Redefining Retention: Analyzing The Experiences Of Black Men In Higher Education Through The Lens Of Race, Masculinity, And Strength-Based Approaches, Roderick Waters
Redefining Retention: Analyzing The Experiences Of Black Men In Higher Education Through The Lens Of Race, Masculinity, And Strength-Based Approaches, Roderick Waters
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
Black male students have continued to face systemic challenges in higher education, particularly at historically White institutions (HWIs), where they experience lower retention and graduation rates compared to their peers. Although enrollment numbers have increased, institutional barriers, racialized campus environments, and deficit-based narratives have continued to contribute to disparities in academic success. Much of the existing research has focused on the challenges Black male students encounter rather than the strategies, relationships, and institutional conditions that support their persistence. This study sought to shift that focus by exploring the lived experiences of Black men who persisted at an HWI through an …
The Moderating Effect Of Gender And Humor On Leader Evaluation, Russell John Marshall
The Moderating Effect Of Gender And Humor On Leader Evaluation, Russell John Marshall
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
There has been much discourse in the popular press, political, and professional spheres about the humor used by leaders and aspiring leaders. Although humor is seen as mostly positive in the workplace, there have been significant findings that humor’s impact is influenced by gender/sex. Male humor use is often seen as functional, while female humor use is seen as disruptive (Evans et al., 2019). This study examines how humor and gender/sex affects likeability and professional respect for leaders. It was predicted that humor use would increase male leaders likeability and professional respect while decreasing these rating for female leaders. Participants …
Does One Size Fit All? A Lifespan Perspective On The Relationship Between Work Design And Mental Health, Christina Ju
Does One Size Fit All? A Lifespan Perspective On The Relationship Between Work Design And Mental Health, Christina Ju
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
As the global workforce ages, traditional work design models that assume job resources are universally beneficial require re-evaluation. Drawing upon lifespan development and socioemotional selectivity theory, this longitudinal study examined how chronological age moderates the effects of skill discretion and coworker support on job-related mental health over a 20-year period. Data from three waves of the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) survey (N = 3,890) were analyzed using linear mixed models to separate within-person changes from between-person differences. Results indicated that skill discretion and coworker support were positively associated with job-related mental health overall. The hypothesis that the benefits …

Exploring The Roles Of Grit And Health Anxiety In The Relationship Between Discrimination And Pain-Coping Among Adolescents And Young Adults, Giselle Mcpherson Isbell
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
Chronic pain is a complex and highly prevalent concern that can significantly disrupt functioning during adolescence and emerging adulthood. Pain during this developmental period may interfere with academic engagement, social relationships, emotional functioning, and the transition toward independence. Psychosocial stressors such as discrimination and heightened health anxiety may negatively influence pain experiences and coping, whereas protective psychological characteristics such as grit may buffer these effects. The present study examined the relationships between discrimination, health anxiety, grit, pain outcomes, and coping strategies in emerging adults with chronic pain. Participants completed self-report measures assessing discrimination, health anxiety, grit, pain intensity and frequency, …
Towards Reliable And Trustworthy Deep Learning Through Explainability And Interpretability, Dipkamal Bhusal
Towards Reliable And Trustworthy Deep Learning Through Explainability And Interpretability, Dipkamal Bhusal
Theses
Deep neural networks achieve state-of-the-art performance across many domains, yet their deployment in high-stakes settings is constrained by two challenges: opaque decision-making and vulnerability to adversarial manipulation. This thesis investigates explainability and interpretability as principled mechanisms for improving the reliability and trustworthiness of deep learning models. First, we develop new post-hoc explanation methods that improve feature attribution and concept-based explanations. These methods provide faithful decision cues by modeling meaningful feature interactions and extracting faithful coherent concepts, enabling more reliable understanding of why a model predicts a given label. Second, we show that explanation quality is not solely a property of …
In-Context Retrieval For Molecules And Chemical Synthesis Pathways, Abhisek Dey
In-Context Retrieval For Molecules And Chemical Synthesis Pathways, Abhisek Dey
Theses
Contrastive learning methods require well-defined positive pairs, limiting their applicability to domains where complete, high-fidelity pairings are available. In practice, large-scale scientific corpora --including patents, publications, and web-scale data -- contain vast quantities of contextually relevant but incompletely paired samples that are discarded under standard training paradigms. In this work, we demonstrate that hard negative mining can be leveraged to construct pseudo-positive supervision signals from unpaired or partially paired data, enabling contrastive learning to exploit the full breadth of available corpora without sacrificing representational quality. Using a large-scale chemical drug patent corpus as a testbed, we train a cross-modal contrastive …
Leveraging Volatile Ecram Dynamics For Short-Term Plasticity In Neuromorphic Circuits, Sean Borkholder
Leveraging Volatile Ecram Dynamics For Short-Term Plasticity In Neuromorphic Circuits, Sean Borkholder
Theses
Short Term Plasticity (STP) is fundamental for information processing and computational efficiency within biological neural systems. STP has previously been implemented at the circuit level using complex designs with high power and area overheads, resulting in designs that are not scalable in neuromorphic systems. Electrochemical random-access memory (ECRAM) devices naturally exhibit STP behavior through volatile ion dynamics, creating transient conductance modulation. In previous ECRAM implementations, this behavior was seen as an undesirable artifact of device programming when implemented as a Compute in Memory (CIM) device; however, this thesis proposes leveraging the volatile behavior to instead act as a computational resource. …

The New York State Dental Journal
Periodontal treatment modalities have evolved substantially to evidence-based minimally invasive treatment options. Lasers have proved to be an effective tool by providing a myriad of benefits and advantages while eliminating many of the negative sequelae that have been historically associated with conventional pocket elimination surgery. Laser-assisted new attachment procedure (LANAP) is a well-defined treatment protocol that has been validated with human histology and has demonstrated both short- and long-term success. LANAP has proven to be an effective, safe and predictable treatment option for achieving regeneration and new attachment formation, leading to favorable clinical outcomes, improved patient compliance and acceptability.

The Role Of Magnesium Supplements In The Management And Prevention Of Headache Disorders, Tatum Schroeder
The Role Of Magnesium Supplements In The Management And Prevention Of Headache Disorders, Tatum Schroeder
Libraries Undergraduate Research Award (LURA) Winners
Much of the global population suffers from headache disorders like migraine. Because there are so many triggers and unknown explanations for migraine, it can be hard to find effective treatments for it. There are some studies that point to inflammation as either a cause or result of headache disorders; therefore, it is natural that we should explore the possibility of inflammation reducing factors when considering treatment options. The factor being explored in this review is magnesium supplementation, which has been shown to reduce inflammation by decreasing the amount of calcitonin-gene-related-peptide (CGRP) in circulation. There is a clear link between migraine …

Plasmoid Vortex System Retrofit A Sustainability And Efficiency Study On Internal Combustion Engines, Walker Hall
Plasmoid Vortex System Retrofit A Sustainability And Efficiency Study On Internal Combustion Engines, Walker Hall
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The thesis addresses the persistent inefficiency and environmental degradation caused by internal combustion engines in modern vehicles, a major issue as the automotive industry faces increasing pressure to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Internal combustion engines, which power most cars today, convert only about 20-30% of fuel energy into useful work, with the remainder lost as heat and exhaust waste, including carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO₂), hydrocarbons (HC), and nitrogen oxides (NOx). This inefficiency contributes to global carbon emissions, with transportation accounting for approximately 29% of U.S. greenhouse gases in 2021 [1]. As regulatory standards tighten (e.g., …
Low-Complexity Structured Neural Networks And Their Usage In Image And Signal Processing, Adam Kuzmicki
Low-Complexity Structured Neural Networks And Their Usage In Image And Signal Processing, Adam Kuzmicki
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Conventional neural networks face significant challenges due to high computational costs, large parameter counts, and reliance on backpropagation, which restricts their application in resource-constrained and real-time settings. To address these challenges, this thesis proposes three structured neural network (NN) architectures grounded in the theories of sparse and self-contained factorizations of transforms, with applications to image compression, reconstruction, classification, encryption, and also adaptive wideband multi-beam beamforming. The first neural network architecture, named DCTrix-Net, replaces conventional spatial con- volution with highly sparse factorization of the discrete Cosine transform (DCT) complemented by Toeplitz-structured weight initialization, achieving at least 97% FLOP reduction over CNNs, …
