Are children who consume sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) at increased risk for dental caries compared with children who don’t consume high SSBs during childhood? It has been previously established that children who consume (SSBs) are at an increased risk for dental caries. Nonetheless, we raise the question again to consider the current literature and statistical analyses of current trends. Are American children consuming fewer SSBs and subsequently developing fewer dental caries since before 2000? We are investigating this question to discover if the relationship between SSB consumption and the development of dental caries in children is a continued problem among children …

During the Covid-19 pandemic small businesses found themselves gasping for air as their employees felt the disaster. In an attempt to aid these choking businesses, the United States Small Business Administration alongside the Department of Treasury implemented the Paycheck Protection Program. Its aim targeted keeping employees paid and businesses open. The plot twist here is about who fits into that category of small businesses. Religious entities were included in this aid and suddenly, not only was the economic wall hit, so was the wall between religion and government. The US federal government, through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), funded approximately …

Exploring The Functional Role Of Neprilysin In Pi3k/Akt1 Signaling In Triple-Negative Breast Cancer, Ariadna Daniela Menjivar Dec 2025

Exploring The Functional Role Of Neprilysin In Pi3k/Akt1 Signaling In Triple-Negative Breast Cancer, Ariadna Daniela Menjivar

Student Scholar Symposium

Our lab is investigating the protein Neprilysin (NEP) and its role in Triple-Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC). Previous bioinformatics data from Dr. Conway’s research indicated that in TNBC cells high in Neprilysin expression (HCC38), the PI3K pathway was the most active signaling pathway. This information suggests that Neprilysin is positively upregulating the PI3K pathway in this cell line. This is interesting given the fact that in the context of TNBC, Neprilysin has been shown to negatively regulate the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. The PI3K/AKT pathway is the most commonly mutated pathway in breast cancer. AKT is the central mediator protein in this …

Neurofeedback: An Emerging Contender In The Treatment Of Mental And Behavioral Disorders, Makayla Fisher

Student Scholar Symposium

Neurofeedback, an emerging treatment for mental and behavioral disorders, has shown promising results as a holistic alternative to traditional therapy and medication. This treatment was discovered in the 1950s by using an electroencephalography (EEG) device to train people to achieve an alpha state using the reward of a bell sound. Currently, the basis of neurofeedback is using an EEG device that is connected to a video, such as television, to receive positive or negative feedback, corresponding to beneficial or non-beneficial brain activity. After 3-4 weeks of the video dimming in response to non- beneficial brain activity, your brain starts to …

Quantum Rings Simulations Of Cisplatin, Clinton Hutchins, Laci Walmer Dec 2025

Quantum Rings Simulations Of Cisplatin, Clinton Hutchins, Laci Walmer

Student Scholar Symposium

Cisplatin is a major chemotherapy drug that relies on a platinum-based core to deliver the properties necessary to combat cancer. This platinum-based core creates an undesired toxicity that poses challenges during treatment. The aim of this research is to employ quantum simulations to explore the stability of biochemicals such as cisplatin and predict their binding affinities for targets of interest. Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) simulations are used to explore if the substitution of a core like Au or Pd are possible to retain anticancer efficacy but reduce its toxicity. With the use of these quantum simulations, we can run different …

Abstract

In both religious and educational spheres, the relationship between faith and science is an ongoing issue frequently marked by a perceived conflict between the two. This study investigates how theological mindsets potentially contribute to these perceptions by surveying ministers from various protestant Christian denominations in the Southeastern United States. Our research specifically explores interpretations of Genesis 1-11, views on human origins, and attitudes toward the compatibility between faith and science. Utilizing Ian Barbour’s framework for categorizing faith and science perspectives, the study examines the theological, cultural, and denominational factors potentially shaping the theological outlooks of pastors/ministers. We report clear …

Exploration Of Euclidean Distances In Five-Dimensional Color Space As Proof-Of-Concept For Identification Of Promising Alternatives To Platinum-Based Cancer Drug Candidates, Kiomi Tanakura, Elena G. Harvey

Student Scholar Symposium

Cisplatin, cis-Pt(NH3)2Cl2, is one of the most successful anticancer drugs of all time. However, it has some negative aspects, including toxicity to healthy cells, side effects, and cost. Our goal in this project is to design metal-based anticancer drugs that would be less expensive, less toxic, and more efficient for cancer patients than cisplatin. To begin this research we calculated Euclidean distances - as used by computerized recognition systems - to compare the properties of colors within seasonal palettes that are proven and visible to the eye. These Euclidean distances were then used …

Rethinking Music Theory Pedagogy, Kathryn Williamsen Dec 2025

Rethinking Music Theory Pedagogy, Kathryn Williamsen

Student Scholar Symposium

As music has evolved over time the education system has also been evolving. Unfortunately, this growth in music education has become stagnant in the last century and pedagogy has remained relatively steady. While there are important pedagogical techniques and approaches used in the classical history of music, there are also new approaches that should be given more heed. The music theory that is being taught in the classroom feels detached from the music students are producing and consuming.

As this problem has persisted two improvements can be made to music theory pedagogy. The first would be changing our approach to …

Human Defensin 5 (HD5) is an antimicrobial peptide present in the small intestine that plays a role in gut homeostasis. We have been investigating the role of HD5 in colon cells, but research shows that HD5 levels in the small and large intestine vary significantly in Crohn's. Previous data from our lab suggests that HD5 leads to a decrease in wound healing and an increase in apoptosis in colon cells, we want to see if the same is true in the small intestine. So, we are investigating the effect of HD5 on expression of β-catenin, a key protein in the …
