Education As A Right, Homelessness As A Crisis: The Displaced Futures Of American Homeless Youth, Tina Pham
Education As A Right, Homelessness As A Crisis: The Displaced Futures Of American Homeless Youth, Tina Pham
Washington and Lee Law Review
Homelessness in the United States has been a humanitarian crisis affecting youth as one of its most vulnerable populations. Education is one of the few opportunities to break through this cycle of poverty. Recognizing the gap in education for homeless students and other students, Congress enacted the McKinney-Vento Act, which guarantees homeless youth educational rights to access public education. Following the Supreme Court’s decision in Grants Pass v. Johnson, however, the rise of criminalizing policies, such as encampment sweeps and anticamping ordinances, threatens the success of the Act. These policies not only destabilize families, but they also leave homeless youth …

The State Of Youth Ministry In Asian American Churches Today, Eunice Hong, Jinna Si Lo Jin
Great Commission Research Journal
Despite growing concern about youth disengagement from Christianity and the Christian church (Pew Research Center, 2025), strategies specifically tailored to engage Asian American youth remain under-researched. Drawing from interviews with 16 senior pastors and youth leaders across North America, this paper presents key findings on current ministry practices, with implications of emerging approaches to foster deeper youth engagement in Asian American church contexts.
Implementing Outdoor And Nature-Based Learning For Infants And Toddlers, Kelly Kazeck
Implementing Outdoor And Nature-Based Learning For Infants And Toddlers, Kelly Kazeck
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Many early childhood educators in Minnesota are expanding outdoor and nature-based learning opportunities because of the positive developmental benefits they offer children. Time spent outdoors supports social, emotional, cognitive, and physical learning while promoting positive relationships with peers and the natural world. This capstone research found that implementing outdoor and nature-based learning requires more specialized training, safety precautions, equipment, planning, and preparation than typical indoor programming. However, much of the research focuses on preschool-aged children, although implementation with infants and toddlers presents additional challenges and requires specific supports. Therefore, this capstone project answered the question, “What can infant and toddler …

Youth traffic safety persists as a critical planning challenge and public health concern in New Mexico, where pedestrian fatality rates consistently rank among the highest in the United States (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, NTSA, Governors Highway Safety Association, GHSA, 2023; Baca, 2025). Students (children), due to their daily interactions with roadways, whether when they walk, bike, ride transit, or drive/get driven to and from school, are among the most vulnerable groups within the transportation system (Ferenchak, N. Wesley, M., 2017. For many students in Albuquerque, the commute to or from school is one of the most dangerous parts of …
The Bronco Well: An Educational Podcast For Pediatric Caregivers’ Wellbeing & Quality Of Life, Molly Veldheer
The Bronco Well: An Educational Podcast For Pediatric Caregivers’ Wellbeing & Quality Of Life, Molly Veldheer
Capstone Projects
Pediatric caregivers of children with increased and complex physical, cognitive, and emotional needs are an often-overlooked population. Though their children may be involved in many essential services including occupational therapy, the needs of these caregivers largely go unmet. Occupational therapists are equipped to provide valuable care and education to the entire family and not just their pediatric clients. In efforts to fill the unmet needs, this occupational therapy-based podcast was created as resource for pediatric caregivers about pediatric caregivers. The development of this capstone considered the time, energy, and financial strains that are often placed on pediatric caregivers and determined …
Assessing Stakeholders’ Perceptions Of Organizational Effectiveness Through A Multidimensional Theoretical Model: An Interpretive Phenomenological Qualitative Case Study, Andrea M. Paul
School of Public Service Theses & Dissertations
Nonprofit organizations play a fundamental role in meeting community needs when government resources are limited or nonexistent. For decades, scholars and practitioners have recognized the importance of nonprofit-government partnerships for effective public service delivery. This study examines faith-based organizations as a specific type of hybrid nonprofit organization. As social, economic, and environmental challenges intensify, the need for community-based programs led by faith-based organizations also increases. These organizations are working to combat several of society's wicked problems, including but not limited to homelessness, food insecurity, drug addiction, youth and family services, and climate change. Nonprofit sector performance measurement is often recognized …

Client And Self-Advocacy In Coordinated Entry: A Qualitative Case Study Of King County, Washington’S Coordinated Entry For All, Ugochinyere Onyeukwu
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
Despite policy attempts to address homelessness, it remains a societal concern. One such policy effort was the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s mandated implementation of Coordinated Entry (CE) systems, a streamlined, equitable approach to match individuals to the appropriate housing intervention based on need and housing vulnerability. However, research indicates that CE may not produce the desired outcomes. There is limited research identifying factors that may interfere with effective need-based housing allocation. Thus, this qualitative study aimed to gain insight into advocacy in CE as a potential factor influencing implementation. This study used Qualitative Content Analysis to explore …
Child Welfare Upholds Black Family Separation While Denying Essential Constitutional Protections, Samantha Nichol
Child Welfare Upholds Black Family Separation While Denying Essential Constitutional Protections, Samantha Nichol
UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice
This note examines the refusal to expand constitutional protections to include proceedings concerning child welfare. A system that largely mirrors and works in tandem with the criminal system, which enjoys robust constitutional safeguards. Important to the analysis of the rejection of these protections is an acknowledgement that child welfare, or welfare more broadly, is a system that upholds racial power structures and a tradition of family separation. Just as the overincarceration of Black people has been acknowledged by legal scholars to be a particular badge and incident of slavery, the child welfare system should also be critiqued as a system …
The Experiences Of Faith-Based Non-Profit Human Services Professionals In The Implementation Of Parental Resources For Homeless Mothers, Latasha Sublett
The Experiences Of Faith-Based Non-Profit Human Services Professionals In The Implementation Of Parental Resources For Homeless Mothers, Latasha Sublett
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Homelessness is a worldwide, complex social problem that has impacted groups like women and children. In recent studies, researchers have demonstrated that homeless mothers can face mental health challenges and stressors related to parenting, while homeless children can experience emotional and physical difficulties. Parental resources have been cited as a tool to help homeless families address stress and development in distinct settings in current research; however, there was limited research on how faith-based non-profits utilize parental resources to help homeless mothers. The purpose of the generic qualitative study was to learn the perceptions and experiences of faith-based non-profit human services …

Mental Health In Rural School-Age Youth: Examining Trends In Adverse Childhood Experiences, Positive Childhood Experiences, And Family Resilience From 2018-2023, Mary Katherine Shires
Brown School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This study examined trends in adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), positive childhood experiences (PCEs), family resilience, and mental health conditions in rural and urban youth in the United States from 2018-2023. It also assessed whether PCEs and family resilience moderated the association between ACEs and youth mental health and whether these relationships differed by geographic setting and across time. Data were drawn from six years (2018-2023) of the National Survey of Children’s Health (NSCH), a nationally representative, cross-sectional, caregiver-reported survey assessing child wellbeing. The analytic sample included school-age youth (ages 6-17) residing in states that reported metropolitan (urban) versus non-metropolitan (rural) …

Optimized patient centered care in complex surgical cases requires comprehensive preparation through both clinical examination and radiographic interpretation. Our case demonstrates how diagnostic imaging can reveal critical radiographic findings that alter treatment approach. Pre-operative preparation involving thorough clinical and radiographic examination, in combination with excellent clinician rapport, leads to a biopsychosocial approach to dental treatment, emphasizing whole patient care.
Biopsy returned from oral pathology with diagnosis of odontogenic keratocyst (OKC). At the time of publication, the patient is nearing definitive treatment of the cystic lesion with enucleation and removal of tooth #16. In our case, thorough radiographic interpretation, the professional …

Adequate Care Coordination Is Associated With Reduced Unmet Mental Health Needs For Children, Genevieve Graaf, Kristin Gigli, Phillip Hughes, Kathleen C. Thomas
Pharmacy Faculty Scholarship
Children with special healthcare needs (CSHCN), especially those with mental health needs, often receive services from multiple service sectors, including schools. Thus, care coordination may play a critical role in access to mental health care for these children. This cross-sectional study used multivariable logistic regression with pooled data from the National Survey of Children’s Health (2020–2023), focusing on a subsample of children with caregiver-reported mental health problems and a reported need for mental healthcare. We estimated the prevalence of parent-reported need for and receipt of effective care coordination and provider communication with schools. It also measures the association between parent-reported …

Human Services Administrators’ Perceptions Of Youth In Acute Crisis Needs, Carey Alvord
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is a lack of acute crisis services for youth in the United States. In San Luis Obispo County, California, there are no designated facilities with crisis stabilization services near family homes for children in acute crisis. Grounded in Stroul et al.’s system of care approach for children and families, the purpose of this qualitative force field analysis study was to explore human service administrators’ perceptions of the services youth in acute crisis need to stabilize within San Luis Obispo County. Directors at youth human services county departments and nonprofits were contacted to help recruit a purposeful sample of 11 …

Civil Status, Single: The Emotional Experiences And Transformations Of Single Teenage Filipino Mothers Across Generations In Their Transition To Adulthood, Ana Sofia V. Collado, Gabrielle Lumongsod, Ramona Motos, Ysabel Ronquillo, Susan Grace Tana Neri
DLSU Senior High School Research Congress Conference Proceedings
Single teenage mothers in the Philippines face unique emotional and psychological challenges as they transition from adolescence to adulthood. These challenges often stem from societal stigma, guilt, and the loss of personal aspirations, which negatively affect their mental health and self-identity. Guided by Intersectionality theory, this study explores the emotional experiences of single teenage Filipino mothers, aiming to understand how early motherhood influences their emotional well-being, identity formation, and personal growth. Six Filipino women, aged 18 to 55, were purposively selected to provide a diverse range of generational perspectives. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and the data were analyzed using Braun …
Weakening The Reasonable Efforts Requirement In New Mexico Termination Of Parental Rights Cases, Monika Myers
Weakening The Reasonable Efforts Requirement In New Mexico Termination Of Parental Rights Cases, Monika Myers
New Mexico Law Review
Parents’ right to control the upbringing of their own children is long-established in the United States. However, in the case of child abuse, neglect, or abandonment, a state can terminate parental rights, permanently severing the legal relationship between a parent and a child. In New Mexico, to terminate parental rights for abuse or neglect the State must prove three elements by clear and convincing evidence: (1) the child is abused or neglected; (2) the conditions that brought the child into care are unlikely to change in the foreseeable future and (3) this is the case despite reasonable efforts by the …

The Role Of Teacher-Student Identity-Matching In Multi-Informant Universal Screening For Social, Academic, And Emotional Behavior Risk Among Middle School Students, Melissa L. Brown
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Multi-informant universal screening tools leverage insights from multiple perspectives to paint a comprehensive picture of student risk across a variety of domains. However, many barriers exist to the appropriate and effective implementation of multi-informant universal screening within the school. When such screening tools are utilized without intentional consideration of students’ unique backgrounds and lived experiences, harmful outcomes may disproportionally impact marginalized and minoritized students. To address this, context-sensitive, identity-conscious approaches may improve the accuracy and equity of identifying students in need of support. This study investigated the role of identity concordance (i.e., alignment of teacher and student gender and race/ethnicity) …

Boundless Community: A Developing Disability Arts Movement, Sarah K. Benson, Khaldoun Hijazin, Alaa Qattam, Suha Khuffash
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Over several years, individual organizations in Jordan have been focused on increasing the participation of individuals with disabilities in the arts. Increasing inclusion can provide a powerful tool to create visibility, amplify marginalized voices and disrupt normative narratives. However, these isolated efforts had a limited impact until a cohesive effort borne by a burgeoning community of practice led to the first Amman Arts and Disability Summit. Bringing together youth, artists and gallery owners, the movement leaders are using models of social learning and communities of practice to create a more inclusive arts community. The movement stands on the precipice of …

Publications from the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy
Massachusetts has made notable strides in expanding access to affordable, quality, licensed child care and early education in recent years. Ongoing robust state investment in the Commonwealth Cares for Children Grant Program, activities of the Healey-Driscoll Inter Agency Early Education and Child Care Task Force, and increased income eligibility for child care financial assistance to families with moderate incomes, among other initiatives, all help address persistent barriers to quality education and care at a price families can afford.
Yet the supply of licensed child care for infants, toddlers, and preschool children remains a formidable challenge to meeting the child care …

Launch Skills: Virtual Career Camp Connects Rural Youth To Diverse Career Pathways, Caroline Homan, Meagan Hoffman
Journal of Youth Development
Rural youth often encounter persistent barriers in career and workforce readiness, including limited access to career exploration resources, mentorship, and post-secondary exposure, challenges that are compounded by geographic isolation and higher rates of rural poverty. To address these gaps, this manuscript describes the development and implementation of Launch Skills, a virtual career camp designed to broaden rural youths’ awareness of career pathways within food, agriculture, natural resources management, and human sciences (FANH). Grounded in Positive Youth Development principles, Launch Skills was collaboratively developed by North Dakota State University Extension and South Dakota State University Extension to provide flexible, accessible, and …

Journal of Youth Development
LGBTQIA+ youth face high rates of identity rejection and bullying, creating an urgent need for support and affirmation within oppressive societal structures. School environments can uniquely support LGBTQIA+ youth through after-school programming designed to provide positive community experiences. Using qualitative thematic analysis of personal stories from LGBTQIA+ youth (N=94), we examined what LGBTQIA+ youth envision as ideal support within after-school programming. Our analyses, informed by humanistic psychology principles, revealed eight major themes: good vibes, compassion and empathy, non-judgment and acceptance, multidimensional human connection, safety, proxy for home/family, adults and mentors, and altruism. Results indicate the need for warmth, safety, connection, …
