Comparing Awssi And Traditional Winter Metrics For Predicting Overwinter Survival Of Juvenile Walleye (Sander Vitreus), Camille N. Shifrin May 2026

Comparing Awssi And Traditional Winter Metrics For Predicting Overwinter Survival Of Juvenile Walleye (Sander Vitreus), Camille N. Shifrin

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Winter conditions are an important driver of recruitment variability in freshwater fishes, yet winter severity is often characterized using single climate metrics. These simplified approaches may not capture the cumulative stress experienced by fishes during winter. The Accumulated Winter Season Severity Index (AWSSI) integrates multiple components of winter climate and may therefore provide a more biologically relevant indicator of overwinter survival. In this study, we compared AWSSI with traditional winter severity metrics to explain interannual variation in overwinter survival of juvenile Walleye (Sander vitreus) in Harlan County Reservoir, Nebraska. Model comparisons using Akaike’s Information Criterion (AIC) indicated that …

Humor And The Politics Of Belonging: Race, Gender, And Radicalization In Online Spaces, Reese Chatman May 2026

Humor And The Politics Of Belonging: Race, Gender, And Radicalization In Online Spaces, Reese Chatman

Master's Theses

This thesis argues that post-ironic and meta-ironic humor acts as an affective gateway to far-right radicalization within online masculine subcultures. Examining incel forums and Groyper spaces, it traces how humor operates as the architecture through which extremist ideology is introduced, normalized, and internalized. Drawing on a synthesis of meme studies, digital rhetoric, and theories of irony and affect, and using digital ethnography and critical discourse analysis, the study examines recurring meme figures, especially the Wojak and its NPC variant, as portable diagnostic devices that sort participants into the "awake" and the unconscious regardless of ideological content. Case studies include incel …

Construction Impacts On Nutrient Loads In An Urban Stream In The Ozark Highlands, Matthew B. Wilson May 2026

Construction Impacts On Nutrient Loads In An Urban Stream In The Ozark Highlands, Matthew B. Wilson

Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

Degradation of water quality is primarily caused by human activity, including urbanization. Urban stream syndrome can be characterized as a stream that has undergone physical, chemical, and biological changes as a result of urbanization, which can include an influx of nutrients that can drive unwanted plant and algae growth. It is known that construction can result in untreated nutrients entering a stream; however, it is not understood how construction affects downstream nutrient transport. The objective of this study was to understand the impacts of construction on urban water quality in Tanglewood Branch in Fayetteville, Arkansas, in the Ozark Highlands, which …

The Influence Of Additional Zinc Supplementation During Gestation On The Trace Mineral Concentrations Of Tissues, Milk, And Calf Serum At Birth, Hunter Miller

Animal Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

Minerals are known to play a key role in the immune system, growth, and development of animals. An important part of a calf's life is receiving colostrum immediately after birth, which provides the calf with immunoglobulins and necessary nutrients that are required. Furthermore, the gestation period is another very important aspect of the calf's life where they can take in the necessary nutrition. This study compared how two different supplements fed during the gestation period ultimately affected the mineral concentrations of the colostrum, placenta, calf plasma, and cow liver. The supplements that were provided were a 1) control that provided …

Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Numerous in vivo studies have demonstrated beta-2-adrenoceptor (β2AR) -agonism as permissive in the development of allergic lung inflammation, and have implicated the arrestin-dependent signaling arm of the β2AR in mediating this effect. However, the specific cell type(s) mediating β2AR regulation of allergic lung inflammation remain unestablished.

METHODS: To explore the potential contribution of airway epithelia in this phenomenon, we compared the ability of ractopamine (RP), recently identified as a Gs-biased beta-agonist, to that of the unbiased/balanced beta-agonist albuterol (ALB), on IL-13-stimulated mucin and cytokine production in human airway epithelia cultures in air-liquid interface (HAE).

RESULTS: ALB, which activates both …

Gestational Diabetes And Social Determinants Of Health In Black Women, Darianne Greenwood May 2026

Gestational Diabetes And Social Determinants Of Health In Black Women, Darianne Greenwood

Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) poses significant health risks, specifically increasing the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes post-delivery, as well as increasing the risk of adverse neonatal and maternal outcomes. Black women, in particular, experience disproportionately higher rates of GDM incidence, severity, and complications in comparison to White women. Biological factors alone do not account for these disparities, necessitating a deeper examination into how systemic factors, particularly the social environment, influence these inequitable health outcomes. The purpose of this comprehensive literature review is to answer the question: “How do the Social Determinants of Health (SDoH), such as residential segregation, food …

The first objective was to develop conceptual and technical competency in EEG/ERP theory, data acquisition, and processing. The second objective was to implement the visual oddball paradigm through experimental demonstration. This experiment tested the hypothesis that infrequent target stimuli will …

Unified Deep Learning Techniques For Spatial Detection And Temporal Forecasting Across Visual Domains, John Olawale Olamofe May 2026

Unified Deep Learning Techniques For Spatial Detection And Temporal Forecasting Across Visual Domains, John Olawale Olamofe

All Dissertations

This dissertation proposed a unified deep learning framework for spatial detection and temporal forecasting across visual domains, designed to address limited supervision, class imbalance, and scale variability. The framework was structured around four complementary principles: Domain-Aware Input Rebalancing, Representation-Centric Learning, Diversity-Driven Robustness, and Transfer Across Scale and Modality, which together enabled robust visual representation learning across heterogeneous data sources.

Domain-Aware Input Rebalancing mitigates non-uniform and sparse data distributions by actively reshaping inputs before learning via class-aware augmentation, sampling, resolution manipulation, and super-resolution. This principle underpins object detection in overhead satellite imagery (xView), dense urban aerial scenes (CADOT), temporally sparse NDVI …

Assessing The Use Of Exon-Skipping Morpholino Antisense Oligonucleotides Targeting The Different Sumo Paralogs As Enhancers Of The Antitumor Activity Of Chemotherapeutic Agents, Andrea Teresa Garcia-Morin

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Post-translational modifications (PTMs) are critical regulators of protein function, stability, and localization, with SUMOylation emerging as a key modulator of cellular stress response and survival in cancer. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is characterized by heightened dependence on SUMOylation to sustain pro-survival signaling, DNA repair, and resistance to chemotherapy. This dissertation investigates a novel chemosensitization strategy based on the splice-switching of SUMO transcripts in NSCLC cells using exon-skipping morpholinos (ESMs), which redirect splicing toward non-conjugatable SUMO alpha isoforms, thereby reducing global SUMOylation. We hypothesized that decreasing global SUMOylation through forced alternative splicing of SUMO transcripts would impair the stress-protective functions …

Numerical Methods For Modeling Darcy-Forchheimer Flow In Heterogeneous Porous Media, Nate Mcnair May 2026

Numerical Methods For Modeling Darcy-Forchheimer Flow In Heterogeneous Porous Media, Nate Mcnair

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Classic approaches to modeling fluid flow in porous media rely on Darcy's Law, which assumes a linear relationship between volumetric flow rate and the pressure gradient. However, in recent years, applications such as enhanced geothermal systems have highlighted the need to model nonlinear flow behavior, since experimental and observational data show that, once flow velocity exceeds a certain threshold, the relationship between velocity and macroscopic pressure gradient becomes nonlinear. This requires alternative models that more accurately capture the physical behavior of these systems. The Darcy-Forchheimer model provides one such alternative by introducing a nonlinear velocity-pressure relationship. However, this nonlinearity creates additional …

Novel Roles Of G-Beta-Gamma Signaling In Microtubule Dynamics And Neurodegeneration, Diana I. Olivas May 2026

Novel Roles Of G-Beta-Gamma Signaling In Microtubule Dynamics And Neurodegeneration, Diana I. Olivas

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Neurodegenerative disorders (NDDs), including Alzheimer's disease (AD), are characterized by progressive neuronal dysfunction, cytoskeletal disruption, and cognitive decline. Although Tau hyperphosphorylation and neurofibrillary tangle (NFT) formation are classical hallmarks of AD, emerging evidence suggests that microtubule (MT) dysfunction may precede and occur independently of Tau pathology. Understanding upstream regulators of MT dynamics is therefore critical for elucidating early mechanisms of neurodegeneration. Previous work from our laboratory demonstrated that G protein βγ (Gβγ) subunits directly interact with tubulin and promote MT assembly. However, the mechanism of Gβγ signaling in neuronal cytoskeletal stability and neurodegeneration remained poorly understood. The present study investigated …

Contamination-Aware Boosting For Cancer Prediction, Francis Opoku May 2026

Contamination-Aware Boosting For Cancer Prediction, Francis Opoku

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Modern cancer research increasingly relies on machine learning methods to model complex relationships between high-dimensional genomic predictors and clinically relevant outcomes. Gradient boosting methods, particularly XGBoost, have become widely used due to their strong predictive performance and ability to capture nonlinear effects and interactions. However, these methods are sensitive to contamination in the data, especially in the response variable, where even a small fraction of aberrant observations can disproportionately influence model fitting and degrade generalization.

In this thesis, we propose a contamination-aware extension of XGBoost, termed CA-XGBoost, which improves robustness by explicitly modeling residuals through a latent mixture framework. This …
