“I Don’T Want To Be The Bad Kind Of Special”: The Lived Experiences Of Autistic Youth In Extracurricular Programs In Their Communities, Catherine A. Sargent Ph.D.
Counseling and Psychology Dissertations
Autistic youth face barriers to participation and belonging in community settings. Historically, autism research has privileged researcher perspectives and deficit-based frameworks, often excluding the authentic voices of autistic individuals, particularly young people. This qualitative, phenomenological study sought to address that gap by exploring the lived experiences of autistic youth (ages 13–18) participating in extracurricular community programs in Massachusetts. Framed by critical disability theory, critical autism studies, ecological systems theory, and intersectionality, the study examined how autistic youth experience inclusion, connection, and self-expression within programs designed largely for neurotypical participants.
Seven autistic youths contributed to this research through participant-generated photographs and …

Context: Low bone density is common among lumbar fusion patients and increases the risks of pseudarthrosis, hardware failure, and revision. Teriparatide improves bone mass and fusion in osteoporosis, but its benefit in osteopenia or normal bone remains uncertain.
Aims: To evaluate the association between teriparatide exposure and (1) postoperative complications, (2) 90-day readmission, and (3) 2-year reoperation, stratified by bone health status (osteoporotic, osteopenic, and normal) in patients undergoing single-level lumbar fusion.
Setting and Design: A retrospective cohort study using the PearlDiver database from 2010 to 2021 identified patients undergoing single-level lumbar fusion.
Subjects and Methods: Patients on teriparatide were …
Becoming Tricky In Measure For Measure: Isabella's Silences Revisited, Laura Kolb
Becoming Tricky In Measure For Measure: Isabella's Silences Revisited, Laura Kolb
Publications and Research
At Measure for Measure’s start, Isabella is presented as radically self-same, possessed of “no tongue but one.” By its end, she has helped orchestrate a bed trick and publicly lied about her sexual history. Measure for Measure presents trickery as a vehicle for truth-telling in the face of injustice that is both situationally specific—created by Angelo’s hypocrisy—and utterly mundane: a feature of being a woman in the world. Ultimately, the play suggests that trickery is woven into the fabric of femininity itself: into the repertoire of linguistic, embodied, and behavioral strategies women like Isabella develop in navigating masculinist systems, …

Anoikis resistance, or evasion of cell death triggered by matrix detachment, is a hallmark of cancer cell survival and metastasis. We showed that repeated exposure to suspension stress followed by recovery under attached conditions leads to development of anoikis resistance. The acquisition of anoikis resistance was associated with enhanced invasion, chemoresistance, and immune evasion in vitro and distant metastasis in vivo. This acquired anoikis resistance was not genetic, persisting for a finite duration without detachment stress, but was sensitive to CDK8/19 mediator kinase inhibition that could also reverse anoikis resistance. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that CDK8/19 kinase inhibition induces bidirectional transcriptional …
Conundrums In The Realization Of Healthcare And Education Through Waqf In Nigeria, Isa Olawale Solahudeen
Conundrums In The Realization Of Healthcare And Education Through Waqf In Nigeria, Isa Olawale Solahudeen
Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Islamic Economics
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3 and 4 emphasize the importance of good health and quality education, respectively. However, based on available progress report released by Nigerian government, implementations of SDGs 3 (Good Health) and 4 (Quality Education) in the country were not promising. The unpleasant situation requires collaborative efforts of private sector. Meanwhile, waqf, an Islamic philanthropic instrument, has the potential to contribute significantly to the realization of these goals in Nigeria. Several conundrums hinder the effective utilization of waqf for healthcare and education. This paper identifies and examines some challenges ranging from lack of awareness, parochialism, religious …

Assessing Carbon Stability In Mangroves Soil By Comparing Two Fractionation Methods, A. Vázquez Marrero, B. A. Aguilar Enriquez, B. E. Rosenheim
Making Waves REU
- Mangroves are vital ecosystems that help shield coastlines, provide habitat for diverse species, and act as significant carbon sinks.
- To protect and sustain their carbon storage capacity, exploring soil carbon stabilization processes are crucial.
- Soil Organic Matter (SOM) consists of Particulate Organic Matter (POM) and Mineral- Associated Organic Matter (MAOM).
- MAOM is considered one of the most stable and protected forms of carbon storage in soil, but it is difficult to quantify.

Assessing Universal Basic Income: An Islamic Historical And Maqāṣidī Perspective, Abdulazeem Abozaid, Saqib Hafiz Khateeb
Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Islamic Economics
The constant concern for ensuring that the basic needs of every human are met has prompted various steps with an aim to promote equality. This concern has eventually led to an increasing demand to guarantee a reasonable standard of living. Some economists have recently revisited the concept of Universal Basic Income (UBI) that has caught the interest of some governments and policy makers. This paper investigates the concept of UBI from historical, legal (Islamic), and Maqāṣidī perspectives. It traces the conceptual origins of UBI back to the Islamic society since the early Islamic history. Adopting a conceptual–analytical methodology, the paper …

Bridging Governance Gaps In Islamic Banking: Palestine And Malaysia Compared, Murad Ayesh Ali Obaid, Abdulmajid Obaid Hasan Saleh, Fahd Mohammed Obad Al-Shaghdari
Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Islamic Economics
This study focuses on the most important governance issues that Islamic banking institutions in Palestine are experiencing and discusses what can be learnt from the Malaysian experience in helping to better govern Islamic banking institutions to improve governance efficiency, adherence to SharīÊ¿ah and regulatory oversight. Using a qualitative approach, research is based on the data collected from interviews with experts, document analysis and comparative case studies of both jurisdictions. The results indicate that lack of a centralised authority to monitor them, lack of professional expertise and the inadequate specified internal frameworks greatly constrain the effectiveness of governance in Palestinian Islamic …

Study design: Retrospective cohort study.
Objective: The purpose of our study is to identify CT characteristics of unilateral cervical spine facet fractures that are predictive of instability on MRI.
Summary of background data: Management of isolated subaxial cervical spine facet fractures is typically based on the neurological status of the patient and perceived stability of the injury. It has been shown that the degree of ligamentous instability can help predict instability and need for surgery, and MRIs are increasingly being used to evaluate these injuries, but not always. While there are studies that evaluate radiographic characteristics of facet fractures on …
Serendipity In Psychiatric Discoveries: Historical Lessons And Future Imperatives For Clinical Observation, Stanley Lyndon, Vineeth P John
Serendipity In Psychiatric Discoveries: Historical Lessons And Future Imperatives For Clinical Observation, Stanley Lyndon, Vineeth P John
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Aims and method: Serendipity has driven many of psychiatry's most important treatments, yet contemporary systems may undermine clinicians' ability to notice and develop unexpected therapeutic effects. This selective narrative review synthesises landmark discovery stories, conceptual accounts of serendipity and contemporary case examples to clarify how chance observations become robust advances.
Results: Across historical and modern examples, serendipitous discoveries consistently reflected the interaction of unexpected events with prepared observers working in supportive institutional and research systems. We identify current barriers created by standardised care, funding and trial structures, and professional fragmentation, and outline a multi-level framework for cultivating serendipity through phenomenological …
