ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The increased traffic and heterogeneity in the 5G/B5G network require efficient radio resource management (RRM). However, the existing methods, such as GA and PSO, have poor convergence speed and require proper initial conditions. Additionally, learning-based methods have high computational complexity. Hence, in this paper, a novel AI-assisted Hybrid Channel Allocation (AI–HCA) framework is proposed by using a support vector regression (SVR)-based predictive initialization method and GA-PSO optimization. Simulation results using the 3GPP UMa channel model show that the proposed method has a 28% reduction in call blocking probability (CBP), a 15-25% enhancement in spectral efficiency (SE), and a 18-25% enhancement …

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The growing demand for low-cost, sustainable conductive filaments for additive manufacturing motivates the exploration of recycled polymer feedstocks as alternatives to virgin materials. However, the effects of prior thermal reprocessing on both the electrical performance and morphological integrity of recycled PLA (rPLA)–carbon black (CB) composite filaments remain insufficiently characterised, particularly under single-screw extrusion conditions. This study fabricates and characterises conductive filaments from virgin PLA and rPLA, each loaded with CB at 0.2, 0.6, and 1.0 wt%, using a low-cost desktop single-screw extruder. Melt blending was found to be essential for achieving continuous filament extrusion, as ball milling produced insufficient filler …

Spectroscopic And Structural Characterization Of Unexpected Porphyrinoid Byproducts Resulting From The Reaction Of A Cyclopentadiene Trialdehyde With N-Alkyltripyrranes, Kimberly Le, Gregory M. Ferrence, Timothy D. Lash

Faculty Publications – Chemistry

Acid-catalyzed condensation of N-alkyltripyrranes with a cyclopentadiene trialdehyde, followed by oxidation with aqueous ferric chloride solutions, gave unusual tripyrrolic byproducts in addition to previously reported carbaporphyrins and oxycarbaporphyrins. These stable nonaromatic structures incorporate aldehyde substituents, macrocyclic ketones, two conjugated pyrrole units, and a pyrrolo[1,2-a]pyrrole moiety. The NMR and UV-vis data were consistent with a nonaromatic system, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction confirmed that these structures are highly distorted. Structural characterization of a related aromatic carbaporphyrin triketone was also accomplished.

Detection And Quantification Of Spreading Depolarization In Drosophila Melanogaster Using High-Throughput, Wide-Field Brain Imaging, Wolfgang Stein, Allison L. Harris Jan 2026

Detection And Quantification Of Spreading Depolarization In Drosophila Melanogaster Using High-Throughput, Wide-Field Brain Imaging, Wolfgang Stein, Allison L. Harris

Faculty publications – Physics

Spreading depolarization (SD) is a ubiquitous neural phenomenon implicated in mammalian neurological disorders including cerebral ischemia, brain death, stroke, brain injury, and migraine, as well as in insect chill coma. During SD, a breakdown of ion homeostasis and a slowly spreading wave of neural depolarization leads to processing deficits, such as sensory disturbances and paralysis. Our protocols introduce high-throughput techniques using wide-field fluorescence brain imaging in Drosophila melanogaster larvae and adults to detect and quantify the spatial and temporal dynamics of SD and its initiation points. Two SD initiation techniques, rapid cooling and pharmacological manipulation, are detailed. The larval protocols …

A Nuclear Terrorism Scenario: Improvised Nuclear Weapons With 60%-Enriched Uranium, Matt Caplan Jan 2026

A Nuclear Terrorism Scenario: Improvised Nuclear Weapons With 60%-Enriched Uranium, Matt Caplan

Faculty publications – Physics

In this work we show that approximately 60–70 kg of 60%-enriched uranium can be used to build a crude nuclear weapon with a kiloton yield. While too large to fit on a missile, such a weapon could be delivered by a shipping container. This analysis is motivated by the June 2025 Israeli and US attacks on Iran, especially the bombings of the nuclear facilities at Natanz, Fordow and Isfahan. The Iranian stockpile of approximately 440 kg of 60%-enriched uranium is, at the time of writing, inaccessible to IAEA inspectors and stored in secret. The rapid clandestine relocation of this material …

Ai-Resistant Activities For Online And Large Enrollment Courses, Jason Bock, Eric Lemley Jan 2026

Ai-Resistant Activities For Online And Large Enrollment Courses, Jason Bock, Eric Lemley

2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Concurrent Session Papers

The rapid adoption of generative AI tools has fundamentally challenged traditional assessments in higher education, particularly in large-enrollment and fully asynchronous online courses where instructor presence and grading time are constrained. While many instructors have responded by restricting AI use or adopting detection tools, research increasingly shows that detection-based approaches are unreliable and labor-intensive. We propose a design-centered alternative: reshaping assessments so that AI use becomes insufficient, rather than prohibited.

Drawing on a systematic process of testing proposed and original assessment ideas directly against multiple generative AI models (using both simple and advanced prompting strategies), we present a curated playbook …

Eigenvalue Spacing Distributions And The Weak Disorder Limit For Random Schrodinger Operators, Kyle E. Hammer Jan 2026

Eigenvalue Spacing Distributions And The Weak Disorder Limit For Random Schrodinger Operators, Kyle E. Hammer

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

We study a collection of discrete Schrodinger Operators with random potentials through the lens of global and local eigenvalue spacings. We discuss the three models: the standard scaled disorder Anderson Model, the Anderson-Bernoulli Polymer Model, and the Discrete Fractional Laplacian Anderson Model. First, we discuss the scaled disorder case using the invariant measure and its application to the density of states in the weak disorder limit. We also prove the limit of the local and global eigenvalue spacings in the non random case, and demonstrate numerically how randomness affects the eigenvalue spacings. We then discuss a special family of random …

Spectral Properties And The Behavior Of The Current-Current Correlation Measure For The Luttinger-Sy Model, Jonathan Benoit Jan 2026

Spectral Properties And The Behavior Of The Current-Current Correlation Measure For The Luttinger-Sy Model, Jonathan Benoit

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

The Luttinger-Sy Model, sometimes referred to as the Pieces Model, is a Random Schrodinger Operator on L2(R) which is characterized in part by "pieces" whose endpoints are chosen by a Poisson Point Process. The Hamiltonian in this setting is then given as a direct sum of Laplacians with Dirchlet boundary conditions on each piece. In this work, we show several spectral properties of the Luttinger-Sy Model, including proving the deterministic spectrum is [0,infinity) and that a Wegner-type and Minami-type estimate both hold. Additionally, we show that the finite-volume Current-Current Correlation Measure is singular continuous with respect …

Student Conceptions Of Summation And Limits In The Definite Integral Following Quantitatively Focused Instruction, Caleb Daniel Holloway

2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Concurrent Session Papers

Recent studies have examined how students form productive conceptions of the definite integral and discussed techniques for promoting such conceptions. In this paper I present findings from interviews held with six students enrolled in second-semester calculus, four of whom had received quantitatively focused instruction on the definite integral. All six were chosen for their observed use of summation conceptions on definite integral problems, and here their conceptions are explored further. Additionally, we gain insight on their thinking regarding limits as related to the definite integral. The findings presented here add to our understanding of student thinking regarding the integral and …

Test Retakes In Introductory Math Courses, John Hird, Chris Mcclain

2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Poster Session Papers

In this poster, we describe the implementation of an exam retake model using specifications grading for math courses taken by non-STEM majors. This system was implemented by two faculty members over three years in two sequential courses. During that time, we tried several versions of allowed retakes, with varying restrictions on partial credit. Some of the challenges that we faced were scaling the system for use by different faculty members and with different courses, managing faculty workload on writing and grading multiple exams, and managing student expectations.

Research In Progress. Why Physiology Feels Hard: Supporting The Transition To Self-Directed Learning In Post-Secondary Physiology, Jaelyn Zoe Rohrbaugh, Mark Paternostro Jan 2026

Research In Progress. Why Physiology Feels Hard: Supporting The Transition To Self-Directed Learning In Post-Secondary Physiology, Jaelyn Zoe Rohrbaugh, Mark Paternostro

2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Poster Session Papers

Physiology is widely recognized as one of the most challenging courses for STEM students. Contributing factors include the discipline’s inherent complexity, instructional methods, and student preparedness, with both faculty and students identifying the nature of the discipline as the primary challenge. Many undergraduates enter college having experienced predominantly teacher-directed, pedagogical instruction, whereas success in college-level physiology requires self-directed, andragogical learning strategies. We hypothesize that students’ difficulties arise more from a lack of self-directed learning skills than from content complexity alone. To investigate this, we administered an anonymous survey to 340 students spanning freshman to professional levels, achieving a 93% completion …
