Effects Of Variable Light On Sexual Competition In Kelp Species, Jaycee Lanza Jul 2026

Effects Of Variable Light On Sexual Competition In Kelp Species, Jaycee Lanza

Master's Theses

As foundation species, kelps significantly influence the structure and composition of their surrounding habitat by modifying environmental conditions, including light levels, currents, nutrient availability, sedimentation, and seawater chemistry. Light, in particular, is a critical resource that varies greatly within kelp forests, affecting kelp reproductive processes such as gametogenesis, fertilization, and recruitment, which are vital to population persistence. Biological factors, such as density-dependent competition for resources and sexual competition with other kelps, can also affect such processes. To understand how environmental variables influence kelp populations, it is crucial to recognize their combined effects. This study investigated the impacts of light levels …

Impacts Of Physical Extremes On The Reproductive Output And Dispersal Of Stephanocystis Osmundacea, Jessica J. Franks

Master's Theses

Population replenishment is vital for species survival and depends on reproductive output and recruitment success. Many marine organisms rely on both short- and long-distance dispersal to sustain and expand their populations. Marine dispersal involves microscopic or planktonic stages that are influenced by currents, physical processes, and biological traits such as planktonic duration and sinking behavior. Depth and light gradients affect primary producer growth, impacting reproduction, especially in morphologically plastic seaweeds. This study examined how depth-related factors influence reproductive morphology, reproductive output, and dispersal of the subtidal brown seaweed Stephanocystis osmundacea in central California. Using field, lab, and computational methods, depth-driven …

The Characterization Of Bridging Waters And Ions In Protein-Rna Complexes, Leslie Duong Jul 2026

The Characterization Of Bridging Waters And Ions In Protein-Rna Complexes, Leslie Duong

Master's Theses

Here we explore the role of bridging waters and ions in protein-RNA complexes. From an initial set of 33 high-resolution X-ray crystal structures, 17 were identified such that protein-RNA complex and component protein and RNA chains were found within 1 pH unit as indicated by crystallization conditions and their diffraction temperatures meeting one of two ranges: above or below freezing. To define an even more realistic set, 12 unbound-unbound and unbound-pseudo-unbound complexes from the 17-set were studied, showing the large fraction of complexes indicating more protein and RNA water hydrogen bonding in their actual interfacial regions as opposed to those …

Hydrus Modeling Of A Sahelian Agroforestry System: An Investigation Of Local Water Balance, Nicole A. Butler Jul 2026

Hydrus Modeling Of A Sahelian Agroforestry System: An Investigation Of Local Water Balance, Nicole A. Butler

Master's Theses

Effects of drought can devastate agricultural productivity in the West African Sahel. Climate complexities, such as lower-than-average rainfall and high winds, can lead to crop failure and low yields, thereby creating food security issues. Agriculture in the Sahel is primarily rainfed, and the rain is becoming increasingly unpredictable due to the changing climate. The method of intercropping groundnut (Arachis hypogea) and pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) with the shrub species Piliostigma reticulatum can combat the effects of climate change and restore degraded soil. Intercropping can increase water availability and crop yield when compared to crops grown in the absence of shrubs. …

Looking Inwards, Turning Away: A Review Of Rehan Abeyratne’S ‘Courts And Lgbtq+ Rights In An Age Of Judicial Retrenchment’, Jwalika Balaji

Socio-Legal Review

This review engages with Rehan Abeyratne's book Courts and LGBTQ+ Rights in an Age of Judicial Retrenchment, which examines judicial responses to LGBTQ+ claims over the past two decades across three jurisdictions — the United States, India, and Hong Kong. Abeyratne argues that the apex courts in these countries have grown more inward-looking and have enabled the rise of illiberal and authoritarian forces; however, LGBTQ+ rights have emerged as an exceptional site where these courts continue to extend minimal remedies and adopt a tone of empathy, positioning themselves as the last bastion of liberal constitutionalism. Focusing on recent developments …

Bureaucratic Politics Of Reforestation In Indonesia's Conservation Areas: Turf Protection, Competing Mandates, And Implementation Deadlocks, Arief Setiyo Utomo, Pande Made Kutanegara, Ahmad Maryudi

Forest and Society

In response to extensive deforestation and land degradation, the Indonesian government has made reforestation one of its top policy priorities. Although several reforestation programs have been implemented, their outcomes have often been constrained by governance-related challenges. This study examines the political dynamics of reforestation in conservation areas by analyzing interactions between two key bureaucracies within the Ministry of Forestry: the Directorate General of Watershed Management and Forest Rehabilitation (DG-WMFR) and the Directorate General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (DG-NREC). Drawing on the bureaucratic politics perspective, we show how competing mandates, organizational interests, and bureaucratic turf protection motives shape the …

Michigan Tech Publications

The nonheme Fe(II)/2-oxoglutarate (2OG)-dependent histone demethylase KDM6B (JMJD3) has demonstrated a capacity for diversity in the oxidative transformations of Nε-alkylated lysine residues in histone H3 peptides; however, the mechanisms of such dealkylations, compared with standard KDM-catalyzed demethylations, remain unexplored. We implemented molecular dynamics and quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics to investigate the catalytic strategies for the sequential oxidation reactions of KDM6B with different N-alkylated forms of lysine K27 in the H3 peptide chain, that is Nε, Nε-methyl ethyl lysine (Lys(Me/Eth)) and Nε-isopropyl lysine (Lys(iPr)). The results for sequential oxidations, which yield alcohol, aldehyde, and …

Novel Integrative Mobilizable Elements (Imes) In Vibrio Chromosomes Linked To Translucent Post-Larvae Disease (Tpd), Ruyi Hao, Yan Fang, Yang Yang, Mingshu Yang

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Translucent post-larvae disease (TPD), caused by specific Vibrio parahaemolyticus strains, poses a global threat to shrimp aquaculture. A key virulence factor in these strains is the vhv gene cluster, which encodes toxins central to TPD pathogenesis. While plasmid-borne vhv genes have been extensively studied, the chromosome-borne vhv genes in TPD-associated strains remain poorly characterized. In this study, we systematically analyzed integrative mobilizable elements (IMEs) on the small secondary chromosomes of TPD-associated V. parahaemolyticus. Seven nearly identical novel IMEs harboring full-length vhv clusters were identified from seven independent strains. These IMEs encode a tyrosine recombinase for site-specific chromosomal integration, yet lack …

Extracellular matrix (ECM) dysregulation plays a significant role in the development of intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). The ECM around the chondrocytes in the nucleus pulposus (NP) is unique in that it contains ColVI. While linked to chondrocyte proliferation in cartilage, ColVI's specific role in IVD degeneration is less clear. Our aim was to determine the expression of ColVI in NP cells from degenerative IVDs, along with the effects of soluble ColVI on NP cells. Thus, we compared the expression levels of ColVI in human degenerated IVD samples, along with the effect of soluble ColVI on primary human NP cells. A …
