Mitogenomic And Physiological Comparison Between Wild And Domesticated Congeners, Nicholas Enriquez
Mitogenomic And Physiological Comparison Between Wild And Domesticated Congeners, Nicholas Enriquez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Domestication is a process in which wild populations are morphologically and/or behaviorally manipulated through selective breeding to become optimized for living in captivity. Consequently, many traits become quickly and significantly diverged from their ancestral, wild lineages, a process known as part of domestication syndrome. Captive breeding of mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) was one of the last major successful domestication events resulting in dozens of recognized breeds today. Many breeds were optimized for either ornamental or agricultural purposes (i.e., meat and/or egg production), but the game-farm mallard was specifically bred for sport hunting. In North America, the use of game-farm mallards to …
Development Of A High-Throughput Framework For Studying Choice-Movement Dynamics In Freely Moving Rats Across Motivational And Pharmacological States, Atanu Giri
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This thesis develops and applies high-throughput behavioral assays and analysis pipelines to study how external contingencies and internal state shape rodent decision-making. First, it introduces RECORD (Reward-Cost in Rodent Decision-making), a modular platform that combines 3D-printed arenas, microcontroller-based control, and closed-loop trial structure to deliver graded rewards and costs in a foraging-like environment. RECORD supports scalable data collection across multiple arenas and a software stack for parsing, databasing, and extracting spatiotemporal behavioral features and psychometric choice functions. Using this framework, the thesis quantifies how animals integrate sucrose reward magnitude with aversive light cost, revealing structured individual differences and sex-dependent movement …
Public Art And The Future Of Remembrance In Contested Spaces, Rebecca Ann Munoz
Public Art And The Future Of Remembrance In Contested Spaces, Rebecca Ann Munoz
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation examines the memorial landscape of El Paso, Texas as a contested site of public memory, cultural identity, and community representation. Situated at the U.S.-Mexico border, El Paso functions as a palimpsest of layered histories shaped by colonization, militarization, and ongoing negotiations of belonging. Drawing on memory rhetoric and composition studies, and art history, the paper raises critical questions about community engagement, representational equity, and the politics of visibility in public art processes. The paper ultimately calls for a deeper examination of the rhetorical strategies and institutional frameworks that shape memorial meaning-making at the local level, with broader implications …
Mapping The Lateral Hypothalamic Area: Chemoarchitecture, Connectivity, And Activation In Motivated Learning And Reward, Vanessa Inez Navarro
Mapping The Lateral Hypothalamic Area: Chemoarchitecture, Connectivity, And Activation In Motivated Learning And Reward, Vanessa Inez Navarro
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The lateral hypothalamic area (LHA) is a large and complex hypothalamic region with diverse functions across four main rostrocaudal divisions. Despite its size and diversity, disagreements over how to define LHA subdivisions (e.g., Swanson atlas lists 17 subdivisions) make it challenging to fully characterize its structure and function. Across these subregions, neuronal connectivity varies, indicating they serve different behavioral functions. Consistent with this, particular LHA neuronal pathways have been linked to reward-related responses, emphasizing the region's roles in motivation, feeding, and cognition. Current approaches to classifying the LHA have primarily relied on neurochemical markers or gene-directed manipulations, often without integrating …
Computational Studies Of Alpha-Lactalbumin Binding To Perfluorodecanoic Acid, Randhal Smith Ramirez Orozco
Computational Studies Of Alpha-Lactalbumin Binding To Perfluorodecanoic Acid, Randhal Smith Ramirez Orozco
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This thesis investigates the structural and thermodynamic interactions between Perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) and bovine alpha-lactalbumin (ALAC), a critical milk protein essential for infant nutrition. The primary objectives were to computationally determine the most probable binding sites of PFDA to ALAC and to quantify the strength of these interactions alongside the structural changes they induce. This study addresses a critical gap in understanding how persistent environmental contaminants like PFDA are recruited and transported by nutritional proteins within the milk matrix. The methodology integrated high-throughput molecular docking with long-range, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to provide a dynamic characterization of the ALAC-PFDA complex. …
High-Resolution Mapping Of Brainstem Feeding Circuits: A Framework For Targeted Neuroscience Tools, Geronimo Tapia
High-Resolution Mapping Of Brainstem Feeding Circuits: A Framework For Targeted Neuroscience Tools, Geronimo Tapia
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The neural control of energy balance is mediated in part by distributed brainstem circuits that integrate metabolic, visceral, and hormonal signals to coordinate appropriate motivated behaviors and autonomic responses. Despite extensive study, the precise neuroanatomical architecture regulating metabolism remains incompletely defined within standardized atlas frameworks. This work addresses that gap through complementary studies examining an acute glycemic challenge methodology known to stimulate feeding, the acute delivery of an anorexigenic-associated neurohormone, and the chemoarchitecture of a major feeding-related region, the parabrachial nucleus. First, utilizing 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) induced glucoprivation, we map the rapid response of dorsal medullary neuronal populations with high spatial …
Determining Zap-70 Signaling Pathways Mediated By Ccr7 In Tcr T Cell Activation, Vivian Torres
Determining Zap-70 Signaling Pathways Mediated By Ccr7 In Tcr T Cell Activation, Vivian Torres
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Activation of T lymphocytes is the main event that occurs in the adaptive immune response after engagement of the T cell receptor (TCR) with the peptide of the major histocompatibility complex (pMHC) molecules that are demonstrated by antigen presenting cells [1]. A key step in this process is the recruitment and activation of the zeta chain associated protein of 70 kDa (ZAP-70). ZAP-70 couples TCR engagement to downstream intracellular signaling pathways through phosphorylation of tyrosine residues within intracellular tyrosine activation motifs (ITAMs) [2]. Although there have been extensive studies on the signaling response through TCR activation, the regulatory influence of …
From Soils To Plants And Back Again: The Effects Of Small Mammals On Arctic Ecosystem Processes, Andrew Uccello
From Soils To Plants And Back Again: The Effects Of Small Mammals On Arctic Ecosystem Processes, Andrew Uccello
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Herbivores are essential drivers of above and belowground processes in ecosystems across the globe. Through their effects on ecosystem processes, herbivores represent a critical force shaping ecosystems undergoing rapid environmental changes, such as the Arctic. However, there are critical gaps in our knowledge of herbivores as drivers of Arctic ecosystem processes, especially concerning the role of small mammal herbivores. While previous research has made significant strides in identifying the role of small mammal herbivores as both top down and bottom up forces in Arctic ecosystems, we still lack an understanding that explicitly connects plant and soil responses to herbivory, especially …
Soil Microbial Responses To Artifical Light At Night, Randall L. Walker
Soil Microbial Responses To Artifical Light At Night, Randall L. Walker
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Global change, driven by both natural processes and human activities, has significantly transformed ecosystems. Urbanization and artificial light at night (ALAN) are key contributors, disrupting natural light cycles and influencing biological rhythms, biodiversity, and ecosystem functions. Thus far, there remains a gap in knowledge of how soil ecosystems are impacted by ALAN. This study uses a laboratory incubation to investigate the effects of ALAN on soil microbial communities and functions across urban and natural ecosystems. Briefly, soil was collected from eight sites around El Paso, Texas and neighboring New Mexico representing urban and rural light exposure. Soil was then subjected …

Physical Interactions Shape Collective Thermoregulatory Behavior In Honey Bees, Casey E. Lambert, Kyara Vazquez, Zachary P. Nelson, Chelsea N. Cook
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Social animals exhibit complex, coordinated behaviors that can drive significant environmental change. Within groups, individuals sense their environment and share information to facilitate collective action. Direct physical contact is a key mechanism of communication in many social species, yet its role in organizing collective behaviors remains underexplored. Here, we investigate how tactile interactions influence thermoregulatory fanning behavior in honey bees (Apis mellifera), a critical collective response to environmental stress. By reducing the ability of bees to engage in physical contact, we demonstrated that direct tactile interactions are necessary to initiate and coordinate fanning. Increasing social density by spatially …
The Impact Of Place-Based Education Professional Development On Faculty Identity And Perceptions Of Nature-Culture Dichotomies, Reyt Middleton
The Impact Of Place-Based Education Professional Development On Faculty Identity And Perceptions Of Nature-Culture Dichotomies, Reyt Middleton
Master's Theses
This qualitative study analyzes how implementing place-based education (PBE) in undergraduate coursework shapes faculty identity narratives and nature–culture positionalities across conceptual lenses of past, present, and future. Three faculty members at a regional Mississippi university engaged in a PBE professional development program; narratively driven pre- and post-implementation interviews were given to participants, then examined via thematic analysis. Framed primarily through lenses of constructivism, with support from critical pedagogy of place, relational and ecological epistemologies, and scholarship on faculty identity, this study posits two research questions—1: How does teaching PBE influence faculty identity narratives across past, present, and future temporalities? 2: …

Teacher Stories In A Place-Based Science Education Program In The Trans-Nueces Region, Brian Craig Gabrysch
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study examines the emerging professional narratives of five educators involved in the Integrated Oceans Program at a coastal South Texas school district situated within the Trans-Nueces region. Guided by the central research question—What are the emerging teacher stories from a place-based science program in the Trans-Nueces region, and what do we learn about place-based science education from the narratives?—the study employs narrative inquiry methodology following Riessman (2008) and Bruner (1985) to investigate how educators construct meaning from their practice within a program anchored to the Laguna Madre wetlands ecosystem.
The theoretical framework integrates interpretivism (Benton & Craib, 2010), …

2nd Place Research Paper: Shaping The Ape: Storytelling, Cultural Reflection, And Boundary Negotiation In Human-Ape Zoo Encounters, Abigail Bond Halling
2nd Place Research Paper: Shaping The Ape: Storytelling, Cultural Reflection, And Boundary Negotiation In Human-Ape Zoo Encounters, Abigail Bond Halling
Kevin and Tam Ross Undergraduate Research Prize
The typical Western zoo functions as a unique environment in which animals are frequently positioned as subjects of education and entertainment through the medium of storytelling. In this sense, the zoological institution can also be read as an extension of popular Western constructions surrounding nonhuman animals, particularly those who are symbolically charged characters in our collective imaginary– the great apes. Given the morphological, behavioral, and psychological similarities between humans and other great apes (chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans), nonhuman great ape enclosures at the Western zoo become spaces where humans are most radically confronted with navigating the boundaries of the “human-animal …
Additively Constructed Concrete Culverts (Acc), Eugene Kwabena Assuah-Damoah
Additively Constructed Concrete Culverts (Acc), Eugene Kwabena Assuah-Damoah
Theses and Dissertations
Rural culvert systems in cold regions like North Dakota face rising replacement needs due to aging infrastructure, harsh deterioration, and limited precast supply. Additive construction with concrete (ACC) offers promise but is constrained by proprietary mix designs, limited validation for non-linear geometries such as ring-type pipes, and challenges in reinforcement integration. This study addresses these gaps through three efforts. First, a non-proprietary mix (MIX7, w/c = 0.37) using local materials achieved optimal printability (190–200 mm flow) and 28‑day strengths of 55–60 MPa; full-scale 18‑inch pipes met ASTM C76 Class II/III requirements. Second, literature shows ACC permanent formwork performance depends on …
Climate Messages In An Ai-Integrated Experiment: Interpretive Divergence, Policy Support, And A New Resonance Consistency Framework, Jayme Colosimo
Climate Messages In An Ai-Integrated Experiment: Interpretive Divergence, Policy Support, And A New Resonance Consistency Framework, Jayme Colosimo
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examined how environmental frames—particularly “Mother Earth” and “Mother Nature”—influence public support for climate policy and how these effects differ across demographic groups. Using a mixed-methods explanatory sequential design, the study executed a media survey experiment (N = 470) followed by semi-structured expert interviews to assess responses to two primes using a conventional corporate media message, and a message with similar content that was generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Quantitative findings showed that these metaphors generated uneven and sometimes divergent priming effects. Some groups—most notably White male Republicans—reported higher support for environmental policy under the conventional media prime. Under …
Open Chromatin-Guided Analysis Of Cell-Free Dna For Inferring Regulatory Landscapes In Cancer Detection, Monitoring, And Therapeutic Response, Sakuntha Devaka Gunarathna
Open Chromatin-Guided Analysis Of Cell-Free Dna For Inferring Regulatory Landscapes In Cancer Detection, Monitoring, And Therapeutic Response, Sakuntha Devaka Gunarathna
Theses and Dissertations
Conventional cancer diagnosis and monitoring rely on imaging and tissue biopsies. Imaging is constrained by resolution, while biopsies are invasive, limited in capturing tumor heterogeneity, and challenging to perform repeatedly over time. Liquid biopsy has emerged as a minimally invasive alternative that enables real-time assessment of tumor-derived material in circulation. Among its components, cell-free DNA (cfDNA) has gained significant attention as a promising biomarker for cancer detection and disease monitoring. However, most current cfDNA approaches rely on mutation- and methylation-based signals, which, while informative, can be limited by low tumor fraction, biological heterogeneity, and reduced sensitivity in early-stage disease. In …

Theses and Dissertations
The growing demand for critical minerals essential to clean energy technologies presents an opportunity to transform oilfield produced water (PW) – traditionally treated as waste – into a valuable resource. This dissertation investigates the recovery potential of lithium, salts, and other critical elements from produced water in the Bakken Formation, North Dakota, and evaluates the economic feasibility of integrating such recovery processes into existing petroleum operations. Comprehensive geochemical analyses were conducted on samples collected throughout the Bakken, revealing total dissolved solids (TDS) ranging from 46,815 to 327,714 ppm and lithium concentrations exceeding 200 ppm in several wells, indicating economically recoverable …
The Effects Of Geography, Forage Sources And Seasonality On Microbial Communities In Honey Bees, Adam Pachl
The Effects Of Geography, Forage Sources And Seasonality On Microbial Communities In Honey Bees, Adam Pachl
Theses and Dissertations
There has been growing research examining the effects on honey bee nutrition through their gut microbial communities. While there is some consensus about the core composition of the honey bee gut, there has been very little work to examine if regional or seasonal differences affect the microbiome. To examine if seasonal or regional differences have any impact on the composition of the gut microbiomes on North Dakota honey bees, worker bees were sampled from commercial honey bee colonies both pre and post honey flow in 2022 in six different regions of North Dakota. The gut bacteria from the bees were …

Mechanistic Insights Into Hla-Dependent Tumor Microenvironment Modulation And Tcr Vβ Activation Induced By Staphylococcal Enterotoxin I And Staphylococcal Enterotoxin G In Melanoma, Abiola Michael Sholarin
Theses and Dissertations
Immunotherapies have transformed cancer treatment by enabling durable antitumor responses through targeted activation of the immune system. Among the most potent immune-stimulatory molecules are bacterial superantigens, which activate large fractions of the T-cell repertoire through simultaneous binding of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II molecules and conserved regions of the T-cell receptor (TCR) β-chain. Because these interactions are strongly human MHC–restricted, HLA-transgenic mouse models are essential for evaluating the therapeutic potential and safety of superantigen-based immunotherapies. This dissertation investigates the antitumor activity and mechanisms of action of two superantigens encoded within the Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxin gene cluster—Staphylococcal enterotoxin I (SEI) and …

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth increases the long-term risk of diabetes and chronic kidney disease (CKD), yet its impact on diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is unclear. We previously showed that male preterm mice with diabetes develop early features of DKD, including reduced podocyte density, decreased renin expression, activation of angiogenesis pathways, and impaired endothelial-podocyte signaling. Here, we examine whether preterm birth similarly accelerates DKD progression in female mice and compare structural and transcriptomic outcomes in the females to the prior male cohort to assess sex-specific differences.
METHODS: Preterm mice were delivered by Caesarean section at 19 days post conception (dpc) and term …

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are mainstay therapies for diabetes and obesity, acting in part by enhancing glucose-dependent insulin secretion. While the primary cilium is a known signaling compartment for certain G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs), its role in the β-cell response to incretins remains undefined. Here, we show that primary cilia are essential for full GLP-1R signaling. Loss of β-cell cilia in mouse and human islets severely impaired GLP-1-potentiated insulin secretion, an effect preceded by blunted whole-cell cAMP and Ca
Girl Grammar: A Syntactic And Pragmatic Analysis Of Girl And Miss Girl, Evelyn A. Powers
Girl Grammar: A Syntactic And Pragmatic Analysis Of Girl And Miss Girl, Evelyn A. Powers
Senior Honors Papers / Undergraduate Theses
Based on observation, personal interaction, and informal interviews/linguistic judgements, this thesis presents the unique and asymmetrical grammaticality patterns of the terms Girl and Miss Girl. To account for these asymmetries, I provide a syntactic framework rooted in Minimalism and Rizzi’s (1997) expanded CP hypothesis, alongside a pragmatic explanation based on Barros and Frank’s (2023) attentional maintenance and attentional shift paradigm.
Miss Girl behaves as a typical R-expression when used as a 3rd person subject, but Girl has a very restricted distribution, inconsistent with either R-expressions or pronouns (it is acceptable as the subject of a main clause, ungrammatical in object …

BACKGROUND: The modified Blalock-Taussig-Thomas shunt (mBTTS) is a critical palliative procedure for infants with single-ventricle physiology, but thrombosis-related occlusion affects 8% to 12% of infants and carries nearly 50% mortality. Meanwhile, existing antithrombotic strategies fail to address the hemodynamic factors driving thrombosis, highlighting the need for a deeper understanding of flow dynamics in shunt failure.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to identify how mBTTS geometry influences hemodynamics and thrombosis risk, providing quantitative guidance for surgical planning and shunt design optimization.
METHODS: We used patient-specific imaging data to test 54 idealized mBTTS configurations, systematically varying key geometric factors: pulmonary artery diameter, shunt …

UNLABELLED: The NRF2 transcription factor is constitutively active in cancer, in which it functions to maintain oxidative homeostasis and reprogram cellular metabolism. NRF2-active tumors exhibit NRF2 dependency and resistance to chemotherapy/radiotherapy (RT). In this study, we characterize VVD-065, a first-in-class NRF2 inhibitor that acts via an unprecedented allosteric molecular glue mechanism. In the absence of stress or mutation, NRF2 is rapidly degraded by the Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (KEAP1)-cullin3 (CUL3) ubiquitin-ligase complex. VVD-065 specifically and covalently engages Cys151 on KEAP1, which in turn promotes KEAP1-CUL3 complex formation, leading to enhancement of NRF2 degradation. Previously reported Cys151-directed compounds decrease KEAP1-CUL3 interactions …
