Retrieval Strategies For Embolized Left Atrial Appendage Closure Devices, Usama Sadiq, Muneeba Ali, Stacey Damito, Maxwell Ambrosino, Muhammad Sabri, Muhammad Ahmad Sadiq, Muhammad Hamza Sadiq, Richard Kovach, Sheena Rastogi, Muhammad Raza

Abington Jefferson Health Papers

BACKGROUND: Device embolization (DE) is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication of left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO). As landmark trials broaden the eligible population for LAAO, operator preparedness for DE management becomes increasingly critical.

CASE SUMMARY: We present 4 cases of LAAO DE managed with distinct retrieval strategies: 1) open surgical retrieval with concurrent AtriClip ligation for an endothelialized left atrial device; 2) sequential transseptal then retrograde arterial snaring for intraprocedural migration to the abdominal aorta; 3) transseptal retrieval using a dedicated ONO system with cerebral embolic protection for partial left atrial dislodgment; and 4) retrograde large-bore arterial retrieval for …

Presence And Impact Of Herbicides On Intertidal Benthic Communities, Marco Sanderson Aug 2026

Presence And Impact Of Herbicides On Intertidal Benthic Communities, Marco Sanderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The growing reliance and widespread use of herbicides on a global scale is negatively affecting non-targeted biota and, consequently, their ecosystems. Herbicide levels and their impacts have been extensively researched around the world in riverine and lacustrine ecosystems. However, studies of the levels and effects of herbicides on coastal intertidal benthic communities have been lacking. This study focused on testing spectrophotometric methodologies for herbicides (atrazine and glyphosate) and documenting their presence and levels in sediment, water, and biotic tissue of intertidal coastal beaches and marshes of Waties Island and Singleton Swash, Horry County, South Carolina. A laboratory microcosm was employed …

Trophic Ecology Of A South Carolina Estuarine Predator Guild, Shane John Molander Aug 2026

Trophic Ecology Of A South Carolina Estuarine Predator Guild, Shane John Molander

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Estuaries are among the world’s most productive ecosystems in the world and are characterized by the convergence of two distinct habitats, creating a mosaic of environmental conditions from inland rivers to the nearshore ocean. Many fishes occupy estuaries during various life stages for growth, reproduction, or foraging, and may reside in them seasonally. The co-occurrence of species, particularly upper-trophic level carnivores, can result in competitive interactions for prey resources within a shared environment. Identifying the degree of these interactions as well as understanding basal energy consumption can inform food web dynamics and how overlapping species use shared spaces. I used …

The Varieties Of Precaution: Which Risks, Whose Attitudes?, Tomasz Żuradzki Aug 2026

The Varieties Of Precaution: Which Risks, Whose Attitudes?, Tomasz Żuradzki

Animal Sentience

The Edge of Sentience offers an ambitious and timely institutional framework for proportionate precaution under uncertainty about sentience. Its systematic treatment of empirical and theoretical uncertainty across diverse cases is a major contribution. Focusing on the problem of identifying and weighing different risks when designing proportionate precautions, this commentary suggests three areas in which Birch’s framework could be developed further: a more domain-sensitive justification of the priority given to avoiding under-attribution; a clearer distinction among competing forms of risk aversion and their divergent policy implications; and a fuller explanation of how the framework generates different recommendations across cases.

Credence Goods In Markets With Collective Reputation: Nature Of Equilibria And The Value Of Certification, Erin Krupka, Thomas P. Lyon, Arnab Mitra Aug 2026

Credence Goods In Markets With Collective Reputation: Nature Of Equilibria And The Value Of Certification, Erin Krupka, Thomas P. Lyon, Arnab Mitra

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Fraud can cause markets for credence goods to collapse, but collective reputation has been suggested as a potential solution, especially when buyer valuations for quality are high. We develop a discrete model of a market for label credence goods and provide conditions for no-fraud equilibria based on collective reputation. We identify conditions under which all equilibria may be asymmetric or involve mixed strategies and hence sellers may face coordination problems. Our analysis suggests such coordination problems are the greatest when the size of the high-quality market is approximately half of the overall market (that incorporates both high- and low-quality goods), …

Llm-Integrated Anomaly Detection For Iot Networks: Framework Structure, Mamoon M. Saeed, Rashid A. Saeed, Salah Hagahmoodi, Rania A. Mokhtar, Khalid Hamid

Baghdad Science Journal

Internet of Things (IoT) devices are vulnerable to zero-day attacks because most of them have weak or no inherent security due to the resource constraints of the devices. This weakness underscores the growing need for anomaly-based intrusion detection systems tailored to IoT networks. Nevertheless, general anomaly detection traditionally has a high number of false positives that drain analysts' time. Also, a semantic difference exists between the system's results and the operators' interpretations. We introduce a machine learning-based framework to tackle these issues in traditional systems in this paper by combining large language models (LLMs). Our model is effective in identifying …

Video Steganography Based On Invertible Neural Networks With Densenet And U-Net Features, Noor Fahem Sahib, Soukaena Hassan Hashem, Ekhlas Falih Naser

Baghdad Science Journal

The increased rate of cyber threats such as fraud and other forms of attack, including phishing, malware, and denial-of-service attacks, has led to a growing demand for secure methods to ensure the security of sensitive information that is transferred among users. Video steganography has become a very important element in dealing with these security issues, as communication has become more dependent on multimedia content. Hiding information is now an area that is being developed very fast with the introduction of Deep Learning (DL)-based steganography methods. This framework introduces Vid_Steg_DenseUNet, a video steganography method which efficiently extracts multi-level features using edge-preserving …

Qrc-Pso: A Quad-Module Ring-Competitive Pso Algorithm For Coverage Optimization In Wireless Sensor Networks, Yu-Xuan Zhou, Shao-Qiang Ye, Di-Wen Kang, Xue-Wei Liu, Kai-Qing Zhou Aug 2026

Qrc-Pso: A Quad-Module Ring-Competitive Pso Algorithm For Coverage Optimization In Wireless Sensor Networks, Yu-Xuan Zhou, Shao-Qiang Ye, Di-Wen Kang, Xue-Wei Liu, Kai-Qing Zhou

Baghdad Science Journal

Coverage optimization in WSNs is critical for disaster warning and industrial monitoring, but is challenging due to multi-modality and high-dimensionality. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) offers fast convergence and simple parameter tuning, yet suffers from premature convergence and parameter sensitivity in multi-peak problems. To address these issues, we propose a Quad-module Ring-Competitive PSO (QRC-PSO). It comprises four heterogeneous subgroups with distinct parameter configurations for global exploration, local exploitation, balanced search, and perturbation enhancement. Subgroups evolve independently but exchange elite particles via a ring-topology migration strategy: every 20 iterations, the best three particles of each subgroup move clockwise to the next subgroup …

A New Reptile Search Algorithm For An Intelligent Video Retrieval System, Ansam Nazar Younis, Fawziya Mahmood Ramo Aug 2026

A New Reptile Search Algorithm For An Intelligent Video Retrieval System, Ansam Nazar Younis, Fawziya Mahmood Ramo

Baghdad Science Journal

The increasing volume of videos produced and shared via smart devices has made indexing and retrieving them a clear challenge. Current retrieval systems, such as specialized video retrieval systems, rely on text-based searches, which often misrepresent and frequently result in erroneous descriptions of the requested video, particularly when it comes to videos about certain specialities like security or medical procedures that are hard to describe. As a result, we developed a model that handles information-rich video queries, making it easier to find related videos that are specifically relevant to the user's needs. This paper proposes a new method for indexing …

Who Decides The Dead? Interpreting Washington’S Disposition Of Remains Statute, Wyatt Young Aug 2026

Who Decides The Dead? Interpreting Washington’S Disposition Of Remains Statute, Wyatt Young

Seattle University Law Review

Washington’s disposition-of-remains statute, RCW 68.50.160, is designed to honor a decedent’s expressed wishes regarding the control and disposition of their body after death. Yet recent litigation reveals a critical gap between the statute’s intent-centered design and its practical enforceability. In Larotonda v. Blackburn, a trial court acknowledged that irreparable harm would occur if a decedent’s burial wishes were ignored but nonetheless denied relief on the grounds that the individual designated to carry out those wishes lacked standing. The result was a legal paradox: a statute that recognizes decedent autonomy in theory but withholds any meaningful mechanism for its enforcement …

Legal Malpractice In Washington: Use Of The Rules Of Professional Conduct, Angelo Tadrous Aug 2026

Legal Malpractice In Washington: Use Of The Rules Of Professional Conduct, Angelo Tadrous

Seattle University Law Review

Legal malpractice claims are difficult to prove. They are difficult to prove because many jurisdictions require that a plaintiff prove that, but for the lawyer’s misconduct, the client would have fared better. Thus, in a malpractice suit, a plaintiff must try a case within a case. Despite this difficulty, many jurisdictions prohibit the use of the Rules of Professional Conduct when litigating a malpractice case. Washington State is one of these jurisdictions. The Washington Supreme Court held in Hizey v. Carpenter that the Rules of Professional Conduct may not be referred to during trial. This Note argues that this prohibition …

Converting Buildings Is Hard: Why Seattle’S Municipal Government Should Streamline Commercial-To-Residential Conversions, Tyler M. King Aug 2026

Converting Buildings Is Hard: Why Seattle’S Municipal Government Should Streamline Commercial-To-Residential Conversions, Tyler M. King

Seattle University Law Review

The conversion of commercial buildings into housing is a promising solution to the growing housing crisis in many urban areas. However, despite its potential benefits, the process of repurposing commercial spaces is often stymied by complex zoning codes, high conversion costs, and bureaucratic hurdles. This Article argues that the local and state governments in Seattle should adopt more streamlined policies and offer greater incentives to developers to facilitate these conversions. By reforming zoning regulations and providing targeted financial support, municipalities can reduce the barriers to conversion and unlock the potential of underutilized commercial properties. This article examines the legal and …

Translational Initiative To Minimize Childhood Hemiparesis After Asymmetrical Perinatal Brain Injury, Susan V. Duff, Emily Garavatti, Terrie Inder Aug 2026

Translational Initiative To Minimize Childhood Hemiparesis After Asymmetrical Perinatal Brain Injury, Susan V. Duff, Emily Garavatti, Terrie Inder

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research

The purpose of this perspective paper is to present a translational approach aimed at identifying the critical periods in brain development during which to provide neuroprotective and neurorestorative strategies, followed by prehensile training, to minimize hemiparesis and foster skill acquisition after asymmetrical perinatal brain injury (APBI). We contend that hemiparesis could be minimized after APBI through a multimodal sequential approach based on timely implementation of evidence-based intervention strategies. If APBI is identified early, neuroprotective techniques can be used in the first 10 days of life to minimize cell death. This can be followed in the next 3 months by the …

How Does The Science Of Reading Approach Enhance Small Reading Group Instruction?, Destiny M. Morman Aug 2026

How Does The Science Of Reading Approach Enhance Small Reading Group Instruction?, Destiny M. Morman

Graduate Teacher Education

This paper examined how the Science of Reading (SOR) practices enhance student success in small-group reading. Specifically, the purpose of this research is to analyze which SOR-aligned instructional practices are the most beneficial for promoting student success in small-group settings and to examine practices that may be less effective. Effective reading practices are crucial for small-group instruction (Smith et al., 2022). When instruction is strategically designed around students’ specific reading needs, educators can provide a more targeted and personalized support that may be difficult to achieve during whole-group instruction. During small-group learning, teachers can differentiate instruction by aligning lessons with …

Longevity and stress resilience require precise coordination of gene expression programs across tissues. Here, we demonstrate that overexpression of the chromatin reader bet-1 specifically in neurons of Caenorhabditis elegans promotes organismal longevity and stress resistance via cell-nonautonomous signaling. Neuronal bet-1 elicits a neurotransmitter-dependent signal that activates the conserved stress-responsive transcription factor HSF-1 in the intestine, enhancing proteostasis, oxidative stress resistance, metabolic remodeling, and immune defense. Life span extension by neuronal bet-1 requires both hsf-1 and daf-16 in neurons but only requires hsf-1 in peripheral tissues. Using bulk RNA sequencing, we reveal distinct prolongevity pathways that include enhanced heat-shock response, proteostasis, …

Heritable Transgenic Schistosomes As A Living Platform For Sars-Cov-2 Neutralizing Antibody Secretion, Wannaporn Ittiprasert, Bruce A Rosa, Sergej Djuranovic, Makedonka Mitreva, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

We report the generation and propagation of not only the first heritable transgenic schistosome line but also a line that secretes a functional therapeutic protein in vivo. Using multiplexed CRISPR/Cas-mediated homology-directed knock-in targeted to a predicted genomic safe-harbor, we inserted a VHH-IgG1 Fc (termed C5-Fc) transgene into Schistosoma mansoni eggs. Single-miracidium infections of Biomphalaria glabrata yielded parental P0 lines; serial passage through snail and mouse hosts produced an F2 cohort in which all parasites carried the C5-Fc transgene and secreted C5-Fc into the murine venous circulation. Molecular assays confirmed chromosomal insertion, germline transmission and systemic secretion. Sera from mice harboring …

Altered Postnatal Chromatin Development In The Nucleus Accumbens Primes Enduring Stress Sensitivity, Rebekah L Rashford, Lisa Z Fang, Michael Deberardine, Hye Ji J Kim, Laura W Hirschfield, Ella Cervi, Mason R Barrett, Jeremy M Thompson, Meaghan C Creed, Catherine Jensen Peña

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Early life stress (ELS) sensitizes individuals to subsequent stressors to increase lifetime risk for psychiatric disorders. Within the nucleus accumbens (NAc)-a key limbic and reward-associated brain region-ELS sensitizes both cellular and transcriptional response to later stress, which are programmed by enduring epigenetic changes. Among the histone modifications persistently enriched by ELS in NAc is H3K4me1, which is associated with open chromatin and epigenetic priming of genomic enhancers. Here, we sought to determine whether H3K4me1 enrichment in NAc was sufficient to prime cellular and behavioral responses to adult stress. Viral-mediated overexpression of the histone H3 monomethyltransferase

Software Defined Swarms, Nathan Benz, Scott Miller, Jeff Huang, Sonny Hwang, Todd Sarshad, Edmund De La Cruz, Thomas Magesarcher

Small Satellite Conference

The Starling Extended Mission has demonstrated the transformative potential of software-defined architectures in multi-spacecraft swarms. Building on the original Starling mission, which validated autonomous coordination and networking among small satellites, the extended phase focused on adaptability—updating onboard payload software and software-defined radios (SDRs) to enable entirely new experiments without hardware modifications. This capability signals a new approach: spacecraft swarms can evolve post-launch to meet emerging scientific and operational objectives.

Central to this extension was the deployment of new software enabling two-way ranging and “reverse GPS” source identification using raw radio frequency (RF) signals. Traditionally, ranging and navigation rely on pre-integrated …

Towards Designing And Performing Biological Sex: Explorations Of The Cyborg And The Inanimate, Beja Puskas Aug 2026

Towards Designing And Performing Biological Sex: Explorations Of The Cyborg And The Inanimate, Beja Puskas

Theatre and Dance Honors Projects

While gender has been largely debunked as a form of performance, biological sex remains an irreducible point of departure. This essay challenges biological sex as a category through the Foucauldian lens of bio-power and technologies of the self. It merges findings from interviews surrounding intersectionally marginalized experiences with menstruation with trans and disability studies. Utilizing Mel Chen’s theory of animacies, and Margrit Shildrick’s human-technology amalgamation theory, this essay blurs the biological-artificial binary. While there are obstacles, limiting what is biologically possible for humans, the body can be significantly augmented through imagination, body modification, and the invention of newly gendered practices.

Esa Scout Hydrognss Early Mission Results, Martin Unwin, Alex Da Silva Curiel, Ben Stern, Jean-Pascal Lejault, Nazzareno Pierdicca

Small Satellite Conference

The ESA Scout HydroGNSS mission demonstrates a new generation of GNSS reflectometry (GNSS R) capabilities for hydrological climate monitoring from small satellites. HydroGNSS measures soil moisture, freeze–thaw state, inundation, wetlands and above ground biomass by exploiting both traditional incoherent Delay Doppler Maps (DDMs) and several innovative signal types not previously available from spaceborne GNSS R missions. Early in orbit results confirm successful acquisition of signals from Galileo, dual polarisation measurements, coherent complex channel data and reflections at the second GNSS frequency (L5/E5a). These enhanced measurements exhibit stronger than predicted performance and are expected to significantly improve retrievals of climate relevant …

Unsustainable Stories: Agricultural Knowledge On The Great Plains, 1880-1934, Philomena Shuffelton-Sobe

History Honors Projects

This thesis explores stories about how people farmed and learned about farming on the Great Plains from 1880-1920 through three inter-connected narratives: the Allotment system, agricultural education programs at federal Indian Boarding Schools, and the rapid rise and fall of the Dry Farming movement. These systems were built on stories about how people should live with and on the land that promoted unsustainable, destructive ways of farming and knowledge production. This scholarship places Assimilation Era agricultural education for Native and non-Native farmers within the context of the increasing reliance on systems and science and the institutionalization of agricultural knowledge.
