Despite considerable advances in identifying risk factors for obesity, gaps remain in our understanding about its etiology. Genetic variants explain only a small portion of variation in obesity-related traits such as body mass index (BMI). Epigenetic regulation, which controls gene expression and is influenced by environmental and genetic factors, may account for additional variability in BMI. Epigenetic studies of BMI have largely been conducted in European ancestry populations, despite the disproportionate burden of obesity in African Americans (AAs). We conducted a sex-stratified BMI epigenome-wide association study meta-analysis in AA participants from the Jackson Heart Study (n = 1,604) and …

The Relevance Of Climate Change And Sustainability In Nursing Education: A Cross-Sectional Study Of Students’ Perspectives, Jennie Aronsson, Marie Elf, Paul Warwick, Riccardo Lomartire, Anna Anåker

Individual Open Access Articles

Background: As climate change continues to challenge global health, nursing education must evolve to prepare future nurses for the impacts on care delivery and promote sustainable practices within the healthcare system which is itself a contributor to the climate crisis through emissions and waste. In this study we aimed to i) explore undergraduate nursing students’ attitudes towards and awareness of climate change and sustainability issues and its inclusion in nursing education at a Swedish university, and ii) explore differences in awareness and attitudes across student groups in different semesters.

Methods: In this cross-sectional descriptive research study, nursing students from six …

Recently, MXene-conducting polymer hybrids have emerged as promising electrode materials for sustainable energy storage applications, owing to their impressive electrochemical properties. Herein, we report the synthesis of vanadium carbide MXene nanoparticles (V2CTx-MXene) using innovative Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) technology followed by exfoliation steps. The V2CTx nanoparticles were incorporated with PANI (MXene-PANI) by electrochemical polymerization of aniline monomers in the presence of V2CTx nanolayers, to be used as a highly efficient material for charge storage application. PANI nanofibers form a conductive and porous architecture, which intercalates the V2CTx nanoflakes. The resulting structure increases the interlayer spacing …

Energetics Analysis Of Solitary Waves Using A Multi-Layer Model, Hunter Boswell, Frank D. Han, Guirong Yan, Wouter Mostert Jan 2026

Energetics Analysis Of Solitary Waves Using A Multi-Layer Model, Hunter Boswell, Frank D. Han, Guirong Yan, Wouter Mostert

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study investigates the performance of a vertically-Lagrangian multi-layer model on numerically simulating shoaling and breaking two-dimensional solitary waves during both the breaking and post-breaking processes. The energy dissipation of the breaking event for the multi-layer waves is analyzed and compared to prior direct numerical simulation work with the same bathymetric and wave cases. It shows very similar data collapse to shallow-water inertial theory. For post-breaking behavior, bore characteristics are compared to an experimental study of bores formed from breaking solitary waves and similar results are found. While the multi-layer method was not found to behave sufficiently well for direct …

Retention On Buprenorphine For Opioid Use Disorder In Justice-Involved Individuals: A Retrospective Cohort Study, Andrea Yatsco, Francine R Vega, Audrey Sarah Cohen, Marylou Cardenas-Turanzas, James R Langabeer, Tiffany Champagne-Langabeer Jan 2026

Retention On Buprenorphine For Opioid Use Disorder In Justice-Involved Individuals: A Retrospective Cohort Study, Andrea Yatsco, Francine R Vega, Audrey Sarah Cohen, Marylou Cardenas-Turanzas, James R Langabeer, Tiffany Champagne-Langabeer

Criminal justice system (CJS) involvement is common among individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD), yet limited research examines retention in medications for OUD (MOUD) within community settings. This study assessed whether CJS involvement predicted retention on buprenorphine/naloxone and explored related demographic and clinical factors. A retrospective cohort included adults (n = 367) enrolled in a low-barrier outpatient MOUD program in Texas (January 2022–April 2024). CJS involvement was identified from program records. Retention was measured as the number of continuous days with buprenorphine/naloxone prescriptions. Analyses used univariate tests, logistic regression, and nonparametric kernel regression. Nearly one-quarter (24.8%) were CJS-involved. Retention at …

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Limited studies have examined pandemic-related stressors among urban refugee youth in low and middle-income humanitarian countries (LMICs), such as Uganda. We explored the lived experience of COVID-19-related stressors among urban refugee youth in Kampala, Uganda. We analyzed qualitative data (text messages, WhatsApp chats, photos) collected in an interactive mobile health intervention with 346 refugee youth aged 16–24 in Kampala. Findings revealed stressors across socioecological levels: individual (e.g., financial-related distress), social (e.g., limited social interactions), community (e.g., food insecurity), and policy (e.g., unprecedented lockdowns). Findings can inform social work organization pandemic preparedness strategies for economic empowerment and social cohesion with youth.
