Steam Distillation And Characterization Of Star Anise: Investigating Aroma And Aromaticity, Natalie Brattain
Steam Distillation And Characterization Of Star Anise: Investigating Aroma And Aromaticity, Natalie Brattain
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
"Steam distillation is a widely used technique for extracting essential oils from plant materials, allowing for the separation of volatile compounds while minimizing thermal degradation. In this study, steam distillation was used to extract the essential oil of Illicium verum (Star Anise) to investigate the relationship between aroma and aromaticity. While ""aroma"" refers to the sensory perception of a substance’s scent, ""aromaticity"" is a chemical property related to the stability of conjugated ring systems. This distinction for our compound was explored by using chemical characterization of the extracted oil. Following the steam distillation process, gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectrometry …

Neither Confirm Nor Deny—The U.S. Navy’S Declaratory Policy On Nuclear Weapons, Jeffrey A. Larsen, James J. Wirtz
Naval War College Review
The reintroduction of the submarine-launched nuclear cruise missile into the U.S. Navy’s arsenal signals a shift in U.S. nuclear policy, challenging long-standing declaratory norms and public statements such as the “neither confirm nor deny” stance on the presence of nuclear weapons on warships.

Sg Radar In The Solomon Islands Campaign—Assumptions, Perceptions, Reality, Leonard R. Heinz
Naval War College Review
Radar made its appearance in Pacific night combat in August 1942, but initial attempts to use the new technology in surface actions proved disappointing, leading to the development of a standardized combat information center organization on warships to gather, synthesize, analyze, and report information to commanders in real time.

Mission And Weapon Drive Fleet Design, Jeff Vandenengel
Mission And Weapon Drive Fleet Design, Jeff Vandenengel
Naval War College Review
Today, the U.S. Navy’s primary mission is changing from power projection to sea control, and as a result its primary weapon is changing from the aerial bomb to the missile. Those shifts in mission and weapon will inevitably drive the Navy to a new fleet design, one different from the carrier-centric model that has dominated since World War II.
