Placental Clues To Congenital Heart Disease: A Modeling Approach, Ashley S. Howard, Selina M. Tucker, Kaela Varberg Mar 2026

Placental Clues To Congenital Heart Disease: A Modeling Approach, Ashley S. Howard, Selina M. Tucker, Kaela Varberg

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Congenital heart disease (CHD) remains the most common birth defect and a leading contributor to global infant morbidity and mortality. Early diagnosis improves outcomes, yet current screening methods frequently miss CHD during routine prenatal screening. The placenta, which develops in parallel with the fetal heart and shares critical molecular pathways, represents an underexplored diagnostic tissue. We highlight clinical, epidemiological, and mechanistic insights that link placental abnormalities to CHD and explore how imaging, in vitro models, and multiomics can improve our understanding of the placenta–heart axis. Leveraging these tools will offer opportunities for earlier CHD detection and illuminate avenues for intervention …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Risperidone, an atypical antipsychotic, is increasingly prescribed in pediatric patients with psychiatric disorders. It is primarily metabolized by CYP2D6 to 9-hydroxyrisperidone, an active metabolite associated with a higher risk of adverse effects. The CYP2D6*17 and *29 alleles are prevalent in individuals of African ancestry and less studied than variants found in European ancestry individuals. This knowledge gap contributes to differences in health outcomes in individuals of non-European origin. The primary objective of this study is to replicate recently identified risperidone-specific activity for the CYP2D6*17 and *29 alleles. During psychiatric hospitalization, CYP2D6 was genotyped as part of routine care. Remnant plasma …

BACKGROUND: Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is an inherited predisposition to colorectal cancer and characterized by profuse colorectal adenomas starting from the second decade of life. Regional (left vs. right) differences in the colonic microbiologic and immunologic microenvironment may impact adenoma evolution but are poorly understood. We aimed to characterize regional molecular, microbial, DNA damage, and immune differences in pediatric FAP polyps to test the hypothesis that polyps in pediatric FAP exhibit distinct regional and molecular features that contribute to differential growth and genomic instability.

METHODS: Colonic polyps and adjacent non-polyp mucosa were harvested from pediatric FAP patients undergoing colonoscopy. Tandem …

Stroke Increases Motor Output Variability During Maximal Voluntary Isometric Contractions Of Knee Extensor Muscles In Adults, Zhilun Zhou, Stephanie Christine Wolfe, Brian Schmit, Matthew J. Durand, Sandra Hunter, Allison Hyngstrom

Physical Therapy Faculty Research and Publications

Greater motor output variability (MOV, inconsistency and unsteadiness) during submaximal tasks post stroke is associated with poorer motor performance. However, little is known about MOV during maximal tasks and relationships with clinical measures of motor performance among stroke survivors. This study determined inconsistency (across discrete attempts) and unsteadiness (within a single attempt) during knee extension maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVICs) in stroke survivors and neurotypical controls. Forty-three stroke survivors (28 female) and 31 age-matched neurotypical controls (15 female) performed a minimum of five knee extension MVICs with paretic and non-paretic legs (stroke) or dominant leg (controls). Inconsistency was calculated as …

Adapting Lessons From The Indian Subcontinent To Accelerate Elimination Of Visceral Leishmaniasis As A Public Health Problem In East Africa, Eva Iniguez, Daniel Masiga, Caryn Bern, Sridhar Srikantiah

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

This viewpoint draws lessons from the elimination of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) as a public health problem in the Southeast Asia region (SEAR) to inform efforts in East Africa (EA), now the global epicenter of Leishmania donovani transmission. VL is fatal and there is no licensed vaccine. Success in India relied on robust surveillance, rapid diagnosis, single-dose treatment, vector control, and multi-partner coordination. EA faces additional challenges than SEAR with multiple sand fly vectors, sensitive diagnostics and longer treatment regimens, high population mobility, and gaps in ecological and epidemiological knowledge. We highlight how strategies from South Asia could be adapted while …

Postcolonial Ecocriticism And The Recovery Of Hope: Okri, Dangarembga, And The Spiritual, John C. Hawley Mar 2026

Postcolonial Ecocriticism And The Recovery Of Hope: Okri, Dangarembga, And The Spiritual, John C. Hawley

English

This essay stages a comparative ecocritical reading of African and transnational texts—Cajetan Iheka’s Naturalizing Africa, Ben Okri’s Every Leaf a Hallelujah, Tsitsi Dangarembga’s This Mournable Body, Greg Sarris’s Becoming Story, and Karen Armstrong’s Sacred Nature—to examine how narrative re-situates the human within more-than-human worlds. Drawing on Iheka’s “aesthetics of proximity,” postcolonial theory, and critical posthumanism, it contrasts Okri’s hopeful, child-centered fable of multispecies reciprocity with Dangarembga’s portrayal of “slow violence,” psychic dispossession, and eco-touristic commodification in neoliberal Zimbabwe. Indigenous and spiritual frameworks in Sarris and Armstrong further disclose ancient precedents for posthuman ethics, foregrounding humility, …

Towards Socially Legitimized Trust In Ai-Learning Systems, Sanket Patole, Rob E. Carpenter, Reed M. Milewicz, Rose M. Baker, John R. Turner

Human Resource Development Faculty Publications and Presentations

AI-enabled learning technologies are rapidly becoming institutional infrastructure. In this context, “trust” cannot be treated as a simple user attitude or a byproduct of technical performance. We argue that durable trust in AI-enabled learning systems is fundamentally a legitimacy outcome: stakeholders must judge AI-mediated practices as appropriate, credible, and defensible within the normative and governance structures of learning environments. Building on socio-technical systems scholarship and institutional legitimacy theory, we introduce Socially Legitimized Trust (SLT), a framework that helps us understand adoption stability and contestation through alignment among three foundations: technocratic validation (credible evidence of capability, limits, and reliability), social validation …

Development And Evaluation Of The Interdisciplinary Graduate-Level Experiential Global Aging Education Program In The United States: A Case Of The Gerontology In Japan Course, Takashi Yamashita, Flavius R W Lilly, Diane B. Martin, Mio Kamijo

Journal of Global Education and Research

The cultural competence of the workforce is increasingly important due to global population aging and the growing diversity of the older population. Experiential learning, particularly through study abroad programs, is a known strategy to enhance these competencies; yet such training remains uncommon in higher education, especially at the graduate level. While the United States is currently a relatively young country with 17% of its population aged 65 years and older, the percentage is projected to increase to more than 21% by the end of this decade. Recognizing the value of learning from a super-aged society, a two-week study abroad course …

Emerging Options And Future Strategies In Immunotherapy For Advanced Lung Squamous-Cell Carcinoma, Y Wang, R Rosell, F R Hirsch, S Lu, R Govindan, K Park, S Peters, J J Zhang

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Advanced-stage lung squamous-cell carcinoma (LUSC) remains a therapeutic challenge. Although immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have revolutionized LUSC treatment, only a small subset of LUSC patients can achieve durable clinical benefits, underscoring the need for novel strategies. Emerging immunotherapy strategies have demonstrated early evidence of promise for LUSC patients, particularly multi-specific antibodies and fusion proteins, antibody-drug conjugates, adoptive cell therapies, and cancer vaccines. Additionally, advances in multi-omics and artificial intelligence offer potential for precise immunotherapy by deciphering the complex tumor-immune microenvironment and predicting therapeutic responses. The future of LUSC treatment lies in rational multi-target and biological therapies to boost immune cytotoxicity, …

Single-Cell Multi-Omic Techniques Highlight The Diverse Composition And Intercellular Interactions Of The Vestibular Schwannoma Tumor Microenvironment, Shree S Pari, Sangami Pugazenthi, Albert H Kim, Bhuvic Patel

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Vestibular schwannomas (VS) are tumors arising from Schwann cells of the vestibulocochlear nerve, often leading to hearing loss, gait imbalance, and other neurological complications. Recently, molecular profiling of VS using bulk and single-cell transcriptional and epigenetic approaches has reshaped our understanding of VS pathogenesis and challenged the long-standing view of VS being molecularly homogeneous. These integrative, multi-omic approaches reveal significant differences within VS and highlight diverse Schwann cell subpopulations and their interactions with the tumor microenvironment. Interestingly, these analyses also uncover 2 molecularly distinct groups of VS, one containing Schwann cells with an "Injury-like" phenotype that drives VS progression through …

Finding Significant Hits In Networks: A Network-Based Tool For Analyzing Gene-Level P-Values To Identify Significant Genes Missed By Standard Methods, Sandeep Acharya, Vaha Akbary Moghaddam, Wooseok J Jung, Yu S Kang, Shu Liao, Michael A Province, Michael R Brent

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Finding Significant Hits in Networks (FISHNET) uses prior biological knowledge, represented as gene interaction networks and gene function annotations, to identify genes that do not meet the genome-wide significance threshold but replicate, nonetheless. Its input is gene-level P-values from any source, including omicsWAS, aggregation of genome-wide association studies P-values, CRISPR screens, or differential expression analysis. It is based on the idea that genes whose P-values are low purely by chance are distributed randomly across networks and functions, so genes with suggestive P-values that cluster in densely connected subnetworks and share common functions are less likely to reflect chance and more …

Intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) are often rich in charged residues, and electrostatic interactions have a pronounced effect on their conformational distributions, interactions and functions. However, attaining quantitative understanding of electrostatics is challenging because of the sequence-specific arrangement of charges in the chain, the long-range nature of electrostatic interactions, charge screening, and the condensation of counterions-effects that all need to be taken into account self-consistently. Here, analytically tractable quantitative models are developed to predict ensemble average distances between any pair of residues in IDPs as a function of sequence and salt concentration, explicitly considering charge patterning. These models are tested systematically …

Eating in the absence of hunger represents a failure of homeostatic mechanisms responsible for energy balance and is a cause of obesity. The pervasive presence of food cues in the modern environment may play a role in this phenomenon. The present study used the technique of satiety-specific selective devaluation to investigate eating in the absence of hunger in the context of a reinforcement learning task. While participants’ performance on the task suggested that food on which they had sated no longer held value for them, event related potentials following images of the food were unaffected by the devaluation. Food cues …
