Time-Dependent Amplification Of Growth Rates In A Plankton-Oxygen Model, Rapha Coutin
Time-Dependent Amplification Of Growth Rates In A Plankton-Oxygen Model, Rapha Coutin
Master's Theses
Near-bottom hypoxia occurs when dissolved oxygen levels drop to a level that is harmful to marine biology, creating biological dead zones along the ocean floor. Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in the percentage of coastal, near-bottom, hypoxic water, with the average in 2021 nearly double that of the average from 2009 to 2018 and about twenty-eight times the average from 1950 to 1980. Recent literature has linked this increase in oceanic hypoxia to the increase in upwelling-favorable winds caused by climate change. Upwelling brings low-oxygen, nutrient-rich water up to the surface, leading to plankton blooms and mass consumption …
Toxic Immortality: Rethinking Decline And Plastics With Lucretius, Jessica Croteau
Toxic Immortality: Rethinking Decline And Plastics With Lucretius, Jessica Croteau
Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship
Much of contemporary environmental thought operates within paradigms of conservation, sustainability, and resilience—frameworks that assume the goal of ecological politics must be to prevent loss, preserve stability, and mitigate decline. However, these frameworks inadequately address cases where persistence and abundance, rather than disappearance, are the source of harm. By contrast, this article argues that an ecological ethic oriented toward decline, unbecoming, and decomposition reveals an alternative set of political and material stakes: not the conservation of things but their proper dissolution. Drawing from the materialist philosophy of Lucretius, the article critiques the prevailing assumption that endurance is inherently beneficial, highlighting …
After Grants Pass: The Case For Recentering The Criminal Legal System And Its Constitutional Constraints, Scout Katovich
After Grants Pass: The Case For Recentering The Criminal Legal System And Its Constitutional Constraints, Scout Katovich
William & Mary Law Review
In City of Grants Pass v. Johnson, the Supreme Court held that the Eighth Amendment does not prohibit cities from punishing unhoused people for sleeping outside when they have nowhere else to go. While the holding was legally narrow, the Court’s rhetoric framed criminalization as sound policy rather than punishment, obscuring the criminal legal system implications at the heart of the case. Cities responded not to the narrow holding but to the rhetorical message: In the year following the decision, they enacted hundreds of new laws criminalizing homelessness and dramatically intensified enforcement.
This Article argues for the recentering of …
The New Necessity, Ezra Rosser
The New Necessity, Ezra Rosser
William & Mary Law Review
According to the U.S. Supreme Court, cities are free to criminalize homelessness. The 2024 case City of Grants Pass v. Johnson is the most important homelessness case in decades and was a significant blow to advocates for the unhoused. The conservative majority rejected the idea that city ordinances criminalizing sleeping in public amounted to cruel and unusual punishment insofar as they penalized status. There is no sidestepping the loss. But within the faint glow of the embers of the oral argument and of the decision itself, there is the possibility that a new understanding of necessity, supported by the same …

Family Nurse Practitioner Workforce Response To The Public Health Opioid Crisis Through Curriculum Revision, Dayle Sharp, Marcy Doyle, Michelle Capozzoli
All Materials
The opioid crisis continues to pose a critical public health challenge in the United States, demanding an adequately trained primary care workforce. In response, a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program revised its curriculum to prepare students to care for individuals with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) through a multi-pronged educational intervention. Grounded in Social Cognitive Theory, Situated Learning Theory, and Community of Practice Theory, the revised curriculum integrated a 24-hour Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) waiver training, clinical shadowing with MOUD providers, and participation in a 10-month Project ECHO telementoring series based on SAMHSA’s Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) 63. Results …

Background: Apolipoprotein E (APOE) alleles are well-established genetic risk factors for Alzheimer's disease (AD), but their effects on AD biomarkers (amyloid beta [Aβ]42/40, phosphorylated tau [p-tau]181, neurofilament light chain [NfL], and glial fibrillary acidic protein [GFAP]) may vary across populations due to ancestry-, age-, and sex-related differences. We hypothesized that these effects vary across Hispanic/Latino background groups with distinct ancestral admixture.
Methods: We analyzed ε2 and ε4 allele associations with AD biomarkers using survey-weighted linear regression models, adjusting for demographic covariates. Secondary analyses examined genetic analysis group- and ancestry-specific effects.
Results: ε4 was associated with lower Aβ42/40 and higher p-tau181and …
Demography And Dispersal Influence The Relationship Between Habitat Suitability And Population Density, Cleber Ten Caten, Tad Dallas
Demography And Dispersal Influence The Relationship Between Habitat Suitability And Population Density, Cleber Ten Caten, Tad Dallas
Faculty Publications
A central goal of ecology is to understand spatial patterns of species densities. Habitat suitability estimates from species distribution models (SDMs) could be used to represent species density and overcome the scarcity of density data. However, there is mixed evidence that habitat suitability is a reliable descriptor of density, and it is suggested that local dynamics affect the relationship between habitat suitability and density. We simulated population dynamics for 200 virtual species considering different combinations of factors (demographic stochasticity, dispersal, and intraspecific competition) that affect population sizes and SDMs were trained using different sets of environmental predictors to evaluate when …

Background:
The treatment and prognosis of melanoma have historically been based on histologic stage and Breslow depth; however, due to the increase in surveillance, melanomas are being identified at an earlier stage and lower Breslow depth. Advances in genetic testing, such as Decision Dx®, mean that melanoma diagnostic decisions and prognosis can now be directed by genetics. The purpose of this project was to assess the influence of a Decision Dx® high-grade (Class 2A/B) classification on the treatment of melanoma patients at a regional medical center, particularly those not deemed high risk by conventional classification methods, including Breslow depth and …

Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications
Appetite self-regulation (ASR) among children is thought to have a fundamental role in shaping the development of healthy eating behaviors, dietary intake, and growth during childhood. Parallel to developmental frameworks for understanding "general" self-regulation among children, ASR has been described as involving children's use of "top-down" cognitive processes to moderate "bottom-up" biological drives around food approach and avoidance in the interest of achieving desired eating behaviors or outcomes. Whereas bottom-up ASR processes during early childhood are well characterized, particularly in the context of dysregulation and obesity risk, the role of top-down ASR processes in the development of healthy eating behaviors …

Background: Dens evaginatus cusps typically have pulpal tissue, and fracturing of the cusp leads to necrosis. Immature permanent teeth with pulp necrosis have traditionally been treated with apexification, which eliminates infection but does not promote root development.
Methods: Regenerative endodontics utilizes revascularization by infiltrating stem cells from the apical papilla and using them to treat an immature necrotic tooth with periapical infection.
Results: Periapical radiolucency completely resolved, root length and thickness increased, and vitality returned at the one-year follow-up.
Conclusion: Regenerative protocols promote root development, reducing fracture risk. This treatment offers improved outcomes with fewer appointments and shorter treatment duration.

Copyrighting Nature, Cathay Y. N. Smith -- Professor Of Law
Vanderbilt Law Review
This Article introduces a "work of nature" doctrine for copyright law. In 1903, the U.S. Supreme Court established the principle in copyright law that, while anyone can copy the original source of a copyrighted work, they cannot copy an author's copy of the original source. A century later, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit hinted at a "work of nature" exception, suggesting that even if copying the copy is restricted, copying elements of expression that nature displays for all observers is permissible. U.S. patent law excludes products of nature from protection, but this Article is the first …

2020-Current year OA Pubs
TDP-43 pathology is a hallmark of fatal neurodegenerative disorders, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), and limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43-encephalopathy (LATE). In affected patients, cytoplasmic TDP-43 aggregates are accompanied by disruption of its normal nuclear localization and function. Because TDP-43 is an RNA binding protein that controls transcript processing, including repression of cryptic exon splicing, its loss leads to dysregulation of gene expression. Despite its central significance in disease, the connection between TDP-43 aggregation and dysfunction remains poorly understood, and models to study the underlying mechanisms are limited. Here, we characterize a robust and quantitative cell-based reporter that captures …

Background/Objectives: Acute exercise remodels many interconnected biochemical pathways in metabolically active tissues. This remodeling involves the activation of the energy-sensing AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) to maintain cellular energy homeostasis. Critical energy reserves of glycogen, primarily stored in liver and skeletal muscle and known to interact with AMPK, are utilized to help meet increased energy demands with exercise. However, the breadth of metabolic pathways regulated by acute exercise and AMPK’s interactive roles with glycogen remain incompletely understood. This study therefore aimed to map mouse liver and skeletal muscle metabolite responses to continuous acute exercise and disruption of AMPK-glycogen interactions. Methods: Liquid …

Plm-Effector: Unleashing The Potential Of Protein Language Models For Bacterial Secreted Protein Prediction, Dandan Zheng, Lihong Chen, Guansong Pang, Jian Yang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Bacterial secreted proteins, particularly effectors delivered by specialized secretion systems, are key mediators of virulence and host-pathogen interactions. However, accurate computational identification remains challenging, as many existing methods rely heavily on sequence similarity or handcrafted features, and often focus on a single secretion system. Recent studies have reported that some bacterial effectors may be associated with more than one secretion system, highlighting the complexity of secretion system annotation and motivating the development of system-aware computational prediction approaches. Here, we present PLM-Effector, a hybrid deep learning framework that integrates modern protein language models (PLMs) with multiple neural architectures via a two-layer …

This study investigated the effects of Sanafoam Vaporooter II (SVII) on carbon removal and nitrification in activated sludge reactors (ASRs) under long-term operation. Two parallel bench-scale ASRs were installed and operated at Subiaco municipal wastewater treatment plant in Perth, Western Australia: one was exposed to incremental SVII concentrations (1–3000 mg/L), while the other served as an unamended control. Stoichiometric analysis revealed stable organic matter removal across all SVII doses. In contrast, nitrification decreased progressively at concentrations exceeding 128 mg/L. …

Introduction: Serum neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (sNGAL), a renal tubular marker, and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), a hematological inflammatory marker are two biomarkers that have recently received attention, because of their association with kidney disease. This study examined the diagnostic value sNGAL and NLR in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients with nephropathy. Materials and Methods: In this hospital-based case-control research, 97 T2DM participants and 70 healthy subjects were included. Participants' information was documented using a structured questionnaire and patient case records. Venous blood was drawn from each participant and early morning midstream urine samples were collected for blood and urine measurements …

Acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM) with pleural metastases is rare and under-recognised. We report an 86-year-old woman with progressive dyspnoea and pleuritic chest pain. 18 months ago, she was diagnosed with stage IIC ALM of the right heel, and was treated with wide local excision, but she declined adjuvant therapy. Imaging demonstrated a large left pleural effusion with diffuse pleural thickening, pulmonary mass, and hepatic metastases. Brownish pleural fluid, along with thoracoscopic identification of multiple pigmented nodules, led to a histologically confirmed diagnosis. Talc pleurodesis was performed for symptom control, and best supportive care was pursued. This case highlights the diagnostic …
