The vaginal microbiome is often interpreted through static taxonomic patterns. Yet microbial composition alone does not explain why some communities resist perturbation, recover after disruption, or transition toward dysbiosis. This narrative review synthesizes evidence that vaginal microbiome stability is shaped by endocrine phase, epithelial substrate availability, microbial functional capacity, mucosal tone and candidate host modifiers. High-estrogen states, particularly pregnancy, are associated with epithelial maturation, glycogen accumulation, low vaginal pH, and Lactobacillus-dominant communities, whereas postpartum, lactational, menopausal, and other hypoestrogenic states are associated with reduced epithelial support and increased vulnerability to diverse anaerobe-rich configurations. We review the linking of the estrogen–glycogen–Lactobacillus …

An Anthropological Lens Into Human Milk Mirnas: Roles In Evolution And Epigenetic Programming Of Infant Health, Samantha Wu, Erika Yu, Allison Oh, Chantal Rabay, Amy L. Non
Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) represent an understudied bioactive component of human milk with an important epigenetic role in regulating infant gene expression. Most anthropological studies of human milk have focused on the evolutionary and biocultural significance of milk macronutrient content for infant development. This review will focus specifically on the value of studying milk miRNAs, a critical bioactive component of milk that may transmit cues to offspring about maternal environments. These cues could epigenetically program infant development and shape health trajectories throughout the life course. MiRNAs are short, single stranded, ribonucleic acids that serve as post-transcriptional regulators of gene expression which can …

KMT2A-rearranged (KMT2A-r) acute leukemias are especially prevalent in the pediatric population. KMT2A-fusion proteins drive leukemogenic gene expression through an interaction with a chromatin complex that includes the scaffold protein menin, giving rise to aggressive acute leukemias. RAS pathway mutations are also common in pediatric leukemia. In a cohort of 1750 patients enrolled on Children's Oncology Group (COG) trials, we identified RAS pathway mutations in 43% of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cases. The presence of RAS pathway mutations in KMT2A-r AML was associated with a lower complete remission rate, poor event-free survival and overall survival (OS), and early relapses. Given the …

Divalent cations, particularly calcium (Ca2+) and magnesium (Mg2+), are essential for maintaining chromosomal architecture, yet their roles in plants remain poorly characterized. This study investigated the effects of Ca2+ and Mg2+ on the chromosomal structure of wheat (Triticum aestivum, 2n = 6x = 42), a widely used model in plant cytogenetics. Root-tip chromosomes were isolated enzymatically and treated with BAPTA (a Ca2+-specific chelator), EDTA (a broad cation chelator), and buffer solutions containing either 5 mM Mg2+ (XBE5) or no Mg2+ (XBE). Chromosomes were stained with aceto-orcein for light microscopy and processed for scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Microscopic observations revealed that …

Turkish Journal of Botany
The EYE2 protein is essential for eyespot assembly and localization in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying its function remain poorly understood. In this study, we present a systematic evaluation and optimization of an immunoprecipitation (IP)-based workflow for isolating EYE2 and its associated protein complexes. Key methodological variables including strain selection, flagella removal, and detergent concentration were compared using western blotting to determine optimal extraction conditions. The combination of the cell wall-deficient cw15 strain, 4% digitonin extraction, and pH shock-mediated deflagellation significantly enhanced IP specificity and reproducibility. Using this optimized protocol, EYE2 and its potential interaction partners were isolated …

Groundwater-obligate taxa (stygobionts) exhibit variable degrees of habitat specialization, ranging from those restricted to single micro-habitats to generalists occurring in a broad range of habitat types. The karstic Edwards Aquifer is the most biodiverse and well-studied groundwater habitat in the continental United States, but some Edwards Aquifer-associated species also occupy the hyporheic zone of rivers downstream from karst. The goals of this research were to 1) assess the potential of the off-karst hyporheic zone as habitat for ‘karst’ species and 2) to determine how stygobiont richness, diversity, and abundance related to distance from karst in the hyporheic zone of a …

Distributed Impressions: How Multiple Minds Come Together To Shape Person Perception, Lindsey J. Tepfer
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Moments after perceiving another person, we immediately infer a wealth of information about them. Despite the complexities within our social environments, we distill an incredible magnitude of details available to us into compressed representations of other people’s minds and mannerisms. Yet research has focused largely on mapping isolated stimuli—divorced from its messy context—to the spontaneous impressions they provoke. As a result, there are many unanswered questions about how our judgments are influenced by the rich and noisy social world we inhabit. Here, I’ve leveraged two paradigms to investigate how impression formation and updating may operate when the constraints of the …

Sperm cryopreservation is a basic element of assisted reproductive technology, yet it often compromises cell viability through thermal and osmotic stress. The cellular response involves HSP90, a stress marker and ZPII, which is essential for sperm-oocyte interaction and preventing polyspermy. In addition, this modified cryoprotectant combines glycerol and raffinose is expected to reduce damage and increase spermatozoa's recovery rate after cryopreservation. To address these challenges, we investigated the expression levels of HSP90 and ZPII to assess the protective capacity of modified cryoprotectant formulations. These parameters were analyzed pre- and post-cryopreservation to establish whether these novel mediums superiorly preserve sperm integrity …

What Are Vestigial Structures? Evidence For Evolution Explained, Ryan Bebej
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
Evolution wasn’t something we talked about very much in my home or church when I was growing up.
Yet somehow, I came to believe that evolution wasn’t compatible with Christian faith. At the time that seemed okay, because I had heard that the evidence for evolution wasn’t very strong anyway.
That all began to change when I started studying biology in college. In different classes, I encountered some of the compelling evidence for evolution and common descent.
Vestigial structures were one of the topics that came up often in biology textbooks about these topics.
Today, biologists point to …

Hold-Then-Release Safety-Gated Streaming With Dual-Lane Classification And Abuse-Sample Harvesting For Anonymous Public Llm Surfaces, Gustavo Matthew Assuncao
Defensive Publications Series
This defensive publication discloses a runtime architecture for anonymous, unauthenticated public large-language-model (LLM) surfaces — the "ask a question" box on a marketing website, a public demo endpoint, an embedded help widget — that simultaneously preserves token-by-token streaming user experience and enforces an absolute zero-leak output-safety guarantee. The core mechanism is hold-then-release: the final model answer is streamed from the inference backend into an in-process delta buffer and is never forwarded to the client during generation; output safety executes against the fully assembled answer text; only a clean (or explicitly flagged-but-tolerated) verdict causes the buffered deltas to be replayed to …

An Analysis Of The Law On The Prohibition Of Fraud In Goods, Samira Krourou
Revue Marocaine de Droit, d'Economie et de Gestion (Moroccan Journal of Law, Economics and Management)
One of the most important aspects of consumer protection is the fight against fraud in goods—a form of protection enshrined in the Abrahamic religions long before the enactment of positive laws or the emergence of consumer advocacy movements that spread from the United States to Europe and the rest of the world. While fraud in general is indicative of a malicious tendency to infringe upon rights, spread corruption, and undermine interests, fraud involving goods and food is an even more heinous and dangerous crime because it affects the health and lives of both humans and animals. Vestirse Con Un Cuadro”: El Mantón De Manila En La Encrucijada Entre Tradición Y Modernidad En Fortunata Y Jacinta De Benito Pérez Galdós, Ines Corujo Martin
Publications and Research

Effect Of Extraction Methods On Emulsifying Properties Of Corn Fiber Gum, Wu Chenglong, Ren Ying, Li Xingguo, Tang Leiming, Sun Xiaohong
Food and Machinery
[Objective] To investigate the influence of three extraction methods (alkaline, enzymatic, and acidic) on the emulsification characteristics of corn fiber gum (CFG). [Methods] Corn bran was used as the raw material, and CFG was extracted using sodium hydroxide, xylanase, and formic–acetic acid–water solutions. The changes in particle size, zeta potential, rheological properties, creaming index, appearance, and microstructure of CFG emulsions were measured. [Results] All three CFG emulsions exhibited shear-thinning behavior, with viscosities decreasing as the shear rate increased. The enzymatically extracted CFG emulsion had the highest viscosity, best gel properties, smallest particle size [(751.6 ± 22.5) nm], highest absolute zeta …

Strategy For Linear Range Broadening Of Elisa Based On Antibody Synergistic Combination, Guo Cuili, Peng Juan, Lai Weihua, Xing Keyu, Gan Bei
Food and Machinery
[Objective] To broaden the linear range of ELISA for deoxynivalenol detection. [Methods] This paper obtains three antibodies with different sensitivities via mouse immunization, cell fusion and screening, ascites preparation, and antibody purification. By optimizing the working concentration and composition ratio of the antibody synergistic combination, the optimal antibody synergistic combination ratio is applied to ELISA to determine the linear range. [Results] The optimal reaction conditions for the ic-ELISA based on synergistic antibodies are as follows: the optimal working concentrations of the coating antigen and antibody are 0.3 and 0.1 μg/mL, respectively. The linear range of the synergistic antibody is obviously …

Ameliorative Effects And Mechanisms Of Crocetin On Insulin Resistance In High-Fat Diet-Induced Diabetic Mice, Wen Jing, Qin Si, Lyu Chenghao
Food and Machinery
[Objective] To investigate the hypoglycemic, lipid-lowering, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects of crocetin in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced diabetic mice, and to preliminarily explore its regulatory effects on hepatic insulin signaling pathways and protein S-nitrosylation levels. [Methods] An insulin resistance model was established in C57BL/6J mice by HFD feeding. Mice were administered low (5 mg/kg), medium (10 mg/kg), or high (20 mg/kg) doses of crocetin for 8 weeks, with metformin (200 mg/kg) used as a positive control. Fasting blood glucose, oral glucose tolerance, serum insulin, lipid profiles, hepatic oxidative stress, and inflammatory cytokines were measured. Western blot was used to detect phosphorylation …

Study On Structural Characteristics And Immunomodulatory Activity Of Flammulina Velutipes Crude Polysaccharide, Wang Xinnuo, Peng Chujun, Jin Yumeng, Zhang Molan, You Lijun
Food and Machinery
[Objective] To prepare Flammulina velutipes crude polysaccharide (FVP) and evaluate its structural characteristics and immunomodulatory activity. [Methods] FVP was prepared from Flammulina velutipes using hot-water extraction and ethanol precipitation, and its structural characteristics were characterized by combining Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and high-performance size-exclusion chromatography–multi-angle laser light scattering–refractive index detection (HPSEC–MALLS–RI). The immunomodulatory activity of FVP was evaluated using RAW 264.7 macrophages and a cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppressed mouse model. [Results] The total sugar content of FVP is (51.39 ± 1.36) g/100 g. Structural characterization results show that FVP has characteristic features of a β-type pyranose ring and exhibits a multi-component …
