In this work, we investigate heat cleaning options for high-polarization GaAs/GaAsP strained-superlattice (SSL) photocathodes with a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) that were grown using metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). This was done using a microMott polarimeter at Jefferson Lab to optimize both quantum efficiency and polarization. The fabrication process for MOCVD-grown photocathodes does not allow for the inclusion of an arsenic cap, contrary to what is done when fabricating photocathodes using molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE). Without proper preparation, the performance of MOCVD-grown photocathodes can be limited due to surface contamination. Here, we varied both duration and temperature of the heat cleaning …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Abstract
A COMPARISON OF ENDODONTIC ROOT-END FILLING TECHNIQUES: A MICRO-COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY ANALYSIS
Andrew Marra, D.D.S.
Introduction: Researchers have compared many endodontic root-end filling techniques for porosity, though few have used a micro-computed tomography analysis for comparisons. The purpose of this study was to evaluate total porosity volume of three different bio-ceramics filling materials with two techniques--hand compaction versus hand/ultrasonic compaction at an ultrasonic setting of 5% using Micro-CT Analysis.
Methods: Seventy-two human single canaled extracted teeth were selected for the study. All were subjected to orthograde endodontic treatment followed by root tip resection at 3-mm from the apex …
“We Do Everything Together!”: Examining The Effect Of A Multitasking Chore On Narrative Engagement And Parasocial Relationships With Podcast Hosts, Hailey Morgan Scherer
“We Do Everything Together!”: Examining The Effect Of A Multitasking Chore On Narrative Engagement And Parasocial Relationships With Podcast Hosts, Hailey Morgan Scherer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation examined the link between media multitasking behaviors and the subsequent enhancement of narrative engagement and parasocial relationships with podcast hosts. Research on parasocial relationships has long established that people can develop strong pseudo relationships through aural media, such as radio and podcasts (e.g., Horton & Wohl, 1956). This has often been attributed to the charismatic nature of hosts on audio programs (e.g., Schlütz and Hedder, 2022; Perks & Turner, 2019; Heiselberg & Have 2023), however, the ability of people to listen while they engage in other tasks (e.g., driving or doing chores) can also enhance parasocial bonds. One …
Engineering Extracellular Vesicles (Evs) To Combat Infection And Inflammation In Cystic Fibrosis, Sharanya Sarkar
Engineering Extracellular Vesicles (Evs) To Combat Infection And Inflammation In Cystic Fibrosis, Sharanya Sarkar
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a multisystemic genetic disorder caused by mutations in the CFTR gene, resulting in chronic pulmonary infections, hyperinflammation, and progressive lung damage. Among the pathogens that colonize CF lungs, Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) is predominant, infecting over 50% of adults with CF and developing antibiotic resistance over time. Current modulator therapies fail to address persistent bacterial infections, chronic inflammation, or irreversible lung damage, underscoring the need for novel therapeutic strategies. In our previous in vitro studies, we demonstrated that extracellular vesicles (EVs) secreted by primary Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells (HBECs) inhibit P. aeruginosa growth by reducing the …
Development Of An Enantioselective Synthesis Of (–)-Euonyminol And Studies Towards The Total Synthesis Of (–)-Lomaiviticin A, Zhi Xu
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
In the first chapter, I describe the development of the first enantioselective synthesis of (–)-euonyminol (1), a heavily oxidized sesquiterpenoid. Structurally, (–)-euonyminol (1) features a tricyclic framework containing an all-carbon quaternary center and nine free hydroxyl groups. Following the initial failed attempts to achieve a semi-pinacol rearrangement of an allylic silyl ether, we developed a novel oxyalkylation reaction to establish the C10 quaternary center of 1. From this intermediate, we investigated three distinct strategies to construct the tricyclic framework of 1 employing a reductive cyclization, an aldol–dehydration sequence, and a radical cyclization reaction, respectively. Finally, a series of stereoselective transformations …

'Typical Cases': Representation, Racializing Medicine, And The Politics Of The Case Study In The Moulages Collections Of The Hôpital Saint-Louis, Kathleen Pierce
Art: Faculty Publications
Physicians at the hôpital Saint-Louis prized their collection of wax models (moulages) for their precise representation of color: a central project of dermatology. Close looking at the collection, however, reveals the repeated use of a consistent light skin tone across the vast majority of models. Given physicians’ investment in chromatic precision, how might we understand this generic attention to skin coloration? “Typical Cases” asks how, when, and why skin pigmentation mattered to fin-de-siècle dermatologists. I first argue that the overrepresentation of light skin tones comprises an aesthetic choice made by the model-makers and their physician-patrons. I subsequently ask how this …

This paper studies graded manifolds with local coordinates concentrated in non-negative degrees. We provide a canonical description of these objects in terms of classical geometric data and, building on this geometric viewpoint, we prove the Frobenius theorem for distributions in this graded setting.
Women’S Work In Film Production And The Documents Of Film History, Erin Mcguirl
Women’S Work In Film Production And The Documents Of Film History, Erin Mcguirl
Library Staff Publications
This article surfaces evidence of women’s work in film production through critical bibliographical analysis, arguing that existing textual records are robust sources for feminist film histories. Case studies covering nearly a half-century of American film history show critical bibliography in action. Treated as artifacts, documents not only exhibit women’s roles in their creation but also speak to their afterlives in the marketplace and in research libraries. Looking forward, critical bibliography can make visible below-the-line women’s labor in existing collections and inform work to curate and use new ones in the future.

This study provides a comprehensive analysis of ear canal geometry from 0.7 to 91 years, based on high-resolution computed tomography scans of 221 ears. Quantified features include cross-sectional areas along the canal’s length, total canal length, curvature, and key anatomical landmarks such as the first and second bends and the cartilage-to-bone transition. Significant developmental changes occur during the first 10 years of life, with adult-like characteristics emerging between ages 10 and 15 years, likely coinciding with puberty. Substantial interindividual variability is observed across all ages, particularly in the canal area. The canal becomes fully cartilaginous at and lateral to the …

Beyond The Glass Ceiling: Career Advancement Strategies For Mid-Level Women In Student Affairs, Jalonda N. Thompson
Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs
The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the literature on the push and pull factors that influence women’s choices to either opt in or opt out of career advancement in student affairs (Coetzee & Moosa, 2020; Harman & Sealy, 2017). Women, specifically Black women, are underrepresented in Senior Student Affairs Officer (SSAO) positions in higher education (American Council of Education, 2024). As the demographics of the United States (US) change, student affairs is at a critical point to foster an inclusive learning environment that reflects the increasing racial and ethnic diversity in the US (Lopez, 2006). …

40 Years Passing By In (A) “Heartbeat”, Christopher Janney
Monsoon: South Asian Studies Association Journal
This article outlines the forty-year history go Christopher Janney’s iconic performance work “HeartBeat.” Trained as an architect and jazz musician, Janney combines these two disciplines to create large interactive light/sound installations and performances. On the one hand, he attempts to make architecture more like music, more “alive” using real-time sensing devices as on his “Harmonic Convergence” installation on the Miami International Airport. On the other hand, he attempts to make music more like architecture, more physical more visual. In his “HeartBeat” performance, a dancer wears a heartbeat device that amplifies his/her heartbeat in “real time.” Over this pulse, live musicians …

Yoga Sūtra Book Four And The Yogabindu, Christopher Key Chapple
Monsoon: South Asian Studies Association Journal
Four themes from the fourth pāda of Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtra are examined here: karma (IV:2-13), individuality (IV:16), humility (IV:20-22), and freedom (IV:29-34). Affirmations and variant interpretations of these four are provided from Haribhadra Virahāṅka’s Yogabindu, most likely composed a century or two later.

Collective Karma: From The Yogasūtra To Taylor Swift, Zoë Slatoff
Monsoon: South Asian Studies Association Journal
The Indian knowledge traditions speak at length about karma, which is divided into three categories—accumulated (saṃcita), ripe (prārabdha), and future (kriyamāṇa). While much is said about our individual karma and how it affects our repeated reincarnation in cyclic existence, how does this affect others and how do others affect us? In other words, as this paper explores, what is our reciprocal and collective karma?

Painting Liberation: A Visual Ontology Of The Interplay Of Mind And Consciousness In Book Four Of The Yoga Sūtras, Melissa Townsend
Monsoon: South Asian Studies Association Journal
This presentation explores how artistic practice can illuminate philosophical questions about the nature of mind, consciousness, and liberation as articulated in Book Four of the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali. Through a series of paintings that visually translate these sūtras, I propose that art offers a unique, experiential means of engaging with the complex relationship between citta (mind) and puruṣa (consciousness).
The paintings function as a form of “visual ontology,” inviting viewers to engage with abstract philosophical concepts in a sensory, tangible way. By depicting the interplay between the mutable processes of the mind and the unchanging awareness of consciousness, these …

Supply chain disruptions regularly interrupt the normal operations of organizations, impairing their financial, operational, and service performance. Therefore, organizations must develop capabilities to enhance their resilience–their ability to anticipate, overcome, and transform after disruptions. The literature proposes that agility, adaptability, and alignment (AAA capabilities) enhance long-term organizational success but does not explicitly link these AAA capabilities to resilience. Motivated by conversations with senior supply chain leaders, our research explores how organizations utilize practices, behaviors, and structures to build AAA capabilities in their pursuit of resilience over different phases of disruption. We use a grounded theory approach, conducting in-depth, semi-structured interviews …

Engaging African American Families: Suggestions To Improve Treatment Utilization For Opioid Use Disorders, Martina S. Moore, Tanya J. Middleton
2025 Faculty Bibliography
Substance use disorders have been considered a “family disease,” and the impact of opioid use in African American communities is evident. African American overdose-related deaths now exceed that of White Americans in the United States. Despite the need, they engage in treatment at lower rates than White Americans. Research has called for more culturally responsive approaches to improve treatment outcomes. However, efforts to consider family and the community are not robust. This article reviews the impact of opioid use in the African American community while offering suggestions for counselors and therapists working with families to improve engagement.

Premise: Hydrological regime influences wetland plant species distribution andperformance. Global warming and extreme weather events are magnifying floodingpatterns, and understanding how invasive taxa respond across life stages (establish-ment vs. established phase) is important for predicting and managing their coloni-zation and spread. Our objective was to measure flood trait responses at contrastinglife stages in closely related congeners (Ludwigia peploides, diploid; L. hexapetala, decaploid; Onagraceae) differing in their invasiveness in the field.
Methods: In the field, we assessed phenological responses to seasonal hydrological changes, and in mesocosms, we assessed flood stress responses of establishing shoot fragments underdeep‐flooded, shallow‐flooded, and gradual drawdown hydrological …

In the runner locating variation of cops and robbers on a graph, a chaser attempts to locate an invisible runner by probing a single vertex v each turn, from which the chaser learns the runner’s distance. The runner is then permitted to stay at his current vertex or move to an adjacent vertex other than v. A graph is locatable if the chaser is able to locate the runner in a finite number of turns, and the location number of a graph is the minimum number of turns necessary to determine the runner’s location regardless of the runner’s evasion strategy. …

Sexual selection due to mate preference for certain traits can maintain phenotypic diversity within populations and species. In taxa with discrete phenotypes, such as color polymorphic species, assortative mating may lead to disruptive selection and sympatric divergence, yet how such interactions vary over species' ranges remains poorly understood. To address this shortcoming, we examined spatial patterns of sexual size dimorphism and presumptive male–female mating pairs based on body size and coloration in the color polymorphic Eastern Red-backed Salamander, Plethodon cinereus. This species exhibits two common color morphs, striped and unstriped, that also differ in other elements of their biology, including …
