Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is a potentially malignant disorder characterized by chronic inflammation and excessive collagen deposition, leading to fibrosis in the oral mucosa. This study aimed to explore the contribution of the miR-1291/LEFTY2 axis in the development of OSF progression. Materials and methods Expression of miR-1291 was evaluated in OSF tissues and primary myofibroblasts using RNA sequencing and qRT-PCR. The functional role of miR-1291 and LEFTY2 were investigated using miR-1291 inhibitor and lentiviral-mediated overexpression of LEFTY2, respectively. A luciferase reporter assay was conducted to examine the direct interaction between miR-1291 and LEFTY2. Myofibroblast activities were assessed by …

Evaluating The Diagnostic Value And Prospects Of Genomic And Mutational Sequencing In Malignant Transformation Of Oral Leukoplakia, Wei Liu, Jian Yuan, Yuhan Zhu, Zirui Wang, Zhongjing Lv

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Genomic and mutational sequencing in malignant transformation of oral leukoplakia (OLK) has emergingly gained momentum. In this short communication, we identified 5 retrospective follow-up studies and 5 cross-section comparative studies on this issue using formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues. Copy number alteration (CNA) was demonstrated to increase with the grade of oral dysplasia. CNA-based algorithms showed better prediction performances than histological grade in assessing the risk of OLK malignant transformation. Importantly, we conducted a pooled-analysis on the mutation frequencies of the common oral cancer driver genes extracted from individual studies. The most common mutation gene was found to be TP53 (26.26 …

Innovative 3d-Printed Dental Teaching Model For Root Canal Treatment Simulation, Szu-Yu Chen, Yu-Chiao Wu, Jia-Rong Wu, Che-Yi Lin, Yi-Jen Hung, Tsai-Wang Huang, Yi-Shing Shieh

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose Effective endodontic education requires realistic models for simulating clinical procedures, particularly working length (WL) determination using electronic apex locators (EALs). Traditional training methods using extracted or plastic teeth lack standardization, realism, and compatibility with EALs. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a 3D-printed tooth model with conductive properties that allows realistic and standardized training in EAL-based WL determination. Materials and methods Custom 3D-printed teeth with two distinct working lengths (20.0 mm and 21.9 mm) were designed using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and 3D scanning. Each tooth was embedded in two types of conductive media—tap water and saline. …

Effects Of Varying Anteroposterior Craniodentofacial Morphologies On Three-Dimensional Smile Variables, Hsin-Chung Cheng, Patcharamas Banditsaowapak

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose Research regarding clinical facial assessment has increasingly shifted toward three-dimensional (3D) methods. This cross-sectional study examined the associations between 3D smile variables and two anteroposterior craniodentofacial morphologies (overjet [OJ] and point-A-nasion-point-B angle [ANB]) and quantified facial soft tissue displacement during the transition from rest to posed smiles. Materials and methods This study included 119 participants aged 18–30 years. They were divided into three OJ groups (0–4 mm, >4 mm, and <0 mm) and three ANB groups (0°–4°, >4°, and <0°). 3D facial images were taken at rest and during smiling. Subsequently, landmark positions were analyzed. Linear, angular, and proportional measurements were obtained, and landmark displacements were measured. Results Of the 257 3D soft tissue variables considered, 41 differed significantly among the 3 OJ groups, and 46 differed significantly among the 3 ANB groups during smiling. The intercommissural width measured during smiling in ANB group 1 was more significant than that in the other two groups. Labiomental angles were larger in ANB group 3 at rest and during smiling, whereas the angle at rest was smaller in OJ group 2. Lower lip movements in OJ group 3 and ANB group 3 were more restricted than those in groups 1 and 2. Conclusion OJ and ANB primarily affect soft tissue landmarks during smiling. A large OJ may lead to a deep labiomental sulcus, whereas a negative ANB may result in a flattened sulcus. Reverse OJ and Class III skeletal malocclusion affect the lower lip by restricting its movement.

Mir-376a/Neuropilin-1 Axis Mediates The Cancer Stemness In Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma-An In Vitro Study, Yu-Chao Chang, Yi-Wen Liao, Cheng-Chia Yu, Heng-Yi Liao

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose The incidence of oral cancer has been steadily increased over the years. Recent researches indicated that exploring oral cancer stem cells (CSCs) characterized by self-renewal, pluripotency, and aggressiveness have emerged as a promising strategy for predicting oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) recurrence and metastasis. Previous studies have demonstrated that microRNAs regulate cancer stemness. However, the mechanisms that miR-376a/neuropilin-1 (NRP1) axis influences CSC traits have not yet been fully understood. Therefore, an in-depth investigation was conducted in this study. Materials and methods miR-376a expression in CSCs derived from OSCC cell line SAS was quantified by quantitative real-time polymerase chain …

The Potential Effect Of Photobiomodulation On Oral Mucositis Induced By Head And Neck Radio-Chemotherapy: A Literature Review, Rashin Bahrami, Shahriar Eftekharian, Raha Jafarieh, Maryam Pourhajibagher, Abbas Bahador

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Oral mucositis (OM) is a common side effect of head and neck radio-chemotherapy. It manifests as painful, ulcerative lesions in the oral mucosa, significantly impairing essential functions such as eating, speaking, and maintaining oral hygiene. It finally has adverse effects on the patient's quality of life. Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) has emerged as a promising non-invasive modality for preventing and treating OM. Due to controversy among the results of studies, this literature review synthesizes findings from recent randomized controlled trials that evaluated the use of PBMT in adult and pediatric cancer patients. This review also highlights the mechanisms, clinical efficacy, …

Unveiling The Characteristics And Surface Modification Of Titanium, Zirconia, And Polyetheretherketone Dental Implants, Shinn-Jyh Ding, Yu-Hsuan Cheng, Chun-Cheng Chen

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Titanium, zirconia, and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) are among the most extensively studied materials in dental implantology, each offering unique properties that influence their clinical performance. This review systematically compared their physicochemical characteristics and their in vitro and in vivo behaviors. It also evaluated various surface modification techniques designed to enhance osseointegration and antibacterial properties. Titanium, recognized as the gold standard, is renowned for its exceptional mechanical strength and superior osseointegration, although it is associated with a higher risk of peri-implantitis. Zirconia, valued for its excellent aesthetics and compatibility with soft tissues, presents a promising metal-free alternative; however, its brittleness can …
