Removal Strategies For Staphylococcus Epidermidis Biofilms, Alexander Watson Sep 2026

Removal Strategies For Staphylococcus Epidermidis Biofilms, Alexander Watson

Research from the Berry Summer Thesis Institute, 2026

Bacterial biofilms are surface-attached communities of bacteria that are notoriously difficult to fully eradicate. This is especially a problem in the healthcare field, as Staphylococcus epidermidis, a commensal bacteria normally present on human skin, can enter the bloodstream through biofilms on medical devices and cause infections. This research project aims to discover how to best eliminate bacterial biofilms. Biofilms were first grown on stainless steel discs, in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. After baselines were established, treatments of papain, chlorhexidine digluconate, or sodium fluoride were applied to hydrated 5-day biofilms. After chlorhexidine digluconate was proven to be effective, new …

Stretch-Dependent Permittivity Of Vhb 4910 In Uniaxial Tension, Samuel A. Camealy

Research from the Berry Summer Thesis Institute, 2026

Dielectric elastomers are soft electro-active materials that deform under applied electric fields, making them compelling candidates for next-generation sensing, actuation, and energy-generation technologies. Simulation-based design and real-time control of such devices require constitutive models with genuine predictive capability, which is difficult given the highly nonlinear, tightly coupled electro-mechanical response of dielectric elastomers. A persistent open question in the community is whether the permittivity of neat, unfilled dielectric elastomers is stretch-dependent. Existing measurements are largely confined to biaxial loading, and the comparatively few studies under uniaxial tension are limited to modest stretches (λ ≤ 6), a constraint likely arising from edge …
