights the extent to …

Data Breaches, Causation, And Constitutional Standing, Anthony Palermo Jan 2026

Data Breaches, Causation, And Constitutional Standing, Anthony Palermo

FIU Law Review

This Article examines the causation requirement of Article III standing in modern data breach litigation. It argues that federal courts have systematically diluted constitutional limits on judicial power by presuming traceability where none exists. While data breaches are ubiquitous and alarming, the Article contends that the mere occurrence of a breach—and even an injury—should not itself establish a justiciable case or controversy. Drawing on foundational separation-of-powers principles, the Article situates the standing doctrine as an essential mechanism of judicial self- restraint—one that prevents courts from reflexively adjudicating societal fears untethered from any fair attribution to the defendant before the court. …
